  • Those just arent paradiddles, those are full fledged rolls and what mightto be dotted 8ith notes, millions of them. I always wondered what a drummer thinks about while hes soloing, is he improvising? or is it all pre-anticipated. or just counting numbers in the head,?

  • @truebones Buddy never played the same solo twice, nor did he play any song exactly the same either.

There's about 20 million drummer throughout time that would give up a body part to know exactly what was going on in that genius' head.

When I solo, sometimes i hear a song melody in my head and play to that. (on a few recordings i've heard buddy humming (very quietly) while do a solo. Sometimes I'm just listening to what I'm playing and seeing where it takes me.

  • @wyzyrddrummer Some people like Phil Collins memorize solos for concerts. I remember hearing Genesis rehearse back in the early 90's in Houston at the vacated Good Year Blimp hanger a bunch of times for their upcoming concert. Collins and Chester did duet solos and they played the same thing at each practice.

  • To me One of the best drummers ever.

  • How much does it suck to be that other guy.

  • dude im so hard

  • Thumbs up if you think he looks like Dr. Spock :D

  • Wow, no offense to buddy rich is one of my favorites, but doesn't he kinda look like he's wearing one of those goofy obama masks in this clip ?

  • Simply the greatest ever! His snare work alone is mind boggling.

  • Go Buddy wipe out those Slingerlands'

  • You can convert this or any youtube video to an mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • There has never been a drummer like Buddy before or since, and likely there never will be again. Unless Buddy comes back as somebody else. That's the only possibility to me.

  • Lucy I'm home! LOL! When I was a kid living in California I saw him perform live many times at Disneyland. He was the greatest inspiration. We still love you Buddy. Check out my tributes to him on here (a few short drum solos of mine). To all the rock drummers out there, don’t lose touch with the past. There are many things to learn from the rich heritage all those jazz drummers left us “back in the day”. Richard Gray

  • Absolutely amazing. There are no other words.

  • Where can I see the full episode?

  • greatest drummer ever...period!

  • The perfect application of Moeller technique. Period.

  • That would suck to be the guy who has to spin back around and play after that hahah

  • I've never seen anyone play with the snare hung like that.

  • @fcweddington That's the way the drummers from that era had the drums setup.if you checkout the old, sorry 'older' guys from the 20ies & 30ies you'll see the snare setup is even more angled. When you think about it ,it is a natural angle for the orthodox grip used.

  • Goes back to the military marching drums who wore their drums and had them set at an angle.

  • @fcweddington

I believe it makes it easier to do rim shots.

  • @fcweddington you need to look up Alex "Grind" Pelletier. he plays like that..

  • @fcweddington its because of the grip he used. he used traditional grip which back then, and still many drum corps today, have tilted snares for.

  • @fcweddington Its just a more convienient angle to have it at when playing traditional grip. You get use to it after a while.

  • Do you have the rest of this episode, especially the part where Buddy jams with Desi Jr.?

  • @swami1 yes,but i don't have it up.I have seen it on youtube somewhere though.

  • @mikebuddy1 PLEASE put it up. I've searched all over for that section and can't find it.

  • @mikebuddy1 Can't find it anywhere. If you have it please post it.

  • hahaha gotta feel for the drummer that pops up just behind buddy. More than likely feels complelty useless

  • buddy is for sure a god of drums

  • I can only imagine how beat up his snare is from all the rim shots it takes

  • Playing rim shots on a snare drum does not marks of any king on the drum itself. The metal of the rims is much harder than the wood of the drum stick, and the drum head is made of Dupont mylar and does not wear out any faster playing rim shots as opposed to not playing rim shots. The drum head could literally last for years before needing to be replaced.

  • Just another brilliant performance by BR. Lighthearted, but brilliant nonetheless.

  • 0:37 one hand roll and bass!

  • no such thing

  • well its just a triplet between the bass and hands, but in the context he's playing it sounds like a one hand roll, along with the accents placed it sounds like it gets faster. Very clever.

  • Though he's not doing it here. There are 2 ways to do a 1 handed roll; w/ the rim ala Johnny Rabb (whjich is kinda lame) or Push/Pull.

    He plays 3 then 2 w/ the hand @:37.

  • Part of what's a trip here is that he's doing it on what sounds like a tightly tuned snare ... making the accomplishment all the more commendable - whatever the accomplishment!

    The best!

  • @mikebuddy NO SUCH THNG?? PFF THEN WHAT IS BUDDY RICH DOIN AT 0:38 WITH HIS LEFT HAND? ITS THE MOST AMAZING ONE HAND ROLL I EVER SEEN NOT EVEN JO JO MAYER CAN DO THAT WITH THE RIGHT HAND...

  • There is no such thing as a 1 handed roll per se. What he is doing at :37 is playing the 2nd and 3rd notes of sixteenth note triplets giving the ILLUSION of a 1 handed roll. By your definition, 2 or more notes played with 1 hand in succession would qualify as a "1 handed roll".

  • @reddieseled Frickin' mind blowing, isn't it???

  • Buddy Rich--still the best. His timing never waivers, no matter what he is doing.

  • No brain. Don't let your mind wander -- it's too little to be let out alone.

  • Them hands are GOLDEN!

  • Would love to see entire episode I remember watching it with my dad at a young age. Would like to see entire episode. Thanks

  • i would for sure. i saw part of it when i was a kid.

  • THERE WILL ONLY EVER BE ONE BUDDY !

  • You've GOT to post the rest of the episode. Buddy trades fills with Desi, Jr.

  • git git git giddyup!!!!!!!!

