A scene where the noble realizes a harsh lesson: Its the commoners and "dreamers" who build your world, while you dance and prance upon their accomplishments.
"1492: Conquest of Paradise": The OTHER Sigourney Weaver movie about the conquest of native peoples (Taino/Na'vi) by invaders mining a precious substance(gold/unobtanium) XD
SUCK ON THAT SANCHEZZ!!!!! Truly one of the best scenes on film ever. Right up there with Braveheart's FREEDDOOMMM. Love this story, even went to Spain and Santo Domingo in search of it. Thanks for posting it.
this was the classic scene of the movie and then of course Assante has an epiphany and tells the other guy later that if his name is ever remembered, it will only be because of Columbus
Gerard was not the perfect choice for Columbus, but he is intelligent enough to garner just enough sympathy for himself and his character to keep me following his story until the end. The practice duel between him a Assante is also a good sparring scene. I feel sorry for him. He did blaze a light for his part of the world, and they tried to ignore his contribution. I mean, sorry for Columbus the movie character, not the historical figure.
Ah, not his best by my opinion, and yours is respected, belief me. I think Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner surpass this film. Not sure which is his best. However, i have a kinder view of this film now than I did when I first saw it. I was 13 years old when it came out, and I guess looking at the previews, I thought it was going to be another Robin Hood (Costner) period-piece adventure. Foolish and sophmoric.
He says, "...I see steeples..." as in church steeples and such. What I wanna know is what he screams as he's walking towards Columbus. Can never make that out.
I forget, why does Sanchez dislike Columbus? I forget why they are at such great odds with each other in the story. Haven't seen this film in so long.
Almost 3/4 parts of what today is United States belonged to the Crown of Spain, leaving some legacies in North America as the horse, the cattle, the cowboy (vaquero in my language) or the Rodeo, among many more things
Actually it never belonged to them, it belonged to the Native Americans, and they already had horses (the aztecs and mayans didn't). And besides the English were the ones who eventually settled it.
The " sons of Italy " didn't make nothing in the american continent. Those that discovered, and were they the first in to explore, and to colonize all those lands were the spaniards, creating the first global Empire (colonies in all the continents). Our presence in all America lasted more than 300 years, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, in Argentina
Regardless of the fact that Columbus was a colonial instrument that got myriads of innocent Indians murdered for an earthly...Paradise...!? This scene alone...the celestial tune, the humbling dialogue, the fine acting and brilliant directing...offer a combination that is...simply...humanizingly beautiful !!!
Ridley Scott, as said, is a brilliant director... 1492, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven... the man is a genious! Can't wait to see what's his next movie gonna be
He has a film to be completed in 2009 titled Nottingham(probebly working title). I love riddley scott films...the duelest and bladerunner being some of my favorites. One thing is his films seem to be fast paced and his films are so visually rich that it sometimes overshadows the good acting and themes. Bladerunner be a good example.
d2eux don't think your bf is studying the right history when you mention that. The killers were the people brought to NorthAmerica by the British, nazies, you did exterminio of the indians.
Colon was one of the greatest men of the history. Did you know Spain controlled the most of the US today from 1519 to 1821? (New Spain) Get the right books
dont tell me I know that already. In fact, I just came upon a very interesting source by the Order Sons of Italy in America - Commission for Social Justice. debunking any slander he received from like minded historians. they extracted 15 primary and secondary sources to back up their claims. Im so glad i got this on DVD
Absolutely amazing film and one of my favourite scenes from it. It's about time Ridley Scott prepared a special edition DVD version of this film. Enthralling, moving and majestic.
The movie was ok but it doesnt tell us about the truth!!It portays Colombus as a Murder, but as in fact he was a navigator comamder of the seas, not Land that was left to the Spanish Lords,Generals, and so on...The Spanish Crown was in fact the Murders in the whole discovery bit not Columbus thats why he got sent back to Spain the First time.Cause he didnt like what was goin on in the name of the cross.
Wonderful. Since the movie came out around 1992,I've been a fan of this movie and like others here I cannot understand why it is slammed so much. I think the slamming has probably to do with short attention spans and a lack of interest in 'real' history telling in movies. People like movies such as 300. Slash and swords, loosely based on history. Rather than something like 1492. A thinking mans/womans movie, we could say.
he was like people from his time were (which includes slavemonger and racist). the film does show the slaughter and suffering brought to the natives by the conquest though.
exactly and everyone ive mentioned this movie to has never heard of it. its recognition is almost nonexistent. i cant even find its original theatrical trailer, but i can find trailers online to movies 20 years older
thanks for your comment. this is one of the most inspiring movies i have ever seen. it signs the true soul of human progress in personality of a very important hystorical character. and as you say it is underrated ironically like the people who bring real progress...

And thus all dreamers share one dream of things to come.

Columbus: All of them built by people like me.
[Sanchez doesn't respond - shocked]
Columbus: No matter how long you live, Sanchez, there is something that will never change between us. I did it. You didn't.
SpaceMonkey1983 2 years ago 4
For those who can barely hear/understand what's being said here:
Sanchez: [Columbus stops Sanchez after he leaves an audience with the Queen. Sanchez looks at him, disgusted] You're a dreamer.
Columbus: [shooting a glance out of a window] Tell me, what do you see?
Sanchez: [pausing to look] I see rooftops, I see palaces, I see towers, I see spires that reach... to the sky! I see civilisation!

universalis 7 - good pick! You captured one of the most important dialogues of the film!
1492, in my opinion, was a masterpiece, with breathtaking cinematography, brilliant enchanting music by Vangelis, good acting and powerful dialogues.

The 1492 film is pretty mediocre but the music from mr Vangelis is lifting the movie to a higher level.
It´s a f-----g joke that Vangelis did not win the Music Academy Award for this film.
If you havent got the cd-soundtrack for "1492" then go buy it....
