I pretty much dislike all HIGH GAIN models of any amp company! They Take an amp that sounds fierce and huge, andd start messing too much with them. I love hiwatt dont get me wrong, but this is what happens when you mess too much. It sounds thin, like nothing but high end, for some music that may be perfect, but I believee in a good solid AMP and then a good pedal to boost the amp into, if you will, metal territory!
Actually a lot of guitarists record with smaller amps, and have the big amps for live preformances. not just Townshend and Page. And basically because you CANT get a good recording with 100 watts of tube power and eight 12 inch speakers. a good 15 watts and two, or even one 12 inch speaker is just about right. sometimes more can be used. I'd say 50 watts of tube at the Max. But thats just from what I've observed.
@GuitarFang I played a custom 50 (head) at my local guitar center a few months back, that thing was louder than all hell at maybe Vol:2!! ITS RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!
@fenix478 I Used to think I understood what CRUNCH was, then I played a Custom 30 combo (yeah 30, never saw one before till I played it) and cranked the vol, and raised the master on it, and it seriously redefined CRUNCH for me, I used to think I could get crunchy tones, I WAS FUCKING WRONG! thick and growld so fucking much!!!!!! sabbath blooody sabbath tone PERFECTLY!!!
did anyone know that jimmy page used hiwatt amps a lot and he used one for the solo for stairway to heaven in the studio he prefered the sound of them in the studio but used marshall and orange amps live also pete townshend used them a lot and best example of him using one is the who at the isle of wight i mean for that one concert he blew hendrix off the stage
Page mainly used really small tube amps in the studio because it was easier to get a cranked overdriven tone out of them compared to a marshall or hiwatt. I am no Page expert but I don't think he ever recorded with a big Hiwatt in the studio. Too much headroom and not enough gain.
@rooockme I don't think "better" is what you're asking for. The Custom series doesn't have much gain until you turn it all the way up - it's mostly a clean amp. You use that for your clean and get distortion with effects pedals. However, the Hi-Gain 100 will give you distortion at lower levels, as well as the Custom clean sound.
@slysendice I have actually cranked the vol (bright or normal, depending on which channel im using) and then slowly raised the master and that was all the gain i needed!!! I dont believee that GAIN is the key to a HEAVY or metal sound, if the tone is dark and heavy and mean, then you got it!!!!as lons as its not too clean, almost any dirty tone is dirty enough for me!!! BLACK SABBATH FOR DAYS!!!!
Another music store that CAN"T MIC UP AN AMP. Useless video. What's the matter, couldn't find a 57 and a small mixer in yer super high end store? Guess where I'm not shopping? Put some thought into this shit before you post.
the original were made by jim marshall pete townsen started it when he ask jim to build him a amp in the early 60s. go watch the tour of marsall factroy and jims son tells it all.
"Clean Channel (CH 1) is the EXACT CIRCUITRY as used in our Custom amplifiers."
Now that's taken care of, I have a UK-made Hiwatt Hi Gain 50 2x12 combo (tons of Pink Floyd cover on my channel) and I've played with it side by side with Marshalls, 70s Fender Twins, Super Reverbs, and even a H&K TriAmp. Nothing compares to the clean channel -- Classic warm, ringing and shimmering tone with sticky fat overdrive when you boost it.
Dear God... the dirty tone is blasphemous to everything that is a HIWATT dirty tone.
It sounds like an Peavey Rage 6" combo for Christs sake.....
I've owned numorous early 70's 4 holer 50's and 100's and althoughthe clean tone is easier to fake, the dirty channel reveals these amps to be $2G+ pieces of shit.
@klyniss not necessarily. the clean tone sounds great, and if you turn up the power and lower the preamp, it sounds quite nice. but yes it is very overpriced.
face it , the one who should make the homework is LAMusicCustomGuitars , if this noise truly because the pickups for being within inches from the amp and not because the amp then make a proper video showing a big distance from it ,then lets hear the sound at hi-gain
They should issue a license before people can make comments!
Hey dipwads, the "buzz" or "hum" is coming from the guitar being within inches of the amp on hi-gain. Yeah, those are humbucking pickups, but at hi-gain settings, you can very easily hear 60Hz hum...and you can tell I'm correct because as he moves and turns, the hum changes amplitude.
Do your homework before making uninformed statements!
That is actually a pretty good amp. Just not set up very well. But like Mr. Peter said. In the right hands these are some of the best heads. Maybe the demo guy just was a bit new to this head.
i meant when you get to 1:08 he says to the dirty now , u hear the buzz sound from the amp and that is really unprofessional from Hiwatt , the clean channel is good but the drive one is not ok . if only they didnt use a dirty channel and kept the clean but adding to it all the modern features , loop , xlr out , foot switch , with normal price then we could all have a benefit from such custom 100 with new features and less price , but they failed to do so
but if u talkin bout the noise u r hearin it s all about the shitty camera mic they used to record the demo, one of my mate has one of these heads n there s no noise at all, this is a super pro head

First and foremost:
From Hiwatt's website about the Hi-Gain series:
"Clean Channel (CH 1) is the EXACT CIRCUITRY as used in our Custom amplifiers."
Now that's taken care of, I have a UK-made Hiwatt Hi Gain 50 2x12 combo (tons of Pink Floyd cover on my channel) and I've played with it side by side with Marshalls, 70s Fender Twins, Super Reverbs, and even a H&K TriAmp. Nothing compares to the clean channel -- Classic warm, ringing and shimmering tone with sticky fat overdrive when you boost it.

overpriced but perfect for a crunchy blues/alt rock setup.
gwilym94 1 year ago
I would suggest it is the amp setup and a cheap rubbish microphone used on the video cam that captured that awful overdrive noise.
