  • Everyone on the count of three! Everyone on the count of three! All together now!!!!! Look so goofy when I get into that part in my car, ha! But I don't care.

  • I love the lyrics so much.

  • didn't really like the album when it came out in february but fell in love with it by april. conor, i adore you

  • this is an awesome album and is the most real lyrically yet. reflection of torment in the world, not just just personally. its the evolution of a soul

  • The opening lines reference some of his previous album covers: Fireworks (Letting Off the Happiness), Vanity (Fevers and Mirrors), Circuit Board (Digital Ash in a Digital Urn), the City Streets (I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning), and Shooting Star / Palm Tree (Cassadaga). Oberst does not reference Lifted because in one song on the album, he sings, "I do not read the reviews, no I am not singing for you." Here, though, he sings of leaving his other works open to judgement ("the arbiter's feet").

  • @ScreamingInTheCalle wow nice observation... totally missed that!

  • @ScreamingInTheCalle very interesting good input

  • @ScreamingInTheCalle did you copy paste that off somewhere? lol. and no the reason he doesn't mention lifted is because there is no easy way to explain the cover of it. don't think too much into it. he doesn't mention collection of songs either.

  • @KazakageoftheSand I did read that somewhere (not long after the album was released) but no, there was no copying and pasting involved. I simply recalled what I had read previously. The part explaining why Lifted is not mentioned, however, is completely original to me (as far as I know). On that album, specifically on the track "Let's Not Shit Ourselves," he does make it quite clear that his music is not meant for anyone but himself -- certainly not for any judge -- so I stand behind my theory.

  • @KazakageoftheSand My reasoning for why his collection of songs are not mentioned is that they are simply just that: a bunch of random songs. Consciously deciding to make an album, however, requires that you focus all your energies to create this really grand thing (the album itself). For this reason, albums are on a higher plane (in terms of importance and prominence) than simple collections of songs -- and why they are overlooked in the song.

  • @KazakageoftheSand That is my thinking anyway. You ideas are just as valid and I could just be over-thinking the entire thing. Anyway, enjoy the song. It is a great one.

  • "my private life is an inside joke, no one will explain it to me"

  • Conors' voice + This beat = Perfect

  • @thetokeinalien Agreed

  • This is why I'd rather be blind than Deaf.

  • @repotcard3 So you couldn't read my reply to your post? ??

  • @addelinexD Oh he will one day im sure of it but Sadly when it happens he might be gone; everyone takes his beautiful music for granted.

  • "my private life's an inside joke, no one will explain it to me. " oh hell yes.

  • this song just broke my heart. here it come, that heavy love.

  • They were beautiful live. Simply beautiful.

  • 12 people cant hear

  • Westfair Amphitheatre. See the best of you tomorrow.

  • 700th like :)

  • Totally saw this song live last night. Whaaaat?

  • @Abbytater

you from denver? if so, i know what you mean.

  • @thetokeinalien Nope, Canada.

  • @Abbytater

well. crap maybe it was like a month ago. not three weeks, that i saw him atleast.

  • @thetokeinalien Nope, Canada. Did you see Death Cab too?

  • @Abbytater

no. i thought it was weird he was playing with death cab. because he has sooooo much more talent then the whole band of DCFC.

like they have one song i like maybe? and i like everything bright eyes has ever produced. i have every cd ever made, so that self explanatory. and death cab is more mainstream and shit. i dunno.

  • @thetokeinalien WHAT???! Death Cab For Cutie is my favourite band in the entire world. And they ARE talented. I don't like Bright Eyes all that much, but I still concede that they're talented. You should do the same. Also, Death Cab may be "mainstream" now (by indie standards), but there are two things here: 1) 'Mainstream' doesn't necessarily mean bad and 2) They clawed their way out of obscurity because they're talented. Anyway, I enjoyed Bright Eyes but I was only at that concert to see DCFC.

  • @Abbytater

sorry, i didnt mean to offend.

    its just my personal opinion.

and i dont judge bands by if they are mainstream or not. i just like good music, and its just that i think conor has a more complex perspective on everything and has a very poetic way of saying it. maybe its because bright eyes is my favorite band ever made.

  • @thetokeinalien Haha, fair enough. I think Bright Eyes are pretty talented, and enjoyed seeing them live. They're just not really my cup of tea. But you have to understand, I'm a raging DCFC fangirl, so I react violently to these types of things. No hard feelings.

  • @Abbytater

dude, i am the same with bright eyes. its all good.

  • @thetokeinalien Well, like I said, Conor Oberst is a talented dude. As are Mike Mogis, Nate Walcott and his backing band. They were good.

  • @Abbytater i have every cd he has ever made. and i have been listening to it for a little less them my whole life. because it saved my life by giving me hope and helping realize the beauty of things when i couldn't see it. so excuse me for my prejudice-ness. i understand we all have a taste for something and it might not be the same as others. but thats cool.

