I'm one of 'em people who actually enjoys the ride and song. Even if I wasn't able to ride this on my last trip to the park, I couldn't help but stare at the ride and thank Walt and Mary Blair. The song may be annoying to some people, but I enjoy it. One of my favorite rides~
I see nothing wrong with the African children laughing. As Walt says, children all over the world have one thing in common a love of laughter. Everyone should have a sense of humor.
@OurGangFan I totally agree. Why is it wrong to portray African children as happy. The world would be a better place if all children around the world were happy.
I rode this ride in 1964. Went their on a class trip. I bought the record and drove my parents nuts for the next week... This was amazing stuff in 1964. We hadnt even gotten to the moon yet.
@urdedmete That is wonderful that you were actually there. It really was amazing stuff for back then, but I still think it is amazing now. The song does get in your head but I love it anyway and this has always been one of my favorite rides.
They should put Nuclear Misiles and Tanks in the China section, a mountie and rednecks having a backyard party at the Canada section, A Hippie and a Mountain of drugs at the America Section, Tsunamis in the Japan section, Tigers eating people at the India section, and a Revived adolf hitler!
@moger999 It's not like India has tigers roaming the streets and eating people. Tigers are now endangered and there aren't enough in one jungle leave alone any extras to roam the streets. However; there have been some rare cases in remote areas where there have been tiger attacks but those are few and far between. Like a one off thing. But if you said this all in humor; it's hilarious!!!
I don't see this ride as having stereotypes at all. I see it as a celebration of different cultures. The world would be pretty boring if we were all alike.
I love this ride, I went last month to WDW and my kids and wife enjoy it... The message from Walt Disney is crystal clear "it's a small world after all"
There were many scary, wrong, freakish, would scare me, would scare younger children, but I like it. I wouldn't want to really ride it, just watch it from a screen on my table.
@mrsalvinseville This ride was in 1964. A different time than now. People did not have the politically correct mindset that they have now. The main message though is the same, "World Peace".
@mrsalvinseville ~ It was '64. Plus, they've got about 5 to 10 seconds per land to get you to recognize where you're supposed to be. You want an in depth examination of foreign culture in that amount of time?
My friends are really annoyed by this ride and the song but to be honest I LOVE this ride and the song (even though I'm 14.) I don't know if it's the joy (among other emotions) or the fact that it makes me feel like a kid again, or the fact that I've been going to Disney World every year since I was 3 and every time I go my Aunt makes me go on this ride (probably that last reason) but I have always loved this and sometimes when I'm in a good mood or need some cheering up I quietly hum this song.
Thank you so much for posting this. I don't remember ever enjoying it as much in person. Perhaps the camera capturing things you might miss yourself , not having to smell diesel, and not having to stand in line for an hour made the difference but it just seemed different watching this version as opposed to say, a 1994 video posted here that was just irritating and did not seem to clearly represent each country as it did in this video. Just my own observations. Thank you again.
@dwarflover63 I am glad that you enjoy the video. This is the original Small World, before it even arrived at Disneyland. I agree that the original is the most adorable. This also applies to the original Disney shows and movies. I love the classics!
I had the LP soundtrack for this exhibit when I was a kid, with pages of color photos illustrating it. I listened to it over and over again, and my Mother still can't hear the song without flinching. This brought it all back again. Thank you for posting it! Too bad I can't download it.
@drrobertchi I had the same album :) This was one of my favorite rides at Disneyland as a child. There are free programs you can download to capture a YouTube clip onto your computer.
@LoreneFaith For some reason RealPlayer refuses to download it. I wondered if Disney or you had blocked downloads of it. Either way, I love seeing this, and my Mother actually enjoyed it when I sent it to her. Naturally I am in shock! You have made two people very, very happy. Thank you!
@chipdirk91 You have to remember that this was a product of the sixties, so of course it's dated. Personally, I think that it was remarkable for its time; the builders obviously did their homework and successfully represented a large number of cultures, nationalities and races. Sure, a Mexican person might not like being depicted as only ever sporting a sombrero, but it was a large step forward in the day to represent them at all.
thanks form posting this, not only its a look at the original ride with "Uncle Walt" giving us a lucky running commentary but also its from one of mt all time tv shows as well
