@jenzie7 I know, right?! but after reviewing the videw a few times, i think it can only be locked from the inside, judging by the fact they couldn't open the door to save him.

Remember, he thought Claire would be saved if he died, and Desmond had stopped seeing the flashes so he thought it was his destiny. In any case, the door could only be locked from the inside, and he knew Desmond would go to any length to see Penny.

Charlie was my favourite character in Lost... i was crying for one week for his death... omg... he was so brave and the only character that had something so special... wow... and this damn song in the end... charkie was one of the reasons i didn' twant to miss any episode of Lost...

@AliceCullen180 because Desmond had seen the future and told him that he was going to die very soon and his death was the only way he would have been able to get Claire and Aaron off the island because he promised her that he would.

also, from rewatching this whole episode, they had found DIVING GEAR, they would have had plenty of time to put it on before the whole hatch was flooded. Oh, well, I guess he figured he' d have to die to be sure Claire would get off the island, but this is my favorite scene in the show (saddest) except for the final scene w/Jack. BEST SHOW EVER

if he died but it wouldn't of fill the whole thing up. It would of fill it have way so he could breath, it was a mistake that the writer will always have on their backs lolz

The room wouldn't fill up with water, it would stop once the porthole was covered, leaving an air pocket above. If Desmond stepped away from the door, Charlie could have opened it (since it opens outwards) and probably sustain only minor injuries as he washes into the main room. They would have plenty of time to escape before that big main room flooded. Worst death scene.

@twilightrox166 Well I think the reason they killed him off is because when he got the transmission from Penny and then saw the grenade he knew Desmond wouldn't try to run but Charlie needed Desmond to be able to get away to be able to tell the rest of the Losties about what happened, so he sacrificed himself.

Charlie was a useless fool with the will power of a wet noodle. Not too smart either. I am curious. Why would anyone miss this character? He didn't bring much to the show apart from his neediness.

The writers never wanted to kill off Charlie. Dominic Monaghan asked to be written off. His choice and they respected it, but apparently he's coming back.
