It simply blocked a large area of the garage. Unfortunatelly nobody of our family had the time to bringt the car back on the road. It takes too much time to do all the nescessary repairs. Anyway, it was not easy to give that car in some others hands for my dad.
Look, man this is a simple car like a wedge. U cant screw up with a little repair, 1st change the sparks to new isolator, 2nd clean the carburettor, 3rd check the ignition timing, and after clean the whole petrol system from the gas tank. Maybe the compression not enough, and engine need some cleaning at the cylinder-head. But this cant be give a hard lesson for the owner.
Anyway I never seen before a convertible edition of this car, exellent!
I cab explain the position of the radiator. Th first wartburgs didn't have a waterpump. The cooling water circulates by a naturally effekt. The cold water enters the bottom of the cylinders, gets heated and gets ighter. So it goes upwards to the cylinderhead , then to the top of the radiator. Not it gets colder an so heavier. So it gos down throug the radiator and back to the bottom of the cylinders. For this effekt the radiator needs to be higher then the engine. see next.
But the shape of the bonnet allows an radiotor positio higher than the engine only behind the engine. If you want to fit it before the engine you have to change the shape of the bonnet.
The physical effet, that lets the coolant circulate is similiary to the effect of an lava-lamp. In germany we call it the thermosyphon effekt. Later Wartburgs were equipped with an waterpump, but they didn't change the radiator. If the radiator isn't jammed by limescale problems with overheating are unknown .
I know quite a bit about old cars. I used to build old hot rods. I have a 1970 Dodge Challeger I did a complete ground up restoration on worth about $67,000. That still doesn't answer my question of why someone stuck that radioator in that rediculous spot.
One of my best friends has a 1923 Model T show car. It's radiator is right in front of the engine where it should be. It's a little older than 50 years, lol.
Yep, seems like the carburetor, but I was wondering, was the choke pulled all the way? Anyway, it ran good once it got going, since there wasn't much smoke. When my 312 was running bad, it left smoke like an F1 car after blowing the engine. Had to stop and get the dirt out of the carburetor.
What a terrible place to put the radiator. Very bad design flaw. It would be a good idea to put an electric fan behind the grille to pull in cooler air.
Not useless at all! It is a legitimate comment on what is prominently displayed in the first 30 seconds! The radiator's location is clearly unusual and my comment is appropriate to what is being shown.
the radiator is behind the engine, theres no space in front. and the (mechanical) fan can push air trough the radiator, thats all. no need of putting a fan behind the radiator or something like that. this installation is approved in diffrent wartburg series over many years.
It is a good location for the radiator - when U have small accident :) Many years ago my father had a bump driving Wartburg 353 (newer type of Wartburg). The radiator wasn't damaged and the car could go farther on its own. Next my father repaired the car and we travelled by it for next years. Good memories :)
u need ur carburetor adjusted

All right, I'm not trying to be rude, but why on earth would you give this car up? Price must have been right, I'd give anything for one.

My father had a Wartburg 311 from 1964 till 2007. Our car mechanic was a hero, to support it for an extra 20 years after the factory's closing...

You seem unusually sensitive about you're wartburg. Thats kind of creepy. Also, why is the radiator mounted in that weird position?

sorry, but u have to ask this question to the designer of the Wartbourg 311 series. Nobody moved the radiator, it is on its stock position
cNcFalc 3 years ago
@Smacked980 What makes you think the radiator should be in front of the engine? There is no rule as far as I know.
In this application, I had no problem with the radiator in its position, worked great, and I wasn't afraid that any minor crash would break it.
