This was the year Liza's mother died. She's really brave to be able to draw from that in this scene. That kind of thing seems horrible to have to relive.
Pookie seemed torn apart because of her mom's death when having her and then and her dad's distance... She didn't fit in...felt like an outsider, until she found Jerry, here.. I don't like the way he treated Pookie.
I've always wanted to see this film! And watching these Youtube clips, it seems to have a "Harold & Maude" feel (one of my all-time faves), so I'm really drawn in! Man, Liza is fantastic.
what the fuck, this performance is AMAZING! pakula really had a way with directing women...fonda, streep, even alexander in that bit role in all the president's men
This is a dandy, little movie and a most overlooked one. I saw it when I was in high school (1969!) and on TCM, not too long ago. For some reason, I can't find that the DVD is for sale. It's a horrible film title. But, Minnelli as the lonely, loud, kooky coed, Pookie (no, really), and Burton as her shy, sexual conquest are pitch perfect in their roles. Everyone knows Pookie's feelings, long before she realizes them, herself. Her initial, enjoyable goofiness turns to pain all too effectively.
Love this film. Been looking for it for years and years. Saw it once when I was a kid and always remembered it. Now it looks like I've missed it again. Damn.
I have always felt an affinity for Liza. Maybe a sensitive soul thing. I admire her talent, her vulnerability. Excellent actress. Why can't I find this movie anywhere?
I have seen used vhs versions listed by merchants at Amazon....although they are kind of expensive. BUT Wowee, I put this film right up there with Then came bronson and The graduate.....In this film Liza was the greatest actress in the world.
Chills. She was so insanely perfect for this part and it is her finest hour as an actress. The telephone scene?! My God... to die for. You should post that one next!
oh wow, ive never seen this, but im i love with it already! i love the character she plays. i hope when i die, some girl will run around and be joyful around my grave too, its a comforting thought :) xx
Last night I first saw this movie, and I was in love with Liza Minelli, is so beautiful.

The guy she likes is as ugly as sin. He looks like an IRS agent.
The guys in the 60s were ugly

@IlaughedIcried I had to check IMDB, but Liza was nominated for Best Actress and the song Come Sat Morn for Best Original Score (Song).
Noteworthy that Judy Garland died June 22 '69, and this was released Oct 22 '69. Judy probably never saw much, if any, of it.

A Bittersweet film - happy and sad at the same time. And the Theme Song...
"COME SATURDAY MORNING" by the Sandpipers - is Hauntingly Beautiful...

I have the feeling that Liza will be making her big onscreen comeback soon. The time has come for her to pick up another Academy award.

Lisa's best and most original perfermance.
Everything else, was just her trying to be her mom.
Excellent pix.
