true new srt8's would kill the old 70's .. but the 70 is just awesome.. and the real throaty sound of a 1970 vs a new tingy v8. no comparison. both are cool though
as much as old school muscle rocks. tech has changed alot. even mid level sedans can beat stock super cars of the 70's. only reason old school muscle is so fast now days is because they are exaggerated in movies or on the track they so modded that they are no where near stock...regardless both are great cars, but sorry guys, old muscle cars were called LED SLEDS for a reason.
Actually, the old school big blocks can still hold their own - par only - in straight line performance. Maybe certain small blocks also. But overall you are right - technology has managed to over come the emission control limitations on horsepower and has surpassed the original muscle cars.
@ShityThePirate well, the old one is far easier to modify, and it accelerates way faster than the new one. on the track the old one may be faster but in the ad it only shows street racing. and the old one doesnt have all those computers that control the performance of the car.
@machone7I I have to wonder if anybody ever even looks up or knows the old muscle cars, before they start to piss on new ones. The original 1970 Challenger with a 440 Magnum completed 0-60 sprints within 6.1 seconds if lucky 5.9, the SRT-8 does it in 4.9, the R/T does it in 5.1. In the SRT-8 you can turn off all "driving improvements" if you feel they are really holding you back. Car vs Car, the new one absolutely destroys the old one
@ShityThePirate well, my 09 srt automatic does not accelerate in 4.9 and the computers can be turned off but nott completely. the old one doesnt even have them. and he old one can be easily modified, for example a better carb can give 40 extra hp -not really sure about the exact horsepower since ive ever modified any hemi or magnum v8 but a much more little and slow 61 vw beetle.
@machone7I Then you have one crappy SRT-8, I'd also advise you actually get tires that can grip and deliver the power, I bet if I ask if your spinning a lot when you FLOOR that paddle from a stop, your spinning, right? Imagine how much time your losing. The old one doesn't have one because it's not a MODERN car, if you wanted the king of Challenger's you should have bought the new Drag SRT-8 which weighed 1,000lbs less.
@ShityThePirate well, it doesnt spin tyres and ill advice you its not easy thing to do with that car. and yeah, i knew that a car made in '70 is not modern. anyways flooring the pedal its not the best way of getting a good time and the new challenger does suposedly 4.9 sec 0-60 stock, right like it came from the factory. and changing tyres is not stock.
@machone7I I as able to spin the tires from every stop in the R/T how can you not do it in the SRT-8? LOL. And yes, stock it did get 4.9, some even report 4.8, if your not reaching that...then put your foot down more, also good tires do not cost 3000$. 70 parts are very expensive...they don't exactly make them like they used to anymore. Also, word of advice, invest in a Diablo Predator and tune your computer, your auto will shift faster and you'll feel it.
@ShityThePirate well, if you put the foor down a lot it may slip a bit the tyre, but not spinning. and i dont exactly know how much good tyres cost in there but here in spain they cost about 3000€.
@ShityThePirate also if i bought all the tyres that you say can deliver the power it would cost over 3000 $, and with that money you could do way more with a '70. also you should know that not changing tyres but changing data in the computer, wich limits the power of most actual cars could make the new challenger going up to 500hp is way more cheap and probably more useful.
@ShityThePirate@ShityThePirate also if i bought all the tyres that you say can deliver the power it would cost over 3000 $, and with that money you could do way more with a '70. also you should know that not changing tyres but changing data in the computer, wich limits the power of most actual cars could make the new challenger going up to 500hp is way more cheap and probably more useful.
i am glad they built it and i now i own one ..a two door Hemi car with R / T package options has not been available since 1972 how old where you then?
Although you'll never see it today, the old ones were quiet too when they were stock and new but, everyone has changed the exhaust and cam. The new ones also sound hot with a loud exhaust and are faster too.
agreed. i prefer old school. but if dodge put a V8 440 big block engine, I would definitely buy one. Ive heard the new challenger in person and i could only hear the exhaust & not engine. but other than that its good looking car.
Yes... i figured that out already, but still tnx for response. I would need some pictures of this car in commercial... so if anyone has something i would be gratefull
Ok, the ''new'' Challenger's overall look might be good, but the sound? Nah i don't like it.
Why can't the manufacturers make the ''new'' muscle cars to roar, just like in the 60s and 70s, or offer special package to buy from factory to make it sound better, like special mufflers and some stuff that makes the engine look more like the classic V8s from the 60s, painted in orange e.t.c.
I bet that would be something quite appritiated by the buyers.
I know the other day i was passed by a gt500 and didn't even notice it until my friend said "hey look a Shelby" whats the point of having these cars if they don't scream "HEY LOOK OVER HERE!"
unlike ford, which consistently puts out shitty low power versions of the mustang, most of the challengers out there are gonna be the R/T or SRT8 versions, so their great looks and engine noise (though less mightily ear shattering than in the old school ones) should be enough to get your attention. also its fast.
