@juvoboi It was absolutely amazing, people didn't know what the heck happened, he just took the outside and blazed through Button on arguably the toughest part to overtake on the circuit (so tight), wasn't his best, but it was amazing, too bad the ferrari just can't hold up on hard tires. :)
During the 2011 Japan GP, David Hobbs was talking about the pass that Alonso made on Schumacher at the 130R corner in 2005 and how it was the bravest pass he'd ever seen. It certainly was a hell of a pass. I don't think Alonso ever lifted.
To prove how difficult this overtake is I will give you an example:If you remember Rosberg trying to pass Buemi in excatly the same point in 2010,he made the move firstly, but then went deeply wide and lost about 3-4 positions.Getting ahead of Schumacher was nothing compared to the challange of keeping the car on the track cause you can see Alonso doesn't have the racing line and still got in full throttle in this corner. You have to be very brave to do this. That's for sure.
Looks better than it was. He was past him before the turn in point, knew Schumacher would have to back out. Nothing compared to Hakkinen's move at Spa in 2000
This corner is where they recorded the record downforce of 6G. Gravity giving highly blurred vision and difficulty raising hands 1cm. Twice that capable of a touring car and serves to demonstrate the difference in driving speeds.
2) MS' F2005 was on a wet setup in the dry, R25 was not
3) FA was 4 laps of fuel lighter than MS
4) When FA had a slipstream, and as MS went to the inside to defend, FA had the racing line so MS had to lift off or he wouldnt have made the corner at that angle
5) What is spectacular was that MS held him off for as long as he did (6 laps)!
The overtake was more brave than good, it could have ended in a collision
Can someone explain to me why this is considered one of the best overtakee? Like what's the significance of the 130R etc.. I don't really watch F1. Being better informed about it would make me appreciate this video further. (: Thanks.
Nico Rosberg tried to overtake a torro rosso through 130R in 2010, hadn't passed the car by the corner entry and then still tried to take him on the outside, inevitably losing traction and twitching, but managed to control the slide. I reckon he showed just as much balls as Alonso even if it didn't stick. There's footage of the move in the 2010 FIA race edit
The fuel was so corrosive that it had to be drained immediately after every practice and qualify sessions. breathing it was not a good idea and some of the exotic fuels cost as much as $300 per liter !!!!!
meaning a tank was as expensive as a small car .
exotic aromatic hydrocarbons with very high calorific value ..
Schumacher overtook Senna in the same way (exactly the same!) in France, 1993, but probably the overtaking of Schumacher was better, because Schumacher had a car similar than Senna´s.
Not like this, where Alonso has a much better car than Schumacher´s.
@rubensamg Oh yes because the seize of the engine matters so much.... in the 80's BMW made 1300hp with a 4 cylinder 1,6 liter engine.. The thing that matters is how much turbo pressure they are allowed to run.
@dude2106 comparing the engines now and then is useless due to the diff regs.
back then they measured it by octane rating , density, boiling curve , vapor pressure.
so pretty much what the chemical company wintershall did research and found chemicals to add to the crazy Non petroleum fuel to work very well in turbo engines !!!
so they had non petroleum fuel with chem additives to meet the regs
@mushrume So? I know the turbo engines are not going to deliver 1300hp, because they will be restricted, but i am just saying that the engine layout don't mean anything. It is how the engines are regulated that matters. If they were allowed to go bananas with the four cylinder turbo engines they could make them deliver 1500hp in the blink of the eye.
@dude2106 you would not be able to push those kind of numbers with the current fuel reggs.
thats what i was saying. you need the exotic fuels . and those engines were very unreliable in that configuration generating too much heat and way too much stress on drivetrain parts to handle it for a whole race distance. they were changed out after qualy. we will not see these numbers !!
and the sound of10 cannot be replaced , and the way it delivers the power .
@mushrume No you wouldn't. Just turn up the boost pressure. It will drink petrol like a maniac, but it will be able to get those numbers. And on reliability, the engines back then were unreliable because there were no electronic engine management system around. It was some sort of semi mechanic system, which weren't really great to control the boost. Today with better materials and better engine management they wouldn't need to change them all the time.
5) What is spectacular was that MS held him off for as long as he did (six laps)!
The overtake was more brave than good, it could have ended in a collision.
Big whoopee.....this is nothing compared to Kimi's last lap overtake around the outside in the same race, that was an all out ballz move. This is a "let me turn and hope Schumi has more sense than me and brakes" move.
Question.... what does Alonso press on his steering wheel when he's approaching Michael?? He presses a button for like 2 o 3 seconds then lets go... I don't remember KERS existing back then so what is it???
This was an end of an era. Last year of the V10 and the dethroning of Michael by changing the tire rules to favor Michelin. Had to do something since Schumi had completely gutted the sport for 5 years running.
@sargatanas88 yes well Uh it's racing and you give and take. schumacher could be stupid and try to make the bend with alonso but it would probably be a high speed accident :\\

