hey guys.. if you want to play online, use ArmA 1.14 and Tunngle (zero-configuration virtual private network). It's easier to use and more stable than hamachi. It has virtual rooms so it is easy to find others who play it. Cheers!
The one setback I can think of for this game is it's graphics, they are terrible compared to most games, but other wise it's the best combat game there is :)
Though the game play was slightly improved in ArmA 2 the transition of graphics was a nuisance if you ask me. When the game first came out I couldn't differentiate between the guy shooting me and a bush.

The original ArmA took several years and many patches to become what it is now because it was unstable upon release, I'm sure ArmA 2 is just as great and will be greater once it has been patched as well.

guys i have 3.0 ghz proc. ati radeon 4650 hd 1 gig vid card. windows 7. i cant get armed assault to run. why? i tried to do what some aussie told me, dl and install up to 1.5 patch. i did. didnt wrk...dont know if i did it rite.somebody please help me out.

are you useing the beta shortcut? the patch is a beta folder and comes with an icon, you have to use that icon for the patch, cant just run reg arma off an existing patch, not tot surt what your situation is but all i can tell you based on the info i got

Probably best game ever developed. The only thing I'd like more is an adaptation of Clancy's "Red Storm" under this game.
And maybe multinational forces - let's face it - in moder combat You would have at least a dozen of different nations, each using their own equipment and vehicles. But that's just my point of view of course.
People don't realise just how insanely massive the battles can be in this game, there are so many mods as well to add to the realism and immersion, there is no other game like it, Operation Flashpoint and Armed Assault are two of the greatest war games ever made, don't buy any of that battlefield crap, you're just fueling EA to publish more and more crap games that have no substance, Armed Assault is the game for the true military sim enthusiast.
@phreak761 arma is very fun and expansive but battlefeild is fun too if you just want to jump in and play and not worry about how to script every thing and spend a long time learning to play the game well
Phreak! U're absolutely right! I wanted to write down the same, but I've read this. I think EA is nothing more, just a castle built from money. And the young teenage kids love it! They think they can shoot with an assault rifle without any recoil, and survive a headshot, with large HP... I hate the BF too...

Yup, choppers are almost perfect, and with few little mods you can get them to perfection. But after few months of playing I still can't fly their planes the way I'd like to.
Simple, people don't have patience to learn the game and how it's played. I've played online games forever (I'm 30) This is by far the MOST realistic mil sim game you'll ever play. You can shoot, drive, fly anything and everything in real world military. It does have a huge learning curve though. So you need help to start playing

The reason i'm interested in the game is because I currently play Project reality the Battelfield 2 mod which has significantly ramped up the realism in BF2.
So basically i'm looking for a game that would equal that level of realism, especailly online when interacting with teammates. However i'm worried that the bugs and glitches might ruin the gameplay. I'm downloading the online demo at the mo.

But when it comes to realism Arma is significantly better then BF2 in the simple fact the size of the combat zone, the ability to fly all over the map, drive all over the map. In fact it's so large that you constantly need air lifts to the front lines. Just be warned, the demo is nothing like the full game because you miss out on the mods. Arma currently with the latest patches has no known glitches/bugs.

BFBC is an arcadeesque shooter. the maps are relatively small, and the custimization of weapon systems is completely absent. if you are looking to pick up and play then go for BFBC, but if you are looking for something more then you go with ArmA. These 'games' arent even in the same genre.
When you consider it was made as more of a recruiting tool than a sophisticated game, you can't really expect much more from America's Army than to pander to regular FPS players.
There so many aspects but I feel like telling you about all of them right now! ArmA is naturally more "mature". It's a virtual world.. this includes a huge environment that changes (Weather, time, lightings..). You have 100% freewill by default. Walk anywhere, drive anything, do "anything". I recently had a nice match online.. in a mission to conquer the entire island (400 square kilometers - that's a looot). And I played all day.. When I started it was sunny out side. Before I finished playing
And we were still in the west side of the island (there is West and East in this conflict - West was our territory). I played with lots of other people online, each of them were either working in the same squad or leading AI squads together. Air-support it's something the guys on the ground feel enlightened to have.. And also in times where your mission is far from base so a pilot will take you there (flying choppers well require damn skills.. flying feels very very real and not easy at all)
And.. Human skilled pilots (who also reached high rank to fly them in this specific mission) were the onces bombing enemy tanks laser aimed targets (love doing that). You love it when the situation is crappy and then you get lots of forces coming to back you up from ground and air.. it feels so authentic. (Also ArmA has way better graphics and feel than BF2). Sooo by the time we captured and -cleared- the last town before the Opfor capital city. Night fell, like in Black Hawk Down the film
No shit! It was raining in the abandoned, authentically destroyed city. While everyone was going to the capital city, I was still behind with 2 other AI controlled soldiers.. requesting pick up back to base because of my Rank Promotion (cause I wanted to pick up a new chopper to fly). With the nigh visions on and the rain.. walking in at ease, patrolling the main street.. then comes from far an armored vehicle.. our mobile "HQ", some player was driving it closer to the capital city, now that
We cleared this city, it was safe for the HQ to move. As he was driving by us, I -saluted- him and "ordered" my squad to do the same.. He then reached us and halted. Was asking me how's things were going and if I need a ride. lol. He didn't have place for more people to board his vehicle so he kept on. And then someone on the radio announced that they are ready to pick me up... To sum up, it's DAMN COOL. It doesn't feel like much of a game. You don't really play, you survive doing your job.
You know it's virtual and you enjoy the "as if being in a real battle" adrenalin. However, how said that realistic is more fun? For me it is but most gamers prefer games that are "easy" or the very least, games they stay a live while running in an open field. It's the hardest FPS I ever played. And it's my favorite in terms of realism, tactics and feel. But I must mention, it's real heavy. Maybe patch 1.14 did a real good job but still it's not 100% smooth for me, but I have 5 year old computer

