Who'd do battle against another country these days? You can just let them do battle against themselves. We've been doing it to the Belgians for ages and it's showing serious results.
About the army joke: to Americans every army is small. Half of every dollar, pound, Euro, yen or whatever that goes to the defence of any country goes to the defence of the USA.
Just to put things better into perspective: the Dutch army, navy and air force together have the second most international operations each year per head of the population, the USA is #1 of course.

Yeah, you are right. It's just that compared to the American army the Dutch army looks small. This is because if you are used to living in America other countries look small, as America is so much larger. . . If that sounded arrogant, I apologize. I just don't know how else to say it. I would never insult other countries, including the Netherlands (Holland). I myself am half Dutch.