Incredible overtake, had me on the edge of my seat. Took some real talent and balls of steel to pull that one of. And this is coming from an Alonso hater.
Schumacher sould have watched this vid several times before decide back to F1. The real winner of 5 of his titles are the Ferrari machines and the lack of competitors (Irvine, Hakkinen, Barrochelo)
@GPRacing1000 Probably. Though I wish he'd still be with Renault. I'd love to see Fernando as World Champion, but I'd hate to see Ferrari climbing the top.
Many things were said about this season, mainly that Alonso won against better cars. As far as I see, and regarding McLaren, the car was faster but could not finish many races due to reliability problems. I wouldn´t call that a better car!
Regarding Ferrari, they never stood a chance, probably because of the Bridgestone tyres, not a better package anyway!!
you can have a great car but overtake in a corner like the 130R needs some skills...
BTW,in 2005 mclaren was faster than renault but reliability of Mercedes engines was...LOL
so many times raikkonen starts 10 positions back on the grid cause the explosion of the (very powerful - very explosive) Mercedes engines.
similar overtake at last lap, raikkonen on fisichella at T1,he start 20th on the grid cause of 2 engine broken (one in the previous race and one in the practice,if my memory works)
A guy like Massa has plenty of raw speed, but poor race craft, so he does not have that ability to make his way up through the field, and making these brake moves like this!
Thats what make drivers like Alonso and Raikkonen so good!...race craft!
The beautiful looking cars look even more beautiful when they're are strong and quick. The 2006 Renault is also very beautiful, especially because they have cars No 1 and 2!!
Fuji is a horrible circuit, particularly the final sector. The only redeeming feature of it is that there is usually a rainstorm of biblical proportions which livens things up. Apart from that, it's just another horrible circuit designed by that dim-witted kraut Hermann Tilke.

not if you don't even have to leave the racing line...

Schumi let alonso pass when he saw that alonso was faster in the outside line, otherwise they would have crash at 300 kph!

Many things were said about this season, mainly that Alonso won against better cars. As far as I see, and regarding McLaren, the car was faster but could not finish many races due to reliability problems. I wouldn´t call that a better car!
Regarding Ferrari, they never stood a chance, probably because of the Bridgestone tyres, not a better package anyway!!

you are right, i am an alonso fan but the 2005-2006 renault was a very good car

you can have a great car but overtake in a corner like the 130R needs some skills...

This is what is called "Race Craft"!
A guy like Massa has plenty of raw speed, but poor race craft, so he does not have that ability to make his way up through the field, and making these brake moves like this!
Thats what make drivers like Alonso and Raikkonen so good!...race craft!

Of course not, it was a titans battle between a MP4-15 and a F1-2000 (same power) this it's just a crappy F1-2005 being overtaked by a better R25

The 2005 Renault is, in my opinion, one of the best looking F1 cars ever!

The beautiful looking cars look even more beautiful when they're are strong and quick. The 2006 Renault is also very beautiful, especially because they have cars No 1 and 2!!
EmphaticItalic 2 years ago 5
@jmacaldo83 but the Mclaren 2008 car is much better.

Fuji is a horrible circuit, particularly the final sector. The only redeeming feature of it is that there is usually a rainstorm of biblical proportions which livens things up. Apart from that, it's just another horrible circuit designed by that dim-witted kraut Hermann Tilke.

Yeah... except that Kimi made the exact same move a few laps later.

Not at the 130R corner though, Kimi took Michael down the start/finish straight.
