I think this song (and The Else in general) is so underrated. This track, Mesopotamians, and Bee of the Bird of the Moth are amongst some of my favorite tracks of theirs.
I actually like this track because it sits higher in John's voice than most of their music, and it's nice to hear that vocal quality.
I love They Might Be Giants, But call me crazy, but I wasn't to thrilled about what the "Dust Brothers" did with them on "The Else". I actually thought "The Spine" was much better. But that's just my opinion. This is still a great song!

i don't do enough drugs to like TMBG, i used to love them when i was 14 and my licensce plate was TMBG888 but have since realized they are too full of themselves to be entertaining
Where are all the really good quality copies of this video?! I watched it a few months ago, and now this seems to be the best one I can find! Sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, and with these guys, you really need that to get the full TMBG effect!
to say that they dont want to be famous is misinturepting them i dont beleive that that has ever been said as far as i know and they do want to make a name for themselves but they just want it to be on their terms, and please learn how to spell "Linnell" 2 n's 3 L's thank you
john linnels voice sounded different in that performance. Either way it was great! I still dont understand why they dont get much publicity. Their music way better then 90% of the artists they show on mtv.
They don't want the publicity. They don't want to go mainstream and go through all the pitfalls that come with it. It's probably better not to have some chump lie and say that he or she was a fan forever but listened to them only 2 days prior. That was the fate of Green Day.
Actually it's pretty much impossible for a group to be able to control their popularity, other then go out and perform. They can't force their style to be everyone's taste. It is a talent very few actually have perfected, and the most recent artist to truly have it is Eminem. I think what happened with TMBG is the timing of their releases. However, their fans have been sufficient for them to survive over 20 years, so you can't say they have no talent for appeal. I love them to death!
Since when did I say they have no talent or appeal? People try to stay slightly below the radar for years to not gain TOO MUCH popularity. I watch Broadway performances and I asked a guy who was in this play: "Man you were great! Why don't you go into the movie bis?" and he said: "Because fame does things to you". Then again other celebs want the fame. So I guess you would really have to ask John and John. They're my second favorite band right now.
Look I am not trying to insult you, and I am not saying that there are some performers/artists who do not want celeb status, but most of the time that is just a common excuse for not being able to break into films, or getting a record contract. Next I was not quoting you in particular about the "talent", and "appeal" comment. I meant that no one, not even people who dislike them could say they have no " " or " " since they have survived for 20+ years.
Understandable. Sorry if I sounded gruff, that was not intended. I'm sure they are able to be huge but I was saying do we WANT them to be huge? Too much popularity can lead to the band selling out, though it is mostly the record company's fault that that happens. Maybe that's one of the reasons why bands like Nine Inch Nails want out of record companies. Anyway, I agree with you.
What does he say in the first part of the sentence starting at 1:58 ?
