it all depends on the setup of AWD. most systems are actually FWD UNTIL it senses slip and then transfers power to the rear end. however this entirely depends on the transfer case, my MT subaru has a 50/50 split and slides around corners quite nicely, which is more like a traditional 4WD system.
@Pilot853 my subaru has a 50/50 split front/rear, its a blast whipping it around corners. (granted i live in maine where we only get 3 months of real summer)
@Pokemon7785 Thats the great thing about rwd you can DRIVE out of a corner providing you are wearing the correct tyres for the conditions, while a fwd will understeer at relativly low speeds if wet as will awd to a lesser extent.
E46 bimmers are renown for the chassis and was considered the best in its class at the time. I drove a fwd nissan primera that almost killed me when I exited a roundabout with the understeer almost taking me onto the wrong side of the road, so driver error + fwd = higher chance of a crash imho. My 320d is a dream to handle.
@Fradias11 2001, The ride is firmer and you point the nose and she goes. She sounds like a taxi though lol, but I cant complain at 55mpg fully laden. Got a set of M+S and coped with the scottish winter snow a breeze even took her on the closed road over the moors due to the snow and ice and she refused to drift even with the ASC switched off. 11mm tread. Traction is king don't matter what you drive.
Take the same chassis, the same engine, the same engine placement, the same weight, the same suspension, and the same tires... only change the where the power goes to the wheels.... then do the same test. While I don't disagree that the results will be similar, they wont be as drastic and obvious. There are loads of other factors that go into how well a car handles.
If you think RWD is the best, then why do all of the super cars (Bugatti Veyron, All Lamborghinis, Audi R8) come with AWD standard? RWD isn't even an option on those vehicles. AWD is superior to RWD.
@KevinSok To save the rich owners' bacon. The R8 & Gallardo are rear drive with a viscous coupling clutch to power the front axle, that is super rudimentary.
The top current Porsche is rear drive, GT2RS. The Carrera GT was rear drive.
awd is physically better. no question. i would say when going around a steep roundabout or dodging stuffed animals i WOULD NOT hit the gas so its irrelevant how my car puts power to the road. Traction control is a good idea for any car. however in snow i woundnt bother with a rwd car if i had the choice
morons........this is the stupidest test of drive systems I've ever seen. AWD shines off road or in bad weather.....guess they didn't see the need to test all 3 cars in bad weather. Forget the drive system the rest of the car and the F-tard behind the wheel make a huge difference too. A champion WRC driver will do better with AWD while a boring-ass Nascar driver will be better with RWD. This "test" proves nothing
these are unrealistic tests, people don't spend time driving aimlessly around roundabouts or swerving escaped zoo animals... all these cars should be re-tested in realistic practical scenarios, wet, dry, snow to get the full idea of their capabilities.
Vicky is completely biased. she IS a rally driver and she knows how to drive. 90% of all "normal" drivers will just go in panic mode when the tail snaps (the RWD) and will just kiss the trees. just drove (yesterday) quattro in sweden with over 140 km/h on ice/snow roads at -12 degrees. NOBODY else could follow!
rwd the best.. but gota admit they chose 1 of the shitest handling fwd cars made.. put a civic type r or focus rs and it would be a very diferent story
Do this test in the rain.

In a FWD, let go of the accelerator and the car will dive in as good as the RWD.

AWD is a complete waste of money unless you live in a snowy place.