  • @Abbytater

correction, a little less then half of my whole life. especially with those shitty teenage years.

  • At first I thought this song was about Mario Kart...

  • @myhohnerlovesme best comment ever

  • @myhohnerlovesme

just out of curiousity, how does it remind you of mario kart?

  • @thetokeinalien Just because mario kart is heavily based on the idea of the shells. "Took the fireworks and the vanity

The circuit board and the city streets

    Shooting star, swaying palm tree"

Sounds like he is describing rainbow road and other levels...

  • @myhohnerlovesme

oh yeah i see what you are saying. i would have never thought of that or related it to that. hahaa.

  • @myhohnerlovesme no no not at all. he is describing his album covers fireworks (the peoples key) vanity (fevers and mirrors) circuit board (digital ash in a digital urn) city streets (Im wide awake, its morning) shooting stars and palm trees (cassadega). the next lyrics are " and the next lyrics are and lay it at the arbiters feet. an arbiter is someone who judges, so hes saying hes taking all of his past works and putting them up for judgement. CONNOR MAY BE JESUS, MOHAMMED OR WHOEVER <3

  • @bthor03 actuaully the fireworks are letting off happiness and the arbiter is the peoples key. Also, Conor is god. That is all.lol.

  • I just saw on Conor's wikipedia page:

"Conor Mullen Oberst is pretty much the most beautiful man on the face of this planet. No other men can compete." I bet no one has the balls to edit that away. :P

  • for all the critics dissing this albulm and conor, if you haven't heard, he does not read the reviews, no, he is not singing for you

  • @mategan5692 i actually thought the same thing, but i was watching the listening party for this album and he has a review framed and on his mantel. Whatsup with that?

  • @mategan5692 Hahaha pro.

  • @mategan5692 I think that whenever I see a bad Bright Eyes review xD

  • @mategan5692 wait, people didn't like this album? It was amazing.

  • @mategan5692 BLAAAAAAAHHHHHGGGGGGGGGG

That song is my favoritest noise of all time.

  • so retro

  • Reminds me of "true blue"

  • My private life, theres an inside joke

and no one will explain it to me

  • Definitely this album's Land Locked Blues

  • SEEING HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, IN 6 HOURS OH MY GOD. <3333333333 SO EXCITED.

  • @PULCHRITUDINOUS that show was amazing. that set was over 2 hours it was incredible.

  • @fendertelesk8r oh my god, it was amazing. people were dancing and stuff and i literally stood there like :O the whole time. i couldn't dance or sing or anything i was just like omg, because ive listened to him since middle school and never seen him. he's amazing, it was so unreal.

  • @PULCHRITUDINOUS ya people were getting pretty crazy haha i first heard of them abou 3 years ago and just fell in love with their music style and i loved how they played take it easy (love nothing) thats a great song haha and cartoon blues. the setlist made me very happy :)

  • It's funny that my life seems to have coincided with the tone of his albums, as far as the periods of self-destructive introspection budding into a sense of perserverance and rationalization that whatever challenges remain can be faced with an almost whimsical freedeom that comes with a calloused perspective.

  • i saw them at sxsw (FOR FREE!) a few weeks ago, and while i was so happy to see them, it was kind of bitter sweet 'cause it was the end of bright eyes. i literally grew up with bright eyes since i was like 9 years old, and now that they're ending it, it's like i'm letting a part of my childhood go.

  • @rejoinslanuit Well, I have some good news for you: it's not the end of Bright Eyes. They've said they'll make another album :) And they always say that this is their last album, probably to sell more CDs haha. Hold onto that childhood of yours!

  • "take the fireworks (letting off the happiness) the vanity (fevers and mirrors) the circuit board(digital ash in a digital urn) and the city streets (im wide awake its morning) shootin star swayin palm tree (cassadanga).

  • @lcd19777 That is actually a brilliant interpretation. I never thought of that. (I am NOT being sarcastic. I really do think it makes sense.)

  • Conor Oberst is my soul brother. Been a fan for a long, long time & i am always excited to hear his story because i am really trying to awaken from my attachment to ego. He seems to be on that path too. It's hard work but i feel life is getting better all the time. I love the new album because the message means so much to me & Bright Eyes have been one of my faves since they ever started. Excellent lyrics as always. Cheers guys.

  • @ScoobyHudson Wow

  • This song reminds me of another song that I can't remeber the name of. It's killing me! It sounds just like it!

  • una pasada de canciónnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • i love this so much.

  • BEST BAND!

