Unbelievable. Where I come from, you could spend decades in jail for trying to keep a tiger as a pet. It's such a singularly bad idea to begin with I can't imagine the hubris necessary to rationalize it to oneself. The USA has a long way to go to civilized laws for wildlife.

I'm not from the US but if your country really allows wild big cats as pets, well... don't quite know how to comment. It seems so unreal. I mean, this is 2011... we've come a long way from the original Tarzan stories... or have we?
@TheAntelwi ...i know..it's just so surreal.. I have to force myself into reminding myself every single day that -there are good people in America too..to not fill myself with hatred for the totally absurd.. still, it is so absurd and surreal how ANY country calling themselves CIVILIZED and a SUPER POWER are so RETARDED as to behave like this when the rest of us have NEVER permitted ourselves to take wild animals and keep them as pets in this manner....
i live in ohio and when i was young my grandma and grandpa owned a bobcat...it was amazing seeing it all the time...they owned 22 acres and gave it 16 acres of the land...after about a year they thought it would be better for it if it were in a zoo or back in the wild so they talked to some people and got it into a zoo...i cant remember which zoo but i think it was in columbus...its not much better but its better then their yard
well, and i thought irresponsible dog owners around the country were a problem, i can only imagine irresponsible lion/tiger owners. at least when a dog gets out youll have bite marks on a person and a moderate lawsuit, with these youll have a dead person on your head, and a major lawsuit.
(Didn't have enough space in the first comment) The lady was cleaning around the cage when the tiger mauled her to death, and all the government did and the people who euthenized the poor tiger was blame the tiger and they didn't put any blame towards the lady. But all I can really say is that its not the animal's fault. Its the fault of the person who decided to buy them as pets, when they're not.
@BerserkerDragon2008 Exactly, we wish everyone shared your view on the matter the animals are just doing what they do but they are always the ones that suffer due to the ignorance of people :(
I personally agree to the fact that these big cats don't deserve to be kept as private pets. They can't be housebroken and they can't easily be trained, so all it takes is for the cat (like how that one cat sprinted out of its hiding spot towards the camera) to see its opportunity to strike and then the owner turns around, gets mad at the cats and then subsequently gets them euthenized. Just a couple of years ago here in Canada, a lady had a pet tiger (which she declawed the poor thing)
@johndominicmassa Captive bred cats are not released into the wild especially the cats we rescue that we cannot trace their genetic history, they associate people with food and are not afraid and they lack any real hunting skills. All the cats we rescue are given the best life possible in captivity :)
In the UK you have to get licence if in order to keep big cats and other wild animals, thanks to the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976. If only the US had a similar law. It could also explain why there are many reports and sightings of large cats roaming wild in the UK.
@BigCatRescue Some people do still own them in the uk, but you need a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act law to keep them and to show you are capable of looking after that animal. Otherwise, yes it is illegal to keep them in the UK.
@Charlymaumushi Are you truly that incapable of understanding the point of this video? Can you even possibly fathom what it would be like to live in a cage the size of a small bedroom your entire life? These animals are ~500 lbs of pure muscle and power, beasts that were born to run, climb, hunt, rip, and tear. They are not lap cats or objects for your amusement. Look up your nearest animal shelter, look at the pictures of all the homeless animals desperately in need of a home and then say that.
@thelizardofodd I see the point. I wouldn't keep a dog in that space. But there is more ignorant people out there. If it is that easy to get a liscence maybe they should make it a little more difficult to get or "up" the living conditions of the animal. I would buy big enough territory if I was going to keep a wild animal. I am very aware of the animals that don't have a home. It's sad. Don't worry about me worry about the laws. they allow idiots to do these things.I wan't even buy a fish tank
@jesstherocka I suspect that many of these private owners just want to feel special and unique and/or believe they can bond with these animals and have a special connection with them, until they attack them one day and the animal is destroyed. Ignorance and selfishness.... :(
Why would one go so far to get a permit to keep a wild animal if they are not going to care for it properly? If you love them so much, then leave them where they are better off, in the wild instead of taking them in and putting them in living conditions so bad. I don't consider these animals as PETS, but creatures to be respected for what they are.
How selfish, people like that make me nuts. If you really want to be close to wild cats, then work at a zoo, or for that matter, work at Big Cat Rescue!
There is a process in these people's brain that persuade them owning wild animals is somehow cool, fascinating or whatever. I cannot even conceive the idea of owning such great animals made to live in large territories, free and majestic among the other species. It's so unnatural seeing these animals in those cages. How can those people do that? I really REALLY don't understand
@Juliaundmich I suspect that many of these private owners just want to feel special and unique and/or believe they can bond with these animals and have a special connection with them, until they attack them one day and the animal is destroyed. Ignorance and selfishness.... :(
I cant believe people would keep wild cats like that in their back yard, its just not right, big cats need to be free or at least have lots of space to rome.
Loving this video. It is very true and i love the fact your guys are saying ' NOT big cats'. Well know though some people properly still do not know about Big cats. Have more advertisement in the US and children will know about it like pokemon. lol Good luck sorting out these very scary people.
thats sooo stupid. if a dog was kept in an enclosure similar to the minimum confinement of a big cat, it would be considered cruel, and abuse. why is it okay for a big cat, or any other wild animal to suffer is such crap conditions, but not a dog?
The day where humans let animals have their own lives or even a bigger, more nature-ry place to live in is the day that humans finally learn their mistakes.
What I don't think people realize is that large cats are high maintenance and thus require a lot of attention and care.
Never trade off Fido or Fluffy for something that was never meant to be a pet in the first place, it's like signing a contract with the devil; looks nice on paper, but screws you over in reality.