  • Notice how much attention is drawn in by Buddy Rich at the begining of the video and how the audience turns away after he finishes. Just shows that he was the main attraction and that people just wanted to watch him. lol he's just amazing

  • This is a nice rare clip!

    Go Buddy GO!!

  • jajaj he look's like chespirito ajaja

  • 0:40-0:45 Heh... Watch it like 50-60 times...

And gotta love the deep breath he takes before he launches that ridiculous single stroke barrage at the end...

  • he did draw a breath but the face he made was for his imperfect execution of the last thing he played prior to that..seen do similar on carson AND in person.

  • you gotta be kidding me. travis barker is not that good, i don't know why anyone says he is

  • your kidding me right ?

  • You can't even spell amazing right you drum expert! What the hell is meh?

  • He's AWESOME!

  • lol gotta feel for the drummer who comes up behind buddy ...bet he's feeling way way inadaquete lol

  • Good to see the smaller ,basic sets are back in fashion . I never liked the giant, monster kits. They were a big joke and a bore to watch. Find the drummer.

  • From a drummer who HAS a smaller,basic kit(Slingerland classic), I heartily agree.

  • dittio

  • @todbeck less is more!

  • hes sick!!

  • I wish I could find the whole Here's Lucy episode. I remember it from when I was young.

  • If only todays bashing, thrashing ,untidy drummers, would learn from Buddy, and Gene Krupa , instead of playing the crap they play.

  • Yes, no doubt!

  • @todbeck aaaa yea, there are drummers that are extremely talented today. not everyone that plays drums has to be a jazz or bigband or swing drummer, ok?

  • @todbeck The best drummers today are twice what Buddy ever was.

  • He never ceases to amaze. Always makes his playing exciting.

  • spectacular! thanks for the video!

  • awesome, who's the other drummer?

  • Dick Cully. xD

  • Great camera angle at 0:55!. Great man!

  • That is amazing!

  • hey! was that other drummer dick cully?

    [I couldn't resist]

  • can u put up the whole show ? its only 23 min.

  • Mikebuddy1: Do you have a WMV file of this you can send to me? Thanks.

  • i copied this clip from vhs tape i think the clip is about 100mbs(big file)your best bet is to download the file from youtube(realplayer)

  • Did you find the drum lesson from that show ???

  • Yea,i have most of that show, just did'nt get around to it yet.Although i would hardly call it a Lesson(its a bit like that video of buddy showing how to play h.hats with left hand underneath, very funny)

i will try to get around to it this week.

ps. just got my copy of TIME OUT cd.

  • Thanks for posting. I've been looking for this video for YEARS! PLEASE post more from the episode if you have it.

  • I'd need to half speed this video to be certain (or as close as I can get), but :38 to :40 sounds like sixteenth notes at 210 beats per minute -- all in his left hand. Incredible.

  • Either that or eighth note triplets. Either way, that's unbelievably fast.

  • Anyone have any thoughts on this? Mikebuddy -- am I close, do you think?

  • no not close at all, especially if you think it's all in the left hand.

  • What's your count, ishredu?

  • > especially if you think it's all in the left hand.

His left hand is the only hand playing the snare during this passage, so I'm confused by your response.

  • there are compound strokes in that left hand roll. it's a waste of time trying to count in to it in terms of "per minute" since he only plays the thing for a couple of seconds.

    that's all I meant.

  • I don't think it's difficult at all, compound strokes or not. It's easiest at half speed, of course. If anyone can send me a Windows Media file, I can re-post it at half speed and you can see for yourself how many notes per second he's playing there. They'r either eighth note triplets or sixteenth notes at around 210 bpm, in my opinion.

  • we have been over and over this on the buddy forum, remember? you can't be accurate when using 40 year old analog video there is too much room for error not to mention flv file remnants/artifacts in other words blurr.

  • That's not necessarily the case. Many of the videos are extremely clear and make it very easy to count the notes per second at half speed. Also, if you can catch the tempo (BPM, which isn't usually hard to do), you can easily calculate how fast quarters, eighths, eighth triplets, sixteenths, etc. are even without half speed. ETs at 210 clock in at 10.5 notes per second, for instance.

  • when converting to vhs from the master there is a "stop frame" about every 20th frame I have seen evidence of it time and again. the kinoscopes do it about every 12th frame ever notice the blurr on the the away we go shows? that is because there is a stop frame which occurs during conversion. but thew away we go show stuff is the most obvious..continued

  • The videos I focus on aren't the "Away We Go" type shows, but the concert videos available on DVD. The clarity on those are usually great.

  • however ALL analog tape does this during the conversion process. now convert THAT junk to flv file [youtube]then stick it back on a windows player and you can begin to see how inaccurate all of this "counting in" actually is

  • I haven't had trouble with it on most videos, as I said. The notes match up fine. Quarters are quarters, eighths are eighths, sixteenths ... etc. There is no "doubling" or anything. Check out my half speed videos and see for yourself.

  • Where is the drumm lesson with Buddy and Craig ?

  • Thanks for this clip ! Please post the drum lesson/battle Buddy Gives on this clip.

  • No sorry, did'nt even know he appeared on Happy days.

  • there was a show called "happy days" but it's not the one with the fonze, it's a different show altogether and yes buddy did play on that show.

  • Ah ok,

never seen it (or heard of it)

one i would love to see again is 'One Night Stand'with host m.torme & l.hampton, where buddy appears at the end of the show with M.lewis,Torme, hamp,& rich.have'nt seen it anywhere?

  • How about the drum battle with Buddy and Ricky??

  • OK i'll put it up sometime next week(you mean Craig, yes)

  • I've never seen this one before. Interesting short solo, thanks for posting. Have you got Buddy's appearances on Happy Days?