  • This is my favorite song with the word "oscilloscopes" in it

  • looks like 12 people missed the like buttom

  • @caitiestarship fail

  • Forgave myself

    for the many times

i was cruel to something helpless and weak

  • I have absolutely no clue why Pitchfork called this album impersonal. To be honest with you, I think The People's Key is one of Oberst's best works. This song, in particular, personifies the Bright Eyes sound, except it's louder than their previous work.

  • @Hockyluv21 You are right. Pitchfork is a fucking joke, but I still look at what they're saying about some of the new albums that come out, and I always disagree. They are so far from objective in their critiques. Conor Oberst became "mainstream" and "uncool" when I'm Wide Awake came out, and many hipsters never forgave him. These are the idiots who care less about the music and it became cool to hate on him, even though he was only getting better and better. 5/10 my fucking ass. fuck pitchfork.

  • When I saw them in Charleston, SC.. I couldn't help it and I ended up crying.... The CD Lifted got me through a really crazy adolescence... And I love that their music keeps getting more positive, deep, and humble.

  • @susanajuly I TOTALLY CRIED TOO, IT WAS AMAZING.

  • Seeing him tonight. How is a girl supposed to focus on an essay with such impending awesomeness?!?!

  • i coverd a bright eyes song... look at my page i hope you like it..

bright eyes are the best..:) !

  • Seeing them live today. So excited I could.. no, no. I WILL sob violently.

  • @xGiraffes See you there :)

  • anyone seeing bright eyes at the fox in oakland next month? i'm going alone and and need to make friends haha

  • Conor Oberst is a farkking legend.

  • They're playing at SXSW (South by Southwest) in Austin... FOR FREE! so excited...

  • I hope that the music of Bright Eyes lives on forever

  • @diddly28 no one can replace conor =[

  • Saw them last night...and it was amazing. The sound was great, the band was sooooo on point, Conor only jumbled up one line. He was totally cool and funny.

  • My private life is a inside joke... no one will explain it to me.

  • @MolinMUSE LUCKY!

  • @MolinMUSE March 16th, can't wait :O

  • @MolinMUSE how was it?

  • @MolinMUSE Saw them last night opening for Death Cab.They were fucking epic!

  • @MolinMUSE i love you because your name has muse in it. I LOVE MUSE(: (: (:

  • I like this song. I will not deny that. Although I will say it is incredibly poppy, like an Elton John song, which seems strange for Bright Eyes.

  • This song is awesome if you enjoy sitting in your basement crying because you have no social life.

  • @arenshi no this isn't a song off of fevers and mirrors, it isn't morbidly depressing. Good job using your ears

  • @arenshi really? if anything, this song makes me want to jump into an open roof car and drive into the sunset.

  • @arenshi Pointless comment. I guess you enjoy doing so then, because you commented on the song.

  • pissed that the chicago show is sold out. ugh.

  • @mexifrida go on ebay for tickets if you have a lot of money you can still go they have to have some on ebay, the boston one is sold out i'm bummed and don't have the 200 dollars for a ticket

  • @GrottenGal860 for chicago, there are some at 73$. sucks that it's on a tuesday tho!

  • it's coming out tomorrow?!

  • After school on Tuesday I'm driving to Target and picking this up. I may even leave school early...

  • @michiganboy10 please let me know if you find it at target!

  • 10 people did burn up for the love.

  • Only 117,000 views. This album is a sunny summer day when everything is going just the way you want it to.

  • @8254988 You're completely wong. Don't start commenting about this man's soul. I would hope you are smart enough to realize all he did was get really into character for this act of BE. He's even said it started out as a joke. Face it self-loathing music is great music, but it has nothing to do with his soul. He's not even had a hard life. Coming from a middle to upper class famiy from the Mid-West isn't rough at all. Also, he's been rolling in dough on his own. BE=act, but a good one.

  • This song is too happy for Conor Oberst arggg lol

  • Dont bother watching this if your a fucking labeling TWAT ! Man people are ignorant and fucking stupid ,whoever understands him ,and his soul he puts into his music are the people who know as my friends.

  • this album reminds me alot of a mix between the emotion of Fever and Mirrors and the musical range of Cassadega. very good to say the least

  • & holler hipsters.

  • @yellowunicornortiger

hey um FUCK YOU! go listen to some black eyed peas! you fucking PUSSY FAGGOT!

  • EVERYONE ON THE COUNT OF THREE, ALL TOGETHER NOW!!!!!!!

..one of my goals on youtube is to be the highest rated comment. HAHAHAHAHA.

in the end, BRIGHT EYES IS AMAZING.

Conor Oberst is a musical God.

  • i am absolutely obsessed with this

  • This track reminds me of something that was created by Conor as a Cassadaga and Digital Ash In A Digital Urn musical love child. I absolutely love it. The album seems pretty solid too, he sure does have a fixation with throwing long speeches on the opening tracks of his albums though.