@truvelocity You know about Tony the Tiger, right? He's in a small cage at a Louisiana truckstop, without a pool or enrichment. His owner says he's 'family' BUT Tony never has peace; is BORED and has never seen anyone like himself; or ever seen stars in the night sky because of spotlights and loud traffic around all the time. He's lived that way almost 11 years, with people throwing rocks and trash at him! Join over 14K people at Free Tony The Tiger By Dee DeSantis on Facebook. ThanX!
@truvelocity That's great and please share to get your friends and family involved. There were over 40K signatures on a petition last year, and the license was still renewed, BUT they know we are watching them and not approving. I'd like to think sooner than later they will get it, and pray it means Tony won't suffer more and/or die before he ever knows life as it should be on this earth.
@truvelocity - With regard to Tony the Truck Stop Tiger, you can also contact the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries asking them not to renew Michael Sandlin's license to keep Tony captive, as they have the final say in this poor cat's fate. His greedy owner, Michael Sandlin, refuses to give him up.
@laceyemily1 Yes, that's right. All the contact numbers, emails and addresses are on the Facebook page, with clicks to petitions too so it's easy to be involved and stay connected to news. Although the license was renewed in December 2010 to keep Tony at that wretched place, it could easily be revoked IF the so-called officials would just do the right thing. Louisiana is a corrupt state - perhaps the most corrupt in our nation . . . All while Tony suffers.
I love having wild pets. I have racoons, opussums, and hundreds of birds. The housing is simple. I leave them run wild in the woods and I create habitat for them and just enjoy them as the wild creatures they are. I would never want to remove them from the wild and pen or cage them. Large cats should be running free or in proper facilities not back yards with idiots.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
OMG I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :DDDDDDDDD AHHH THIS IS LIKE MY DREAM COME TRUE!!!!!! IMA BUY ONE RIGHT NOW!!!! THANKIES FOR TELLING ME!!!!!!! *GOES OFF TO BUY ONE* :DDDDDDDDD IM SO EXCITED!!!!
It would actually cost a lot, you forgot food and medical bills, But still, having a pet tiger would be cool, but it is not needed, tigers need a minimum of a 3 acres, lesser space will give the tiger fatigue and fatness
@Zirus101 Yes, but most owners will not pay for veterinary care and many feed them substandard diets and roadkill, the main point of this video is to show how little you need to provide by law and how cheap it is to own a big cat such as a lion or tiger, how they are treated afterwards is another matter.... :(
1:21 should be enough to make anyone realize that these animals aren't pet material. So fast. So powerful. Imagine what kind of damage they could do if they got out of that cage.
if only BigCatRescue had unlimited funds. changing laws, sweeping across the land uncaging all of our kings, .................... the ultimate rescue!
It really breaks my heart to see such wonderful creatures locked up in cages as small as the ones in the video. I absolutely love big cats, but I would never want one as a pet. They're simply not meant to be pets- they are wild animals. It really amazes me that buying a lion cub is only a click away. All these cats belong at BCR- you guys do such an amazing job at providing and caring for them :) Thanks for posting this video; it really helped raise my awareness on the topic.
It's unlikely that they will stop issuing permits for commercial purposes, and all I really care about is that the minimum requirements for their care is reasonable. That goes for private owners too. While big cats, bears, and large primates are pretty unsuitable for most everyone, these laws tend to make their way toward smaller species that are harmless and that is a violation of our rights.
When you put the focus on private owners, you deflect attention away from the real issue. People keeping big cats isn't the issue, it's how they are kept. It would be unfair to assume that there are no private owners who are good caretakers. It's easy to get private ownership banned, but permits are still issued to people who want to exploit them COMMERCIALLY. Monetary gain + animals is more likely to spell disaster, as with everything.
@ebolaoutkast We agree, but the purpose of this short video was to let people know how easy it is and how little you have to provide if you want to own a tiger, lion etc... There may be some good caretakers out there but this doesn't change the fact that it is wrong to "own" these animals in the first place. It definitely is not easy to ban the private ownership of big cats, believe us we have been petitioning for over a decade, changes are being made, but they are painfully slow.
My sister has been researching the hobby of owning tarantulas, and my god, that is such a strict practice!! She talked personally to a founder of a British organization that deals in tarantula trade and he told her all of the rules and regulations and laws and they are really wonderful! It makes me think why no other animal is cared for as well as captive tarantulas seem to be.
Oh my god. It breaks my heart behond words. How could they do this to these beautiful cats that deserve the best of everything in their lives as well as any other animal. The cruelty is behond horrible. I cant bare this! The picture of the tiger locked indoors looking out the window killed me. All the pictures did.
This needs to stop!! I want to help in any way I can. I just wish we had more money. :( :( I have to try! These poor babies. ♥♥♥♥
What a sad story and even sadder are the people taking on pets they deep down know they shouldn't have. They obviously use these pets to fill the empty voids in their lives. No matter what, these backyard cat owners are some extremely selfish dirtbags.
I Love big cats and if i had the funds, land and time i would love to have some but i would NEVER buy one and take it from its own country and lands...i would only take in ones that are being treated horrible such as being stuck in a small cage!! That really upsets me =*(
There are stupid laws for everything and no sufficient regulation for owning a wild animal... It doesn´t make sense.. If you don´t have place, time, money and qualification, don´t get a tiger!
when i get older im starting my own wildlife rehabilitation center. Im going to use my grandparents farm which is over a mile long. I will rescue a big cat myself but use my investments to give it the best captive home in the world. Not like these bastards that put the animals in small cages. I can see the habitar in my head right now. Over 200 feet of grassy land to run around in. A giant pool to cool off on hot days.
I don't think much of people who have big cats as pets.Unless you are a professional trainer /veterinarian (such as Doug Suess with the late Bart the Bear) you should not own these beautiful creatures. The part where "There are more tigers in backyards than in the wild," that is truly DISTURBING and pathetic on our part. I don't feel sorry for these stupid (I would call them something else but you can fill it in) people who own these animals when the animal winds up having them for lunch either.
it shouldn't be legal to own big cats as pets. it should be left to professionals who ACTUALLY care for them.the only exception would be if the person found the cat in question orphaned or seriously injured
that sucks there are more *pet* tigers then in freedom!