I, too, saw this as a small child. We lived in NJ when I was 5 and I have fond memories of going to the fair several times with my Dad. We had the 45 rpm record that they gave out at the pavillion, and we used to play it over and over again! Thanks for posting this. No wonder it's hard to keep the tears at bay whenever I have gone through this attraction with my kids over the past 15 years at the various Disney parks...brings back childhood in a big way for me!
It's good to see the great nation of Australia represented... oh wait, it wasn't. Thanks for that, Walt. I guess we're just too cool for "It's a Small World". :P
I'm not sure if this or the movie "Barbarella" made me paranoid about dolls... No, seriously, thanks for posting this. I've been subjecting myself to IASW since it opened (I was three!). Can't see a lot that's changed, although I notice Australia & New Zealand are missing. Must have come later...?
@lavenderliberal There have been some changes to this original ride over the years. The movie that really made me paranoid about dolls is the somewhat silly 80's flick titled "Dolls".
thanks what a great memory. it was so fresh and new and loud and bright......THIS was the fad of that year. not computer effects or pop stars half dressed. this was a tech marvel, a singing ride that is a mechanical puppet show....thanks still a happy few moments. and a catchy tune.
I'll admit that even though I'm 17, I love this ride simply because of how much it makes me feel like a child at heart. I don't know what it is about this ride that triggers that feeling in me, but it does it so well and I guess that's why I can go on this ride and feel so happy afterwards.
That feeling's triggered in me even more when I watch vintage footage like this of how the ride originally was back when it was first created. Thanks for sharing this! :3
@FanOingo93 Your welcome. I am glad you enjoy the clip. I first fell in love with this ride when I was six, and that was in the 60's. I still love it and it still makes me feel happy too!
And let me guess.. There was a girl and she saw a doll that looked like John Lennon, and jumped off the little boat and screamed "That doll looks like a Beatle!!!" And she stole it :)
Times have changed, I hope they didn't fix it up and put Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers stuff in it.
I went to Disneyland last week. When I was younger, I hated the ride because I thought it was incredibly scary. All I could think was "these are all evil robots that move"..now, when I'm 13, I just think it's very stereotypical, but that's just the magic of Disney. They added a New America part, but for some reason I don't remember the part where they're all together. I was also upset that the only S. America country they had was Brazil. No Argentina or Chile.
@LoreneFaith Why not try going down this year? I'm there for Silly Symphony Swings, Small World, Toy Story Midway, &, of course, WORLD OF COLOR!!!!!!!
@disneygrab1 Oh gosh, I would if I could. I am graduating from my school in September and wish I could make the trip then but funds are limited and so I may have to wait until 2011 so that I can see all that you mentioned plus the little mermaid.
I was 36 years old the last time I rode through "It's A Small World", and would you believe it almost brought a tear to my eye?? It brought me a lot of joy to step away from my hectic life for a while and see this fantastic display of the world's children and their cultures. Can't wait to go again, thanks for posting!
@quirpco I have always loved "It's A Small World" ever since the first time I saw it when I was six years old. I recently went back to see it again and it was amazing standing in line and looking at the animal bushes like I did when I was six and watching the clock tower and seeing the figurines coming out and the clock chimes and music play. It was like I was six again and in a time warp.
I remember this at the 1964 NY World's Fair. It was so much fun. I did not know that had a copy of it here. I was just looking for song and found it to my surprise. I always remember it with such fun and fond memories at age 6 it left a lasting impression. Thank you it brought back the joy :)
"Asia", how generic, how exotic. A continent with no national boundaries or cultural identities. Just geographical regions, plus 'China'. Wow and this was in the 60's. All they have in Africa is Cleopatra and Harlem jive music, played on ethno instruments that aren't even replicated in the sound track. Gotta love Disney!
@buddahbuddy0077 I don't agree at all. I don't think they could make it any better now. It would lose its charm. They have never been able to make things better because they are more modern. They are just colder and some how stale. It is just like CGI, it is not the same and does not have the magic of the old special effects.
@LoreneFaith I agree with buddah. For example, look what happened to the Enchanted Tiki Room, they completely killed it! for that they should have just shut it down, I'm sure Walt would not have approved of that update... And they ruined
@LongLiveDisneyMagic Thankfully the Disneyland Enchanted Tiki Room has not been changed. It is the small one that I saw as a kid in the 1960s but I do agree that the one they now have at Disney World is horrible.
I rode this as a (very) small child at the world fair in 1965. I still remember aspects of that ride. I thought it wonderful then, and do now. Riding the "newer" (non fair, but still no Disney characters) version of the ride in Orlando, whenever I'm lucky enough to do so.

