Its probably for looks like most of DPRK's buildings. Even if it is completed in 2012, its a total waste of money that could be spent on the starving people over there... @formeandyou83 They started building this hotel in 1987 but ran out of money with the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2008 they started working on it again. So if you documentary was before 2008 it was correct. They say it will be complete in late 2012.

This building (if my intel is correct) was supposed to be a hotel that would house the westerners when they visited North Korea. It was supposed to have a restaurant at the top that rotated since it was believed that westerners enjoyed their food when they where rotating. Actually the government did not use the country's resources. It is an Egyptian company called Orascom Group that has mostly invested in this construction. Orascom has also entered into a US$ 400 million deal with the North Korean government to build and run a 3G mobile phone network.
NO Actually the DRPK did pay for the initial construction of this building ($750,000,000) (2% of the GDP) but when the USSR collapsed construction was stopped. Get your facts straight.

Cool building the way the weight is spread out I doubt anything but a major a bomb would take that down. The windows will be specially tinted to show the face of the dear leader!
@cityfan22 Of course, you are right. A French building company (Bouygues) was sent there to repair the damages and refurbish the abandoned building. After several months, the task was considered too huge and dangerous, as the building had suffered tremendous structural damages and could be considered inhabitable. SO now, it's just an empty shell.
From what I recall, the outside of the building was finished by Orascom Group an Egyptian company with large investments in North Korean mobile. It looks impressive but it does not function as a working hotel until some time in 2012.
It's a vast improvement on what it was five years ago -- a monstrous building that the DPRK authorities didn't like to talk about. Just another few years and it'll be a fully functioning hotel, the pride and joy of Pyongyang!

1)—To get started, I must say: one can´t analyze all the extent of concepts like socialism, or capitalism in the length of a simple comment on YouTube; YouTube does not provide us with the structure to compose or complete any type of analysis of anything.
Comments are comments, and most people who use this space, do it to mess up with somebody or for some other reason, like insulting, etc.
—That is not my way of dealing with people. So, I am going to spread my response over several comments.
2)—First, and to make it short, socialism is a political system, and capitalism is a financial capital investment system; so, they are different “animals”!
To start with, one must have brains, and know how to use them, when approaching both these concepts.
Most of what I am going to tell you, is mine, and does not come in the books; it does not come in those videos either.
I have referenced those videos, because I hoped that you would be able to dig all the information by yourself!
3)—The fact of one living in USA , does not mean that one has any special status over other people.
If you are an economist, that does not mean that you do know what capitalism is; most economists don´t... Besides, capitalism has little or nothing to do with real economy, as I have shown above.
On the other hand, socialism has a lot to do with political—social, economical and financial—issues, etc.
I´m not going to get into socialism, now; I´m just going to refer to capitalism...
4)—So, what is capitalism?—Capitalism, like all economic systems, uses money to control economy (capitalists´ economy); more, capitalism uses money to control people...
—How?
—To understand that, one must know, first: 1-What is the heart of capitalism; 2-how it works.
Capitalism is like any living body; it has a heart and other organs; it has members, it has a head, etc.
So, getting back to those videos: those who made them, did a good job but not good enough; something is wrong!...
5)—First, money is any legal symbol of value, that can be used as means of echange, to buy or sell things —of value, supposedly: GOODS; it is not exclusive of capitalist system, and it has been used by many civilzations along millenniums...
Money is the "blood" that feeds the heart of capitalist system!
—How?
—Those videos try to make you believe that banks make money! In reality, they don´t; they do not have the means to do so!
Gold used to be the bearing basis for money; not now!
6)—At least, the capitalist monetary system is not based on the value of gold, any more.—After having taken possession of all the gold that small countries kept in their vaults, they (the capitalists) needed to pass to another stage "of the game"; so, they did.
In preparing for that, they had already been using the capitalist PRIVATE BANKING SYSTEM.
The private banking system needed permission, from the States they operated in, to handle the money creation process, and they got it!
7)—They are doing it in such a way, that the majority of the People in the World can´t even dream about how money has been created...
What are those private banks doing?—They use the "MONEY LENDING PROCESS", or in the other way around, the "LOANS PROCESS" to get their scam running and free from fraud suspicion.
They use terms like, "lending" and "loan" to evade the truth, because the first intention, potential "borrowers" have, is to BORROW MONEY, and are not aware of any scams!
8)—So, what is going on?—"What is going on" is so simple that nobody suspects of any wrongdoing from the private banks!
"Borrowers"—I put "borrowers" inside quotes because, as a matter of fact, they are not borrowers, at all!—contrarily to what those videos say, banks don´t make money "out of thin air"; and if they did, that would be FAKE MONEY.
The process of money creation starts when "borrowers" sign down the "LOAN" papers describing the money "LENT", the "LOAN" interest, etc...
9)—As I meant at 6), in capitalist system, money has not any initial back-up on precious metals, at the "MONEY LOANING" time and, for money to exist—money is a SYMBOL OF VALUE, do you remember?—it must have a value somewhere, to back it up!
So, the money that the "BORROWING" papers refer to, will only exist, in its entirety, when the "BORROWER" completes the production of value, at least, equal to the amount of "BORROWED MONEY".
So, who makes the money?—"BORROWERS" MAKE THE MONEY!
10)—So, as you can conclude, private bankers take advantage of governments incapacity to control the MONEY CREATION PROCESS, to get paid for something they are not owed!
The only thing private banks do, when "MONEY BORROWERS" ask for money, is to handle the INITIATION OF THE MONEY CREATION PROCESS; so, they don´t lend any money, and PRIVATE BANKS SHOULD NOT BE PAID ANY INTEREST on "LOANS"; more, BANKS SHOULD NOT GET THE PRINCIPAL; THEY SHOULD NOT GET THE PROPERTY LEFT AS COLLATERAL.
11)—If those videos, "Money as Debt and Money as Debt II Promises Unleashed", are right about "money creation by the private banks, out of thin air", one must conclude that, in the end, there is some kind of "MONEY CREATION"; why? —Because the private bankers get REAL MONEY interest payments for a FAKE MONEY LOAN, and get REAL MONEY as a return of the FAKE MONEY principal. If a foreclosure occurs, private bankers get even richer, by taking possession of the "BORROWER"´s collateral property!...
13)—Would that money, payed to the STATE, be enough to replace all the taxes we pay?
—Probably, YES, because the STATE would not need to borrow money from anybody, and the multiplication factor referred to in those videos (9 to 1, 20 to 1 or whatever) could be adjusted in such a way, that the balance of money application, made by the State, on infra-structure or macro projects could be easily a achieved.
14)—As I have said at 2) "... socialism is a political system, and capitalism is a financial capital investment system; so, they are different “animals...”, capitalism does not have the right mechanisms to control the economy of any country, and that is the real reason behind the present World Crisis!
—The real crisis now running most countries into bankruptcy, is not in the financial system; the real crisis is in the REAL WOLD ECONOMY, but it has been created by the capitalist financial system!