Yes, almost all campaign missions includes civilians on them and multiplayer missions only if map maker has decided that. also every civilian vehicle is available to use by players.
ArmA and OFP are open world games while CoD 4 isn't,that's why they eat more RAM and Vista eats more ram than XP sp2 so ArmA+vista is not a good combination i recommend you to o back to XP vista is a piece of crap.
It's a shame the game is such a resource hog. I run cod4 on full settings at 1280*960 just fine, yet when running the arma demo on medium to low settings it laggs.

ArmA 2 is in a league of its own. Its pc only, far more complicated, and suits mostly more mature players with kick ass game pc's.
I enjoyed COD MW for a while but COD's constant kiddy action maps got boring and the hacks finnished it for me.

When you consider it was made as more of a recruiting tool than a sophisticated game, you can't really expect much more from America's Army than to pander to regular FPS players.

You can't compare them. 2 different games.
BF2 if you want to run around shooting anything that moves. ArmA is best played with tatics and with teamwork etc.

batlefield2 is an arcade style of action game. this is more of a war simulator, and as with all simulators, its a bit stiff and cold.
you can sum this game up with longer transportation times, shorter battles, with bigger armies....

There so many aspects but I feel like telling you about all of them right now! ArmA is naturally more "mature". It's a virtual world.. this includes a huge environment that changes (Weather, time, lightings..). You have 100% freewill by default. Walk anywhere, drive anything, do "anything". I recently had a nice match online.. in a mission to conquer the entire island (400 square kilometers - that's a looot). And I played all day.. When I started it was sunny out side. And we were still in the west side of the island (there is West and East in this conflict - West was our territory). I played with lots of other people online, each of them were either working in the same squad or leading AI squads together. Air-support it's something the guys on the ground feel enlightened to have.. And also in times where your mission is far from base so a pilot will take you there (flying choppers well require damn skills.. flying feels very very real and not easy at all)

And.. Human skilled pilots (who also reached high rank to fly them in this specific mission) were the onces bombing enemy tanks laser aimed targets (love doing that). You love it when the situation is crappy and then you get lots of forces coming to back you up from ground and air.. it feels so authentic. (Also ArmA has way better graphics and feel than BF2). Sooo by the time we captured and -cleared- the last town before the Opfor capital city. Night fell, like in Black Hawk Down the film

No shit! It was raining in the abandoned, authentically destroyed city. While everyone was going to the capital city, I was still behind with 2 other AI controlled soldiers.. requesting pick up back to base because of my Rank Promotion (cause I wanted to pick up a new chopper to fly). We cleared this city, it was safe for the HQ to move. As he was driving by us, I -saluted- him and "ordered" my squad to do the same.. He then reached us and halted. Was asking me how's things were going and if I need a ride. lol. He didn't have place for more people to board his vehicle so he kept on. And then someone on the radio announced that they are ready to pick me up... To sum up, it's DAMN COOL. It doesn't feel like much of a game. You don't really play, you survive doing your job.

You know it's virtual and you enjoy the "as if being in a real battle" adrenalin. However, how said that realistic is more fun? For me it is but most gamers prefer games that are "easy" or the very least, games they stay a live while running in an open field. It's the hardest FPS I ever played. And it's my favorite in terms of realism, tactics and feel. But I must mention, it's real heavy. Maybe patch 1.14 did a real good job but still it's not 100% smooth for me, but I have 5 year old computer

Yes, almost all campaign missions includes civilians on them and multiplayer missions only if map maker has decided that. also every civilian vehicle is available to use by players.

ArmA and OFP are open world games while CoD 4 isn't,that's why they eat more RAM and Vista eats more ram than XP sp2 so ArmA+vista is not a good combination i recommend you to o back to XP vista is a piece of crap.

It's a shame the game is such a resource hog. I run cod4 on full settings at 1280*960 just fine, yet when running the arma demo on medium to low settings it laggs.

just bought the full version and it runs smooth on highest settings, just don't try to fly a helicopter with highest setting and highest range...
