The course book is there to help aid you, with pronunciation, etc. You can read along with the book and pronounce things as you go along. It's a great way to learn. Listen and Read. You're getting a visual, hands on experience, as well as a listening experience. All the keys to learning.
I tried to learn japanese with living languge when i was 13, It grammarly for me, too many phrases, maybe i didn't know how to use it.