There are a couple new challengers in my home town, R/T and an SRT8. Both are pretty much silent killers. THey don't scream look at me. They are like a bikini model wearing a parka. You know they're sexy, but they are hiding and no one notices they are there.
they might be, but this is now not 1970 so we must make due with what we have. I think the new challenger is awesome looking. bringing back the old style and looks. It sure beats that new camaro.
The new challenger looks ok, but by no means is it awesome. It is too tall, it looks like a bloated 1971 challenger. The deck lid of the new challenger is level with the top of the bed on my stock 86 ranger.
It looks cartoonish, how large it is.
It weighs too much, a full 300 pounds more than the old challenger,
And the rims are just far too large, they look trashy, I know people are going to give me a thoudand thumbs down. but this is just my opinion, i don't mean to offend you.
ok but hey cmoon... i think this "retro-yank-car" era is better than last few decades? how many original 80's or 90's american muscles you can name by?
no... no...dude can you honestly say that those cars from 80's are cool? just look at 80's or even 90's mustang ?! how uncool is that. ofcourse if someone would give me that rightaway i would take it and drive. but best are 60-70s and why i think these new "retro muscles" look so good is because those look like the originals from 60's-70's
Oh i didn't get what you where saying. I thought you ment they didn't have any muscle cars.
Now I get mocked quite a bit because i like 80's cars. Well some of them. I like the 80's and early 90's camaro's and corvettes, and I like the Grand National. Note they are not my favorite but i still think they look good. The mustang was an epic fail though.
But you are right in that our cars now look a hell of a lot better than the 90's cars. Those sucked it was like everyone could only draw ovals.
okay. :D yes Grand National is actually one of what i also prefer... and you r right, ofcourse there is someone specials for everyone but in generally not good 2 decades for american muscles.
i agree. the 80s and 90s were no good for muscle cars. but while the new ones are all well and good, their dont have that fire in their bellies, the thunder coming out of the exhaust, or the radical styling of the muscle cars from the golden days of 1965-71. this is mostly due to newer regulations, but still, its a pity. although the new cars are better than the last two decades, so who am i to complain?
what you said was completely true and very sensible, and in fact i gave you a thumbs up, because i 100% agree with you, and you actually managed to put into words my complaints about the new one.
but then again, it is better than nothing. and it looks much better in real life than in pictures/videos, although it still has nothing on its predecessor
Wow... Now, if Dodge REALLY wants to put their money where their mouth is, they would produce just as many of these new Challengers as Ford produces Mustangs! If I know anything about Mopar, if it's fast, if it's cool, and if they happen to make it, it will be over-priced and in short supply.
You are 100% correct and I was going to buy one !! I cancelled my order as the dealers are gouging big time ! Only a moron would pay $70,000 for one. I will pursue a 70 Challenger to go with my Dodge Daytona Charger.
You honestly don't get it? The old guy simply remembers when he was a young and how he loved to do the same thing as a kid with his car. It's supposed to be nostalgia. So why doesn't the old guy race the kid? Well he grew up and no longer feels like he has anything to prove (as he and his car are both proven). It's as simple as that...
hes smiling at the energy of "kids these days" and remembering back when he used to do that. hes proved his mettle many times between his cars birth in 1970 and the new car's arrival, hes mellowed out, he no longer feels the need for speed. just that bond between a man and his car.
also correct me if i'm wrong, but the music at the beginning is the same as that at the beginning of the original vanishing point?
I can't believe they used those sorry ass noises instead of the real hemi sounds. Unless its just bad quality from being uploaded, but if it isn't, shame on them for leaving out that one little, yet most important detail!!!
the new Challengers would kick much more ass with the same paint codes as old times and a 440 and 426 hemi option for it. they need stock 08 7.2 litre Challengers. america needs them.
I think that a 1970 Hemi Challenger would bring more than 250K these days. If you buy a new Challenger, beware of dealership gouging. The SRT8 books at $38G. Some dealerships are asking $60. Don't get fucked.
I'd laugh too if some dude in a new challenger came up to my Hemi 70 R/T, I get guys come up in there new dodge chargers next to my 70 R/T Charger, I dont even look over but they think were in some sort of "brotherhood" we are not, although the new challenger is a million times better that the four door charger.
Wow im glad all of us mopar people don't act like you...I have an 07 SRT Charger and a 68 Charger...if a 06 V6 S/E rolls up I wave and give him the thumbs up all the same... We're all mopar bud so ease up
Exactly what I was wondering. Just saw the concept of then new Challenger myself last weekend. I hope the Chrysler Corp takes more cues from their old muscle cars like they did with this.
i'd trade a ferrari for a 1970 challenger any day!

Exactly what I was wondering. Just saw the concept of then new Challenger myself last weekend. I hope the Chrysler Corp takes more cues from their old muscle cars like they did with this.
