Those just arent paradiddles, those are full fledged rolls and what mightto be dotted 8ith notes, millions of them. I always wondered what a drummer thinks about while hes soloing, is he improvising? or is it all pre-anticipated. or just counting numbers in the head,?
@truebones Buddy never played the same solo twice, nor did he play any song exactly the same either.
There's about 20 million drummer throughout time that would give up a body part to know exactly what was going on in that genius' head.
When I solo, sometimes i hear a song melody in my head and play to that. (on a few recordings i've heard buddy humming (very quietly) while do a solo. Sometimes I'm just listening to what I'm playing and seeing where it takes me.
@wyzyrddrummer Some people like Phil Collins memorize solos for concerts. I remember hearing Genesis rehearse back in the early 90's in Houston at the vacated Good Year Blimp hanger a bunch of times for their upcoming concert. Collins and Chester did duet solos and they played the same thing at each practice.
There has never been a drummer like Buddy before or since, and likely there never will be again. Unless Buddy comes back as somebody else. That's the only possibility to me.
Lucy I'm home! LOL! When I was a kid living in California I saw him perform live many times at Disneyland. He was the greatest inspiration. We still love you Buddy. Check out my tributes to him on here (a few short drum solos of mine). To all the rock drummers out there, don’t lose touch with the past. There are many things to learn from the rich heritage all those jazz drummers left us “back in the day”. Richard Gray

@fcweddington That's the way the drummers from that era had the drums setup.if you checkout the old, sorry 'older' guys from the 20ies & 30ies you'll see the snare setup is even more angled. When you think about it ,it is a natural angle for the orthodox grip used.
Playing rim shots on a snare drum does not marks of any king on the drum itself. The metal of the rims is much harder than the wood of the drum stick, and the drum head is made of Dupont mylar and does not wear out any faster playing rim shots as opposed to not playing rim shots. The drum head could literally last for years before needing to be replaced.
well its just a triplet between the bass and hands, but in the context he's playing it sounds like a one hand roll, along with the accents placed it sounds like it gets faster. Very clever.
Part of what's a trip here is that he's doing it on what sounds like a tightly tuned snare ... making the accomplishment all the more commendable - whatever the accomplishment!
@mikebuddy NO SUCH THNG?? PFF THEN WHAT IS BUDDY RICH DOIN AT 0:38 WITH HIS LEFT HAND? ITS THE MOST AMAZING ONE HAND ROLL I EVER SEEN NOT EVEN JO JO MAYER CAN DO THAT WITH THE RIGHT HAND...
There is no such thing as a 1 handed roll per se. What he is doing at :37 is playing the 2nd and 3rd notes of sixteenth note triplets giving the ILLUSION of a 1 handed roll. By your definition, 2 or more notes played with 1 hand in succession would qualify as a "1 handed roll".
Notice how much attention is drawn in by Buddy Rich at the begining of the video and how the audience turns away after he finishes. Just shows that he was the main attraction and that people just wanted to watch him. lol he's just amazing
he did draw a breath but the face he made was for his imperfect execution of the last thing he played prior to that..seen do similar on carson AND in person.
Good to see the smaller ,basic sets are back in fashion . I never liked the giant, monster kits. They were a big joke and a bore to watch. Find the drummer.
@todbeck aaaa yea, there are drummers that are extremely talented today. not everyone that plays drums has to be a jazz or bigband or swing drummer, ok?
Yea,i have most of that show, just did'nt get around to it yet.Although i would hardly call it a Lesson(its a bit like that video of buddy showing how to play h.hats with left hand underneath, very funny)
I'd need to half speed this video to be certain (or as close as I can get), but :38 to :40 sounds like sixteenth notes at 210 beats per minute -- all in his left hand. Incredible.
there are compound strokes in that left hand roll. it's a waste of time trying to count in to it in terms of "per minute" since he only plays the thing for a couple of seconds.
I don't think it's difficult at all, compound strokes or not. It's easiest at half speed, of course. If anyone can send me a Windows Media file, I can re-post it at half speed and you can see for yourself how many notes per second he's playing there. They'r either eighth note triplets or sixteenth notes at around 210 bpm, in my opinion.
we have been over and over this on the buddy forum, remember? you can't be accurate when using 40 year old analog video there is too much room for error not to mention flv file remnants/artifacts in other words blurr.
That's not necessarily the case. Many of the videos are extremely clear and make it very easy to count the notes per second at half speed. Also, if you can catch the tempo (BPM, which isn't usually hard to do), you can easily calculate how fast quarters, eighths, eighth triplets, sixteenths, etc. are even without half speed. ETs at 210 clock in at 10.5 notes per second, for instance.
when converting to vhs from the master there is a "stop frame" about every 20th frame I have seen evidence of it time and again. the kinoscopes do it about every 12th frame ever notice the blurr on the the away we go shows? that is because there is a stop frame which occurs during conversion. but thew away we go show stuff is the most obvious..continued
however ALL analog tape does this during the conversion process. now convert THAT junk to flv file [youtube]then stick it back on a windows player and you can begin to see how inaccurate all of this "counting in" actually is
I haven't had trouble with it on most videos, as I said. The notes match up fine. Quarters are quarters, eighths are eighths, sixteenths ... etc. There is no "doubling" or anything. Check out my half speed videos and see for yourself.
one i would love to see again is 'One Night Stand'with host m.torme & l.hampton, where buddy appears at the end of the show with M.lewis,Torme, hamp,& rich.have'nt seen it anywhere?

I believe it makes it easier to do rim shots.
dahur 1 year ago
@fcweddington you need to look up Alex "Grind" Pelletier. he plays like that..
Bradyman55 1 year ago
@fcweddington its because of the grip he used. he used traditional grip which back then, and still many drum corps today, have tilted snares for.
benjewboynett 1 year ago
@fcweddington Its just a more convienient angle to have it at when playing traditional grip. You get use to it after a while.

Though he's not doing it here. There are 2 ways to do a 1 handed roll; w/ the rim ala Johnny Rabb (whjich is kinda lame) or Push/Pull.
He plays 3 then 2 w/ the hand @:37.
