@chaiter1 Throughout the aria, he doesn't resort to one single measure of scooping. Sure the voice had deteriorated a bit from his golden prime, 1951 to 1970, but he's is still way better than anyone before and after.
I've just given up any religious beliefs! This is INCREDIBLE! I sang this in concert the other day and probably didn't even open half as much as that on the B flats - after the really long phrases it's just so hard. Do you have the whole concert? Please post it if you do!
damn. what a huge voice. Do opera singers use microphones when they are performing in concerts? Or they still have no need for the microphone even in this kind of set-up?
wow. that's simply incredible. Thanks for the info. Corelli's voice practically blasts through my headphones yet he used no amplification whatsoever. Amazing.
Moorhe, with all due repect mate, what are you doing on youtube? I don't think that in the hundreds of videos i have watched, and that you have watched, you have made a positive comment about anything...who died and made you the expert on every performance that any tenor has ever sung? Are you a frustrated opera singer who sings in some church chior somewhere and is pissed with any tenor that has ever made it? If you had ever stood on a real opera stage, you might look at it all differently.....
I'm on YouTube to share music and comment, what are you doing on YouTube?
I do make positive comments and I do not believe anyone died to make me an expert. I am no expert. However, I do have an opinion, which I prefer to voice regardless of whether it is negative or positive.
I am not a frustrated opera singer, nor do I begrudge tenors who make it (would be rather silly considering I'm a baritone). And I have stood on the opera stage, it changed nothing but my respect for those who sing well.
BRAVOOO Maestro!!!!, my all time favourite tenor (he and A. Kraus are the best of the best). The complete pack; physically, voice, talent, acting skills, ex....everything in one artist. Bravoo!!!
He attacks in the high mask, letting the voice get its own level. Uses the appoggio in a mastery way.
"Celeste Aida" (Giovanni Martineli); "Nessum dorma"(Pavarotti,Corelli and Lauri-Volpi); "Pieta Signore" (Corelli and Del Monaco); "Ah leve toi soleil" (Corelli and Bjorling); "Core' ngrato" (di Stéfano,Corelli,Caruso and Gigli).
And,of course, listen the most famous baritone aria "Largo al Factotum - Il Barbiere di Siviglia" by Titta Ruffo, Giuseppe de Luca, Ettore Bastianini or Lawrence Tibbett. I hope you enjoy like i do ;)
Giacomoconti: Can you please tell me who you would consider the top ten tenors on your list? I am just leaarning about opera so I would appreciate your opinions. Then I can listen to them on you tube. Thanks so much for your consideration. Tony (Operapfan)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Here are my top 10 in no particular order except for the first two who are my absolute favorites Fritz Wunderlich Giuseppe Di Stefano Mario Del Monaco Alfredo Kraus Jussi Bjorling Michael Schade Placido Domingo Nicolai Gedda Pavarotti (of course) :) and Juan Diego Florez
Hello Tony, and first of all thank you for your kindness. I'm a lover and admirer of the opera and i can give you my list which I believe contains the best 10 tenors in history and not just a personal taste: 1. Enrico Caruso 2. Franco Corelli 3. Beniamino Gigli 4. Jussi Bjorling 5. Mario del Monaco 6. Mario Lanza 7. Giuseppe di Stéfano 8. Luciano Pavarotti 9. Giovanni Martinelli 10. Giacomo Lauri-Volpi I think you have to listen arias and canzones napolitanas like "O sole mio"
"O sole mio" (Enrico Caruso); "E lucevan le stelle" (Caruso and "Giuseppe di Stéfano encore"); "Tu ca nun chiagne" (Caruso,Corelli and di Stéfano); "Andre Chenier - Un di all azzurro spazio" (Corelli,Del Monaco and Mario Lanza); "Una furtiva lagrima" (Carlo Bergonzi - Gigli's tribute concert); "Di quella pira" (Corelli birthday present); "La donna é mobile" (di Stéfano and Alfredo Kraus); "Ch' ella mi creda" (Corelli and Giuseppe Giacomini); "O Paradiso L'africana" (Carlo Bergonzi);
mario lanza better than pavarotti? lanza wasnt even an opera singer and most voice teacher agree his voice was beautiful but not with a strong technique, he was what toscanini said a "natural voice". well its just my opinion. like everyones here
Mario was an opera singer who got recruited to Hollywood. Mario's vocal production should not be looked to as a model, I agree, but it isn't technically wrong. In fact, most voice teachers won't tell you there's a single right way, simply a path. Of course, when discussing "most voice teachers", "most voice teachers" are wrong about a lot of things. Keep singing!
Wow Franco was an awesome tenor, I'm so glad you posted this video... Its easy to see how the great Franco influenced both Andrea Bocelli and the spinto tenor Donald Braswell II.
Braswell has just start a new singing career after losing his speaking voice in 1995
Corelli gives a LESSON to Pavarotti of how to sing "Ch'ella mi creda" and many other arias, because the version of Pavarotti is flaky and weak..Corelli's moulding of the phrases is indeed remarkable and we will never see this again! Pavarroti was very very good and he is one of the most important but HE IS NOT the best or the greatest, but guys like Caruso, Corelli, Bjorling, Di Stéfano or Lanza were GREAT!
I guess some of the comments by you have been removed, but if you were asserting that Pavarotti was better for this aria, you're wrong, my friend. Pavarotti was definitely NOT a Puccini tenor. His voice was magnificent, you'll not hear me say otherwise. But it wasn't dramatic enough for this.
Giacomini, Corelli, Del Monaco, Caruso, and Domingo (yes, I know ;) were/are all better for this than Pavarotti was. Among others. =D
I was saying that the rendition of Pavarotti's from '91 on here doesn't represent his best shot at this aria. He did some incredible ones in his recitals of '73, beautiful lyrical interpretations, which are most appropriate for this aria.
