Anticipation of a night on the town with the understanding that it cannot last. This and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! were on the heels of Voulez-Vous. ABBA was riding a wave. Disco was rampant with its throbbing, pulsating beat, and sexual encounters were easy.
@hasanrolf No i dont agree. Agnetha found other interests in life after Linda was born and of course them divorcing made things difficult, not so much the Fame, although Agnetha was a bit scared by all the attention especially in Australia with screaming mobs at the concerts.
@Stallion1964 Сould you answer me couple of questions. Why you have connected Abba's ending with Agnetha and have you ever read her book As I Am? Thanks in advance.
@OldFanMr I have over the years watched many interviews from all 4 members and what i have said is the 2 divorces from the group put a huge strain on the group which started the decline and at that time Agnetha after having a baby wanted different things in her life, i guess she re-evaluated her priorities? Just my view over the past 30 years as a ABBA fan, others may see it differently?
@Stallion1964 Yes it's true, the family and motherhood were highest priority for Agtnetha, but it doesn't mean automatically, that she was the reason of ABBA's end.. As you know, Linda was born 1973 and Agnetha continued for 10 long hard years working with group. Moreover, she had continued on with the group after her divorce from Bjorn for FOUR years, despite it was extremely painful for her, to be with ex-husband on the same stage. It was the heroic act. To be continued...
@Stallion1964 I'd like to pay your attention on one sentence from her book.
“So, talk of me ending ABBA’s career is wrong. Where has that rumour come from and why does it continue to circulate?” Page 86.
I’m believe her. It’s well-known fact, that ABBA’s end was the result of men’s decision to start make musical with Tim Rice in 1981, but no fault of Agnetha or Frida. But, also I agree with you, main reason of ABBA’s end was two divorces. But who would dare to blame girls?
@OldFanMr Yeah i guess each member has their own viewpoint of what happened at the time. I love Agnetha and wouldnt dare to pin point the blame at her. Its one of those things that happen and people take different directions. Thanks for your viewpoint also it is appreciated.
Usually a lot of band are worst live than in record, happily ABBA is very better in live, you can really listen to the whole power of their voices, FANTASTIC!
ABBA one of the best bands ever to exist but I have a question. how many of you ended up here after listening to the ABSOLUTELY AWESOME Therion cover?
In 2006 for her "Confessions tour", Madonna would use this look. I tcan't be more obvious, plus her hit back then, HUNG UP, was a GIMMEGIMME GIMME sampler
It's both Frida and Agnetha's voices plus Bjorn and the male backup. You can see at 3:31 that the female backups weren't singing. It's Frida's voice you can hear trailing after Agnetha backs off from the mic.
i wonder if its the female backing singers giving this track real vocal strength? i reckon one of the backing singers is performing the intro with bjorn. and at the end of the choruses, agnetha stops singing when the powerful female vocal sound continues! maybe its frida who is giving it the real power here...listen to the chorus starting "when the night comes with the action".who is singing ?
@SafeSocks: Did you forget to take your pills again?
Just look up the complete text on the Net if you don´t understand English well enough!
It is neither about nuclear power plants, nor is it a protext song .It is simply a celebration of Life, of dancing a whole night long, of having fun -- but also it is about the realization that nothing lasts ( that´s the "scattered driftwood" part)
As I said: Just look up the complete text on the Net!
I keep hearing something about driftwood on a beach and giant dynamos, but I can't understand anything else. What is this song supposed to be about, exactly?
@mattanaih Quite simple really - summer nights in the city of Stockholm are quite short, eliminating the need for a great deal of artificial lighting. In this manner the Swedes conserve energy and preclude the need to build additional power plants. To conserve energy in the winter, of course, the Swedes merely burrow into the snow and hibernate.
I'm no one to stand on behalf of Frida or Agnetha but I'd like to say they were anything but ordinary women. Just look at them here at their very best prime! Whatever your sexual preferences are, you must acknowledge their true talent and beauty. I dare you try not to, impossible. And the guys were terrific too! They look like friendly and relaxed guys! If would like to invite them a cold beer, why not? after all I have so much to thank them! that's the least I can do.
Some people are just silly or perhaps blind the musical talent of the group is beyond doubt, and the beauty of both women is unquestionable. Sometime it is just a matter of colour, blonde or brunette? I love both. :-)