SPEACHLESS!, I'm used to seeing crap like that in certain parts of Asia, but had no idea ANYWHERE in the west was this backwards and barbaric.

I have to force myself into reminding myself every single day that -there are good people in America too..to not fill myself with hatred for the totally absurd.. still, it is so absurd and surreal how ANY country calling themselves CIVILIZED and a SUPER POWER are so RETARDED as to behave like this when the rest of us have NEVER permitted ourselves to take wild animals and keep them as pets in this manner....

i live in ohio and when i was young my grandma and grandpa owned a bobcat...it was amazing seeing it all the time...they owned 22 acres and gave it 16 acres of the land...after about a year they thought it would be better for it if it were in a zoo or back in the wild so they talked to some people and got it into a zoo...i cant remember which zoo but i think it was in columbus...its not much better but its better then their yard
drakefake44 11 months ago
well, and i thought irresponsible dog owners around the country were a problem, i can only imagine irresponsible lion/tiger owners. at least when a dog gets out youll have bite marks on a person and a moderate lawsuit, with these youll have a dead person on your head, and a major lawsuit.
Gebora 11 months ago
(Didn't have enough space in the first comment) The lady was cleaning around the cage when the tiger mauled her to death, and all the government did and the people who euthenized the poor tiger was blame the tiger and they didn't put any blame towards the lady. But all I can really say is that its not the animal's fault. Its the fault of the person who decided to buy them as pets, when they're not.
BerserkerDragon2008 11 months ago 3
@BerserkerDragon2008 Exactly, we wish everyone shared your view on the matter the animals are just doing what they do but they are always the ones that suffer due to the ignorance of people :(

donna1948ful 11 months ago
I personally agree to the fact that these big cats don't deserve to be kept as private pets. They can't be housebroken and they can't easily be trained, so all it takes is for the cat (like how that one cat sprinted out of its hiding spot towards the camera) to see its opportunity to strike and then the owner turns around, gets mad at the cats and then subsequently gets them euthenized. Just a couple of years ago here in Canada, a lady had a pet tiger (which she declawed the poor thing)