I don't particularly like the term 'Puccini tenor', just as I don't like the title 'Verdi tenor'. Puccini wrote operas for heavy tenor voices (Johnson) and light tenor voice (La Boheme) and Pavarotti didn't suit the former but was great in the latter.
Ah well then we agree...I would guess without listening that a 1991 version of Ch'ella mi Creda would not be as good as a 1973 version, based on what I know of Pavarotti's voice and career.
Good point about the term "Puccini" tenor. It's a generalization, I guess, as the majority of Puccini's roles were more dramatic. but your La Boheme example is a good one, and Pav's Che Gelida Manina was always gorgeous!
well u arent right at all. pavarotti was a puccini tenor, he is a wonderful rodolfo and he was a great calaf. but for this aria pavarotti is the wrong choice, thats right.
So I guess I am right then because you agree Pav is the wrong choice for this.
I think "Puccini tenor" is a bad term to use, my mistake there. Some of Puccini's work is light, and for that Pav is good. For the more dramatic roles, he is not.
Lol ya he is amazing in almost every aria known in the world..since the first time i heard him years ago i became one of his greatest fans, because he is just fabulous and unforgetable in the world of opera!
Corelli will always be one of the greatest and most important tenors in history! beautiful and powerful voice, stage presence and high notes almost out of control! For the timbre, legatto, technique, size and beauty of voice, the BEST tenores of all time were: 1- Caruso 2- Corelli 3- Del Monaco 4- Gigli 5- Bjorling 6- Lanza 7- Di Stéfano 8- Pavarotti 9- Martinelli 10- Domingo The tenores that I LIKE THE MOST are: Caruso, Corelli, Di Stéfano, Del Monaco, Bergonzi, Bjorling and Domingo!
Jon Vickers was a great tenor but you can understand that is very difficult to select all of them because if i do so the list would only be fair until 30 tenors, and as you know there are only a few or just no recordings of some magnificent tenors of the 19 century..so,i put him in the "second 10 list" along with other GREATS like Francesco Tamagno, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Lauritz Melchior, Aureliano Pertile, Carlo Bergonzi, Antonio Cortis, Alfredo Kraus, Miguel Fleta and Giuseppe Giacomini.
There are NO vocal imperfections. There may be details of style which are very much of his time and place. He does not sing like an Anglican choir boy. But everything about the mechanics of singing is flawless in his command and, besides one of the greatest voices of all time, he had a heart, too. He understood the meaning of what he sang.
Being gay I must agree with you that Corelli was HOT but what about the scooping up to notes not a matter of vocal style at all but a technical flaw and then there's the vibrato of the pre Metropolitan days that he recognized and, to his credit corrected. Best Romeo and Werther not to mention Calaf. Not even close, however to Tucker in Forza, Tosca, and La Boheme. As Radames their about equal.
neduddki21: Clearly I enjoyed Corelli in most of the roles I've heard him sing but in Forza especially the cleaner line obtained by Tucker carried the day and you must admit that Tucker had great top notes. In Tosca Corelli asked Tucker to illustrate how he sang "O dolci mani" which shows Corelli's admiration. Corelli's best live recordings are Poliuto and Gli Ugonotti. For a while you could get a live performance of Werther but no longer unless a private recording company has it.
I stand by my opinion. I like Corelli better in Forza and Tosca, not to mention Trovatore. His best roles were these ones and Ernani, Don Jose, Dick Johnson, Calaf, Don Carlo. For my taste his interpretations had far more nuances and emotions, his voice was clearer, not so mushy . No wonder Callas wanted Corelli to be his partner in 1965 in Tosca as her letters prove. Corelli's asking merely shows his humility, nothing more or less. But as wrote, this is matter of taste.
I do not think Corelli is a God - BUT in this performance, for all the vocal imperfections, he is an artist. There is passion, there is piano, there is thought - this is fascinating...
Thank you. This is very interesting. People say all kinds of things: some repeatedly say that in the 50s he was not good yet,but when I listened to many of his recordings made back then, I realized how wrong they are. On the other hand, the reverse: I think it is "fashionable" to say that he was going down in the 70s, and so on. If you wish to discuss this any further with me, I will be happy.
There are certainly to many things that are "fashionable" to say in the opera world, like the people that say them do not think for tehmselves. I saw Bocelli on wednesday night, who was taught by corelli. It is also fashionable to be critical of him for his pop music, But what I heard that night makes him to my mind the best tenor alive, though certainly not in corellis class. Corelli to my mind is the greatest tenor of all history.
Oh,my dear sir..or Madame..with the Japanese beautiful name!People is so foolish sometimes...Beauty hasn't expalantion:Beauty is here(in FRanco.and in another ones like him) for to be coontemplated and loved...
so so right you are. corelli was KNOWN to cancel day of the performance throughout his career for FEAR of high notes. he had the WORST time on stage according to his colleagues and family members. many tenors made a career out of covering for him all over the world. one tenor, domingo even was sabatoged by corelli and therefore had to make his debut at the met days ealier than scheduled and even after a rehearsal of turandot at nyco. GREAT singing though! franco KNEW how his voice worked.
BELLISSIMO E CARO FRANCO, SEI IL PIÚ BELLO DEL MONDO!!!Come artista, come bravo Cantante, come Talento Originale, e dobbiamo dire la veritá, NON ESISTE OGGI DA NESSUNA PARTE NEL MONDO UN UOMO TANTO BELLO.¡¡¡SEI CON DIO, ANGEL DIVIN!!!
poverotti may have been the best but he did not have this volume!