Poor Agnetha: she had managed to always be in the center of clips and photographers' shot (you can notice it in this vid), but she always remained the Ugly Duckling, pushed aside by obvious-star Frida. Not an easy part, I admit... But, ABBA rules!!!
@discouniverse Where are you from to say Frida is 'ordinary'? Nothing to compare with poor Agnetha... Did you know Frida could have started a model carrier at that time if she wanted to... but she married a Crown Prince, though she didn't sing anymore at that time... Success makes all mouthes shut up!!!
I love this song and ABBA so much! I think ABBA is the best artists is the world. They made so good musics and lyrics, they sang so beautiful. I wanna say them "please come back again!"
Ake Sudquist is the second drummer with the mustache, and bandleader Anders Eljas is on second keyboards, Benny on first keyboards, Bjorn on specialty guitar, with vocals in this song, Aggie and Frida on lead vocals.
Many queries in the comments about the band and the back-up singers: Thomas Ledin, son in law of Abba manager Stig Anderson is the male backing singer, Birgitta Worhmann (short hair) and Liz Ohman are the female backing singers, Rutger Gunnarson on bass guitar, Lasse Wellander (beard) first guitar, Mats Ronander (blue tie) second guitar, Ola Brunkert is the first drummer, I forget the name of the second drummer (with mustache).
The timing may have been right for "Dancing Queen" to be ABBA's finest hour in the U.S., but this song somehow hits me better. And music history's most brilliant female leading vocalists knew how to work the crowd...stunning.

Who said Disco Music was a synthetic/prefab/soulless thing!!?? This is LIFE MUSIC at its best. Amazing musicians, awesome singers, ... incredible performance! Actually, much, much better than any rock band nowadays (and better than many "rockers" of that time). They might be "just" a Pop band, but they sure rock way harder than, say, Kiss. That´s a fact!!
@RachmaninovDESU That´s probably true. But for different reasons, I guess. I mean, Abba were shinny, glamurous & funny. On the other hand, Kiss were plain "Faggot Rock". Don´t get me wrong, NOTHING against Gay people, and -therefore- nothing against gay musicians playing in a rock band -or any other band, for that matter- but I just don´t appreciate "Gay Rock". That is, mostly hetero men, w ridiculous macho attitude, pretending 2b hard while playing embarrasingly soft music, like KISS.
If I had a time machine, I would first go back to Wembley 1979 and screaming jump to ABBA, especially Agnetha. Then to a concert with my other favorite Led Zeppelin. It's crazy I know, but that's the way it is.
@aluzzz000 I would fly my time machine back to '77 Australia to participate in that wonderful wackiness known as ABBAmania. To me, that was ABBA at their absolute peak: They had just become legitimate international superstars, they were still new and fresh, the romantic aura was intact and the enthusiasm was genuine. And why would Zep and ABBA be a crazy combo? Plant was a big ABBA fan, and Zep recorded their last album in ABBA's Polar Music studio.
@mattanaih Thanks for your reply, now I feel little bit less crazy. Of course you have right about their tour of Australia, it was something truly special. But ABBA had also a big success in England with six sold-out evenings at Wembley and I've just read that it was 3.5 MILLION requests for tickets to their concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall --- That says a lot about ABBA's greatness!

@depreciousMODE they were offered a BILLION US$ about 10 years ago, and turned it down; and why bother, when most of it will go to the Swedish govt anyway?
This is a SUPER duper Group OF the 70's and was apart of The BEST that Disco Had to Offer. Songs like "I have a Dream", "Fernando", "Does Your Mother Know" and "Take a Chance on Me". Are so unpretentious, decent, and fun that no one could write or sing stuff like that anymore. ABBA, generally being a POP Disco group, still never contented to be creating Black Music. Just ABAB Music. 5 Starts. And man the Blonde chic is just plain old fashion HOT!!!

That is, mostly hetero men, w ridiculous macho attitude, pretending 2b hard while playing embarrasingly soft music, like KISS.

@apataye Haha I don't think KISS would like you calling them Faggot Rock, but that's just their problem.
Downline is: both bands are pretty shitty.

Imagine how much they'd earn for a comeback tour, mindblowing.
