Feel free to research the allegations made by the American Humane Society that over 20 kittens were killed in the making of this film.

This was the 1980's, there were no CG special effects. A scene with a falling cat = a cat was thrown off a cliff. Sorry to burst a nostalgic bubble. I loved these movies too.

@just1slide actually know, the humane society was there watching, the only reason they had to replace the cat is because it got too old for the age the movie portrayed, took 5 years to film cuz the cats were growing up too fast, not cuz they were killed

Clearly, that pug loved struggling to hold its head above moving water and getting slapped at. I'm also sure the cat, with its ears pinned back, really enjoyed rafting down a river in a small box. All those seemingly-obvious moments of animal stress must be the result of their excellent theatrical skills.

I'm a filmmaker, so I know a few things about how movies operate. You, apparently, don't know how animals operate.

The American Humane Society approved the film with zero of their officers present during the filming. Most people are satisfied with a "No animals were harmed" sticker at the end of the credits, but that doesn't make it true. You must not understand animals very well if you think throwing a short-nosed dog into a river with a bear slapping at it is not cruel. This movie is fucked.

This is one of my favorite childhood movies but I feel really bad for Otis when he put in the river near the bear. I mean for a pug that's gotta b really stressful because they have a short nose and all that water, on top of havin to b near a big bear, that puppy playin the role was probably incredibly scared and very nervous. In fact, the tree it's perched on looks like one of those "skeleton trees" from the Deadwood Swamp itself. This occurs around 7:30 to 7:45 in this part.

The kitten with the hurt paw looks as if his paw is broken. Really sucks thinking about it now that I'm older, I used to love this movie.