Well his low Larynx technique convinces me and millions of other fans over the world!!!!
francotenor 2 years ago 2
I prefer the clean legato line of Pavarotti to scooping and excessive rubato.
It's almost impossible to hear one phrase here without glissandos, excessive tempo changes and hitting high notes from below.
Sorry guys, but this larynx technique doesn't convince me.

@chaiter1 Throughout the aria, he doesn't resort to one single measure of scooping. Sure the voice had deteriorated a bit from his golden prime, 1951 to 1970, but he's is still way better than anyone before and after.

damn. what a huge voice. Do opera singers use microphones when they are performing in concerts? Or they still have no need for the microphone even in this kind of set-up?
eyestrained07 2 years ago
No, they don't use microphone in concert halls either. Here he sings without amplification.

wow. that's simply incredible.

Pagliaccio1970 2 years ago
Mooorhe is a crazy Pavarotti-fan. A nut case, I would not bother. He did the same under my videos, and I had to block him.
AfroPoli 2 years ago
I'm on YouTube to share music and comment, what are you doing on YouTube?
I do make positive comments and I do not believe anyone died to make me an expert. I am no expert. However, I do have an opinion, which I prefer to voice regardless of whether it is negative or positive.
I am not a frustrated opera singer, nor do I begrudge tenors who make it (would be rather silly considering I'm a baritone). And I have stood on the opera stage, it changed nothing but my respect for those who sing well.
Mooorhe 2 years ago
BRAVOOO Maestro!!!!, my all time favourite tenor (he and A. Kraus are the best of the best). The complete pack; physically, voice, talent, acting skills, ex....everything in one artist. Bravoo!!!
He attacks in the high mask, letting the voice get its own level. Uses the appoggio in a mastery way.

mario lanza better than pavarotti? lanza wasnt even an opera singer and most voice teacher agree his voice was beautiful but not with a strong technique, he was what toscanini said a "natural voice". well its just my opinion. like everyones here
tauromaniac 2 years ago 2
Mario was an opera singer who got recruited to Hollywood. Mario's vocal production should not be looked to as a model, I agree, but it isn't technically wrong. In fact, most voice teachers won't tell you there's a single right way, simply a path. Of course, when discussing "most voice teachers", "most voice teachers" are wrong about a lot of things. Keep singing!

