As to whether Hitler wanted to damage the US mainland is clear from the wonder weapons towards the end of the war - a variant of the V2 was under development to directly strike America. We don't think of the Germans as nazis anymore - but the effects of that conflict still remain as a reminder of man's inhumanity towards man.

While Hitler wanted to appear to honor his treaty obligations with Japan, his real reason for declaring war on the U.S. so quickly, is he hoped Japan would attack Russia from the east, and similarly, he hope Russia would declare war on Japan, which Russia did not do until August, 1945 - days before Japan surrendered.

Also, there is so much hate on the actual soldiers, even in Hollywood films. They always appear poorly trained and ruthless, when they were the best trained of all WWII Soldiers, and the high majority of them were conscripted! Japan did not hit and run, Pearl Harbour was a false flag operaton to give UK via America an excuse to use their atomic bombs on innocent civilians and they have been doing this ever since. The German navy carried out tests to fire rocket-missiles (invented by the Germans) from a U-boat. The tests proved succesful.
Hitler, however, refused to allow Admiral Doenitz to take this quantum-leap of modern warfare further, instead focussing efforts on the'V' weapons.
For similar reasons, he placed an outright ban on any further 'innovations', andeven ordered that the German jet aircraft were to be used as bombers, not as fighters.

The US near single handily defeated the Japanese Empire in the largest naval engagements in World History. The US bombed Japan into submission and droves them out of the Pacific, depleting their resources and annihilating them. By the end of WWII the US had 4 million troops in ships with 40 aircraft carriers off of the Japanese shore.

Ships were sunk in American waters, and German submarines were capable of launching missiles, albeit they were not used.
America also had a ready-made Nazi Army amongst its population.
