@kiminokami: LOL yea i have seen him a judge is several episodes and sometimes i just wish he would shut the f up...his dubbed voice is horrid and annoying...where's the duct tape when u need it?
@feslenraster What I mean is that even the American band called Korn is full of talentless douchebags. Whoever is called "Korn," in any language, is a douchebag.
@kiminokami yeah I realize there's also a "Korn" band...and actually KORN the "actor/whatever" IS a douche. just look at the way he is on the Iron Chef judgment sections! but, regardless....there are some pretty stupid names out there for bands etc...what is one more dumb name added to the list?
The Mexican dishes, however, seem easier to make, with some practice and a few failed attempts , by us common-folk.
But when it comes to non-European / South Asian cuisine, the Japanese palate tends to be very unadventurous.
Chinese and Indian food is always prepared in Japan in a way that poorly mimics authentic cuisine in a flavourless mess, catering to Japanese sensibilities.
Watanabe showed well here. Despite not winning, he was able to display his style for all to see, and 71pts will win a few battles. Kobe had his A game, and props to him for that.
I agree, I think it should really be a blind taste test to remove the unconscious elements of prejudice.
this is truly important because, for example, Gordon Ramsay (a 3 star chef ie. the highest culinary accolade) in his show (the f word) takes on a non-cook and they make exactly the same dish. The tasting is blind, and he looses A LOT.
I have thought the same thing, that if the judges did not know whose food they were tasting the judging would be unbiased but in a way it would do away with the discussion that seems to pay an important role. But yes, it would be interesting to at least do that once or twice
PS. As a side comment, man, I really admire Kobe. He's sooooo talented for such a young chef - and I wish I can eat his mango tortellini, appetizer and duck in a heartbeat!
To discount the show as a joke isn't exactly true. There are a lot of unsaid things about the judging that are beyond just bias for the Iron Chefs. First, (being Chinese myself), most Asian cultures aren't that gungho about Mexican cuisine. Many are anti-cheese to begin with, the challenger's restaurant is the ONLY pure Mex. rest. in Tokyo and Mexican food in general is far too strong for the Japanese. So yes, Kobe culturally had an advantage, Italian food being very popular in Japan.
They edit the reactions in order to make it seem like it was closer than it actually was, to add some drama. Also, when was the last time you went to a restaurant where the chef didn't know the "theme ingredient" before he started his shift? The iron chefs have a lot more experience in this particular impromptu style of cooking.
It is not as one sided as you make it sound. Yes the show was slanted for the Iron Chefs. The best record was Ishinabe (7-1), followed by Michiba, The Maestro of Japanese Cooking, who won ~85% of his battles. The rest of the Iron Chefs won about 75% of the time. With a few in the low 60%'s. But equality in judging is not why most people watch the show.

Every culture has own cuisine.
So every country's people has each tendency.
And I think it's not "dislike".
Maybe it's "used to" or "not used to".
Many Japanese people isn't used to Mexican or Tex-Mex foods,in my opinion.
Maybe these judges weren't used to Mexican food, too.