Corelli gives a LESSON to Pavarotti of how to sing "Ch'ella mi creda" and many other arias, because the version of Pavarotti is flaky and weak..Corelli's moulding of the phrases is indeed remarkable and we will never see this again! Pavarroti was very very good and he is one of the most important but HE IS NOT the best or the greatest, but guys like Caruso, Corelli, Bjorling, Di Stéfano or Lanza were GREAT!
giacomoconti 3 years ago 15
It depends what Pavarotti rendition you use to compare, his Tucker Gala one is very weak.
Mooorhe 2 years ago
I guess some of the comments by you have been removed, but if you were asserting that Pavarotti was better for this aria, you're wrong, my friend. Pavarotti was definitely NOT a Puccini tenor. His voice was magnificent, you'll not hear me say otherwise. But it wasn't dramatic enough for this.
Giacomini, Corelli, Del Monaco, Caruso, and Domingo (yes, I know ;) were/are all better for this than Pavarotti was. Among others. =D
aaronsande 2 years ago 2
I was saying that the rendition of Pavarotti's from '91 on here doesn't represent his best shot at this aria. He did some incredible ones in his recitals of '73, beautiful lyrical interpretations, which are most appropriate for this aria.
I don't particularly like the term 'Puccini tenor', just as I don't like the title 'Verdi tenor'. Puccini wrote operas for heavy tenor voices (Johnson) and light tenor voice (La Boheme) and Pavarotti didn't suit the former but was great in the latter.
Mooorhe 2 years ago
Ah well then we agree...I would guess without listening that a 1991 version of Ch'ella mi Creda would not be as good as a 1973 version, based on what I know of Pavarotti's voice and career.
Good point about the term "Puccini" tenor. It's a generalization, I guess, as the majority of Puccini's roles were more dramatic. but your La Boheme example is a good one, and Pav's Che Gelida Manina was always gorgeous!
aaronsande 2 years ago
well u arent right at all. pavarotti was a puccini tenor, he is a wonderful rodolfo and he was a great calaf. but for this aria pavarotti is the wrong choice, thats right.
stybboon 2 years ago
So I guess I am right then because you agree Pav is the wrong choice for this.
I think "Puccini tenor" is a bad term to use, my mistake there. Some of Puccini's work is light, and for that Pav is good. For the more dramatic roles, he is not.

where is Jon Vickers on the list...surely an oversite?
vickersman 3 years ago

And GOD was he beautiful!!
AulicExclusiva 3 years ago 5
i study with one of his old students...it's definitely a commanding production, but try sticking that in a choir--not so great.

searnold56 3 years ago
Being gay I must agree with you that Corelli was HOT but what about the scooping up to notes not a matter of vocal style at all but a technical flaw and then there's the vibrato of the pre Metropolitan days that he recognized and, to his credit corrected. Best Romeo and Werther not to mention Calaf. Not even close, however to Tucker in Forza, Tosca, and La Boheme. As Radames their about equal.
gaytenor 2 years ago
Not even close to Tucker in Forza and Tosca? That's matter of taste of course, I would say quite the contrary.
neduddki21 2 years ago 2
neduddki21: Clearly I enjoyed Corelli in most of the roles I've heard him sing but in Forza especially the cleaner line obtained by Tucker carried the day and you must admit that Tucker had great top notes. In Tosca Corelli asked Tucker to illustrate how he sang "O dolci mani" which shows Corelli's admiration. Corelli's best live recordings are Poliuto and Gli Ugonotti. For a while you could get a live performance of Werther but no longer unless a private recording company has it.
gaytenor 2 years ago
I stand by my opinion. I like Corelli better in Forza and Tosca, not to mention Trovatore. His best roles were these ones and Ernani, Don Jose, Dick Johnson, Calaf, Don Carlo. For my taste his interpretations had far more nuances and emotions, his voice was clearer, not so mushy . No wonder Callas wanted Corelli to be his partner in 1965 in Tosca as her letters prove. Corelli's asking merely shows his humility, nothing more or less. But as wrote, this is matter of taste.
neduddki21 2 years ago 2
I do not think Corelli is a God - BUT in this performance, for all the vocal imperfections, he is an artist. There is passion, there is piano, there is thought - this is fascinating...

1971, my favorite year for his voice, though I know most perfer him younger.
MusashiTzu 3 years ago
If you wish to discuss this any further with me, I will be happy.
minnie888444 3 years ago
There are certainly to many things that are "fashionable" to say in the opera world, like the people that say them do not think for tehmselves. I saw Bocelli on wednesday night, who was taught by corelli. It is also fashionable to be critical of him for his pop music, But what I heard that night makes him to my mind the best tenor alive, though certainly not in corellis class. Corelli to my mind is the greatest tenor of all history.

dibeling 3 years ago
so so right you are. corelli was KNOWN to cancel day of the performance throughout his career for FEAR of high notes. he had the WORST time on stage according to his colleagues and family members. many tenors made a career out of covering for him all over the world. one tenor, domingo even was sabatoged by corelli and therefore had to make his debut at the met days ealier than scheduled and even after a rehearsal of turandot at nyco. GREAT singing though! franco KNEW how his voice worked.

i disagree with you.
at 2:14 he takes a breath, opens the throat, opens mouth, sings the first note, leaps to Bb.
and as far as i have read, heard, it was stage fear/nerves, not of high notes.
domingo was not sabotaged by Corelli. domingo had the option of saying no. :)
