Totally wrong. Damn these singers and conductors who have no idea what compound meter is. This is in 6/8 which means it's in 2. Not 3/4. It's basic kindergarten facts. She's singing it twice as slow as the composer indicates. but of course these singers only care about themselves and not the music. She is a great singer but not a musician. This sounds like an exercise in slow practice. Shame!
@organboi sorry my dear... but as a musician in a worldclass opera orchestra for 30 years I must tell you, that you are a totally jerk. do not know, how often I played this, but never ever in twice that tempo! some where a bit faster - and some a bit slower at all - but it's totally in the range. I agree that there are better renditions, f.e. Freni, but its childish to call everything not the best of all as "totally wrong". not the best version of this aria, but it is really good
pianosinger18 - I have heard Italian spoken in so many dialects and with so many nuances and it seems that everyone who comments is right? How absurd is it to make such petty discussion of such a performance? I admit I am not an opera scholar but I do know that opera is more about perfomance, soul and rythem than pronounciation. Tell you what...let's have a look at your performance...in anything and perhaps someone will listen to you.
singing of the highest order - from 2:12 to 2:30 it is as exquisite as it gets-- One breath with absolute perfect control-- Line up any other soprano you want- The entire performance of this aria is sublime --- To those who try to find fault-- They are the ones who always go after the best -- I understand--- that's their curse!
always right on the note -- the top is so focused and lush with a sumptuous full texture-- flows with an ease and confidence not many sopranos have mustered in a hundred years- Absolutely beautiful control and she has the breath control and capacity to caress the long phrase -- Enjoy her -- you may not see another one
@chaconazo7 I not only have had a subscription to the Met for more years than you've probably been alive but have heard Renee there many times. She fills the House with her glorious voice and you, my friend, are a fool with a tin ear. Stop pretending that you know something about an art form that clearly eludes you.
Not sure. I believe the "a" you're thinking of is indeed sung with ah. However there could be mutiple reasons to why she did that .. at her level I dont think it should be a huge issue, personally.
Ay, ay, ay, ay... This must be the longest (read: slowest) version of this arietta, which should be short and sweet. A self indulgent and vulgar display of "J'aime ma voix."
I agree. This is full of her 'signature' mannerisms. She has such a wonderful voice and when reined-in by a good conductor she's wonderful. I heard her Desdemona at the Met and was incredible. This example is embarrassing.
It is a mystery. She possesses a great instrument, and at the beginning of her career she could not be faulted. I attended performances of Otello, Le nozze, Rusalka, Boheme, etc. She was exquisite. She is a great musician as well. I have no clue why she has fallen into such bad habits. Very sad.

What an odd start...and such a slow tempo! zzzzzzzzzzzz...snore... It sounds like one of Strauss's Four Last Songs!

I will have to agree with many comments here. She is an awful musician. She doesn't honor the composer's intentions, only her ego. Just awful.

Also a very nice rendition. Great voice! If only a modern tenor were worthy of doing a duet with her.

why is she singing it sooo slow???
nanuka003 2 years ago
Does anybody find her pronunciation of the opening "a" in Babbino wrong? She
pronounces the "a" as in black, when the proper way is "ah" Beautiful voice though.
Just beautiful.

@pianosinger18 I speak Italian. The "a" is pronounced "ah". Period! What multiple reasons could there be to mispronounce a letter?

@JoelBWeisberg Yes gets my attention too. But what she does with this more than makes up for it. Now if we can get her a competent dressmaker. Oy.

All of those singers start to fall into bad habits after a while, even Cecilia, singing so breathily.
