@hugocaracas2021 Yes, China is now a powerful country, but that does not discount the amount of human suffering caused during Mao's regime. Furthermore, much of the real progress in China only took place under as a result of Deng XiaoPing's rule, during which he reversed much of what Mao had done. China is currently not a communist country. I am not ignorant, I have studied the period extensively.

@hugocaracas2021 First of all, communism and fascism are not the only options. There are many intermediary ones. Secondly, since Mao's death, China has only been communist in name, not in reality. Mao did do good in China, he did begin to bring industry to China, for example, but the human cost was far too great. The increases in production were not that great, all the iron produced by peasants was useless, and his policies caused a famine which killed 40 million. Nice idea, not so nice reality.

So what was the point of the Great Leap Forward if all the steel was useless? What was Mao trying to achieve by turning productive farms into makeshift steel complexes? Why not just train professionals and make as much as steel as you needed by converting the farms with weaker productivity into steel mills?

He did unite China and there were few other statesman to consider a "hero" In Taiwan they used to have Chang Kai Shek statues everywhere to form some kind of national identity. However as time has gone on Chang is remembered for being a gangster and a poor leader. Taiwan's identity will grow with time as a democracy. I suspect as the CCP losses more power Mao will be viewed with mixed feelings.