Actually the government did not use the country's resources. It is an Egyptian company called Orascom Group that has mostly invested in this construction. Orascom has also entered into a US$ 400 million deal with the North Korean government to build and run a 3G mobile phone network.

NO Actually the DRPK did pay for the initial construction of this building ($750,000,000) (2% of the GDP) but when the USSR collapsed construction was stopped. Get your facts straight.

I was answering smb's comment, so you should read first what the comment was, and understand the topic before interfering. If the Egyptian company had not invested in this construction, the construction would have never been resumed.

@cityfan22 Of course, you are right. A French building company (Bouygues) was sent there to repair the damages and refurbish the abandoned building. After several months, the task was considered too huge and dangerous, as the building had suffered tremendous structural damages and could be considered inhabitable. SO now, it's just an empty shell.

From what I recall, the outside of the building was finished by Orascom Group an Egyptian company with large investments in North Korean mobile. It looks impressive but it does not function as a working hotel until some time in 2012.

1)—To get started, I must say: one can´t analyze all the extent of concepts like socialism, or capitalism in the length of a simple comment on YouTube; YouTube does not provide us with the structure to compose or complete any type of analysis of anything.
Comments are comments, and most people who use this space, do it to mess up with somebody or for some other reason, like insulting, etc.
—That is not my way of dealing with people. So, I am going to spread my response over several comments.

If you are an economist, that does not mean that you do know what capitalism is; most economists don´t... Besides, capitalism has little or nothing to do with real economy, as I have shown above.
On the other hand, socialism has a lot to do with political—social, economical and financial—issues, etc.

6)—At least, the capitalist monetary system is not based on the value of gold, any more.—After having taken possession of all the gold that small countries kept in their vaults, they (the capitalists) needed to pass to another stage "of the game"; so, they did.
In preparing for that, they had already been using the capitalist PRIVATE BANKING SYSTEM.
The private banking system needed permission, from the States they operated in, to handle the money creation process, and they got it!

They use terms like, "lending" and "loan" to evade the truth, because the first intention, potential "borrowers" have, is to BORROW MONEY, and are not aware of any scams!

The process of money creation starts when "borrowers" sign down the "LOAN" papers describing the money "LENT", the "LOAN" interest, etc...

—Yes, incentives should be made on production!