When a big cat is rescued or abandoned then found, that cat cannot be immediately released back into the wild, right?
johndominicmassa 11 months ago
@johndominicmassa Captive bred cats are not released into the wild especially the cats we rescue that we cannot trace their genetic history, they associate people with food and are not afraid and they lack any real hunting skills. All the cats we rescue are given the best life possible in captivity :)

In the UK you have to get licence if in order to keep big cats and other wild animals, thanks to the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976. If only the US had a similar law. It could also explain why there are many reports and sightings of large cats roaming wild in the UK.
Sean0fenton 11 months ago
@Sean0fenton I thought it was banned in the uK in 1976, can you still own them??
BigCatRescue 11 months ago
@BigCatRescue Some people do still own them in the uk, but you need a licence under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act law to keep them and to show you are capable of looking after that animal. Otherwise, yes it is illegal to keep them in the UK.

Charlymaumushi 11 months ago
@Charlymaumushi Are you truly that incapable of understanding the point of this video? Can you even possibly fathom what it would be like to live in a cage the size of a small bedroom your entire life? These animals are ~500 lbs of pure muscle and power, beasts that were born to run, climb, hunt, rip, and tear. They are not lap cats or objects for your amusement. Look up your nearest animal shelter, look at the pictures of all the homeless animals desperately in need of a home and then say that.
thelizardofodd 11 months ago

@BigCatRescue Those people deserve a nuclear meltdown in their backyard.
esensas 11 months ago 2
That's insane!!
Why would one go so far to get a permit to keep a wild animal if they are not going to care for it properly? If you love them so much, then leave them where they are better off, in the wild instead of taking them in and putting them in living conditions so bad. I don't consider these animals as PETS, but creatures to be respected for what they are.
I never knew this - i've got a lot to learn!

ThanX!
onekinkstar 11 months ago 2
@onekinkstar OK, I'm on it.
truvelocity 11 months ago 2
@truvelocity That's great and please share to get your friends and family involved. There were over 40K signatures on a petition last year, and the license was still renewed, BUT they know we are watching them and not approving. I'd like to think sooner than later they will get it, and pray it means Tony won't suffer more and/or die before he ever knows life as it should be on this earth.
onekinkstar 11 months ago
@truvelocity - With regard to Tony the Truck Stop Tiger, you can also contact the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries asking them not to renew Michael Sandlin's license to keep Tony captive, as they have the final say in this poor cat's fate. His greedy owner, Michael Sandlin, refuses to give him up.
laceyemily1 11 months ago 3
@laceyemily1 Yes, that's right. All the contact numbers, emails and addresses are on the Facebook page, with clicks to petitions too so it's easy to be involved and stay connected to news. Although the license was renewed in December 2010 to keep Tony at that wretched place, it could easily be revoked IF the so-called officials would just do the right thing. Louisiana is a corrupt state - perhaps the most corrupt in our nation . . . All while Tony suffers.
onekinkstar 11 months ago
I love having wild pets. I have racoons, opussums, and hundreds of birds. The housing is simple. I leave them run wild in the woods and I create habitat for them and just enjoy them as the wild creatures they are. I would never want to remove them from the wild and pen or cage them. Large cats should be running free or in proper facilities not back yards with idiots.
martenfisher1 11 months ago
People who keep big cats in those tiny cages should be locked in a cell that size! May seem harsh, but I love these animals!

It would actually cost a lot, you forgot food and medical bills, But still, having a pet tiger would be cool, but it is not needed, tigers need a minimum of a 3 acres, lesser space will give the tiger fatigue and fatness
Zirus101 11 months ago
@Zirus101 Yes, but most owners will not pay for veterinary care and many feed them substandard diets and roadkill, the main point of this video is to show how little you need to provide by law and how cheap it is to own a big cat such as a lion or tiger, how they are treated afterwards is another matter.... :(

While big cats, bears, and large primates are pretty unsuitable for most everyone, these laws tend to make their way toward smaller species that are harmless and that is a violation of our rights.
ebolaoutkast 11 months ago
When you put the focus on private owners, you deflect attention away from the real issue. People keeping big cats isn't the issue, it's how they are kept. It would be unfair to assume that there are no private owners who are good caretakers. It's easy to get private ownership banned, but permits are still issued to people who want to exploit them COMMERCIALLY. Monetary gain + animals is more likely to spell disaster, as with everything.
ebolaoutkast 11 months ago
