First of all if you actually look at the video you see that his head tilts slightly upwards so that he looks directly at the wraith plasma projectile coming at him, thereby noticing it and activating the bubble shield he has in his inventory, pulling out the Magnum in the process.

This tells us that he was aware of the incoming projectile when the pulled out his Magnum and Bubble Shield! And the reason for him pulling out the magnum? Well we can only speculate...