Kinda makes you feel great about the Illuminati's plan for one-world government and the New World Order, doesn't it? Everybody now! It's a small world after all...
..this is brilliant.. wow ... the ride me and my family went on at Disneyland Paris last week ... the kids loved it ... watching this video though , isn't it sad that the USA is revoked throughout the world .... innocence well and truly lost ....
My partner John and I made it to nyc for the '65 fair. This was a very costly move on disneys part and he partnered with pepsi. We so enjoyed it we went through 3 times. Now 45 years later were still alive and able to enjoy its a small world once again together. Thanks!
my god! i have been looking all over the Internet to see if the Dutch children would be singing, but even back then they could not make right lyrics for it! o.O
One can tell the world view of the US back then (or maybe now even). Ireland -> Scotland -> England -> France -> Greece -> India -> SE Asia -> China + Japan -> Africa -> S. America -> Brazil -> Mexico. You get specific countries in E. Europe, the whole of SE Asia, Mid East skipped, Russia skipped, and Africa in 2 parts.
I just realized that there's no countries from the Caucasus represented in It's a Small World :(

I’m a Japanese, but the Japanese version of the song really sounds odd to me.
Is it really sung by real humans? it’s so unemotional that it sounds like machines are singing.
even vocaloids can sing more emotionally.
though I love this video. ethnically arranged theme songs are just wonderful.
especially I love Slavic and Arabic ones.

anyone gets a feeling that if the dolls were alive they would come after us for singing that song over and over again?

I went when I was 5 or 6. I actually remembered this one and a few other things.
Gosh it was fun. I wish for those days again.

My dad went to the 64 New York's world fair when he was 16. He took some pictures when he went on that ride.

@SheWhoIsAmy That is fantastic. You should post them on the internet sometime. I would love to see them.

You might not believe this, but... It's A Small World is my favorite ride at Disneyland.
disneygrab1 1 year ago
@disneygrab1 I do believe it. I have loved this ride since the first time I saw it at six years old. :)
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
@LoreneFaith Awesome! I even might be lucky enough to go back to Disneyland for Christmas! (Boy, I really hope I do...)
disneygrab1 1 year ago
@disneygrab1 I have never been able to spend Christmas at Disneyland. It is something I really need to do.
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
@LoreneFaith Please do. It's A Small World is SO unreal at night! Lights EVERYWHERE!
disneygrab1 1 year ago
@disneygrab1 It sounds wonderful! I plan on going there in 2011 to see the Little Mermaid ride. Maybe I can make it during the Christmas season.
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
@LoreneFaith Why not try going down this year? I'm there for Silly Symphony Swings, Small World, Toy Story Midway, &, of course, WORLD OF COLOR!!!!!!!
disneygrab1 1 year ago
@disneygrab1 Oh gosh, I would if I could. I am graduating from my school in September and wish I could make the trip then but funds are limited and so I may have to wait until 2011 so that I can see all that you mentioned plus the little mermaid.

It must have been quite an endeavor moving all those animitronics, props, and sets to Disneyland for reassembly once the World's Fair was over !!

I was 36 years old the last time I rode through "It's A Small World", and would you believe it almost brought a tear to my eye?? It brought me a lot of joy to step away from my hectic life for a while and see this fantastic display of the world's children and their cultures. Can't wait to go again, thanks for posting!
quirpco 1 year ago

It's funny how some of these animatronics are better than the ones we get in the parks today (*Cough* Monsters, Inc).

The song, SO ANNOYING!!!!!!

they could probably make it a 1000times better now with modern tech
buddahbuddy0077 1 year ago
@buddahbuddy0077 I don't agree at all. I don't think they could make it any better now. It would lose its charm. They have never been able to make things better because they are more modern. They are just colder and some how stale. It is just like CGI, it is not the same and does not have the magic of the old special effects.
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
@LoreneFaith I agree with buddah. For example, look what happened to the Enchanted Tiki Room, they completely killed it! for that they should have just shut it down, I'm sure Walt would not have approved of that update... And they ruined
LongLiveDisneyMagic 1 year ago 2
@LongLiveDisneyMagic Thankfully the Disneyland Enchanted Tiki Room has not been changed. It is the small one that I saw as a kid in the 1960s but I do agree that the one they now have at Disney World is horrible.

I rode this as a (very) small child at the world fair in 1965. I still remember aspects of that ride. I thought it wonderful then, and do now. Riding the "newer" (non fair, but still no Disney characters) version of the ride in Orlando, whenever I'm lucky enough to do so.

In this video the song's not repetative that's why everyone love this.
They probably should of just had the song with words repeating in the last room then noone would complain.
Love this any way.XD

My partner John and I made it to nyc for the '65 fair. This was a very costly move on disneys part and he partnered with pepsi. We so enjoyed it we went through 3 times. Now 45 years later were still alive and able to enjoy its a small world once again together. Thanks!
