This may be very weird, but I am descended from some of the first immigrants to this side of the pond (Swedish, Welsh, Dutch, French, Swiss) and if you don't understand why the Jewish and African parts of this musical resound with me than the other, turn in your high school diploma. You are not worthy to call yourselves citizens of the USA. Ragtime? Give me a break. This was playing out in Philadelphia of 1700. Nice score, though, considerng the 1900's New York misunderstanding.
This was true of Philadelphia in 1700, New York City in 1910, and so many numerous eras of American history, as this story tragically continues to repeat itself even today. The whole point of such a powerful play, there will be no heaven here until things change.
Had no idea Lea was in ragtime at all! let alone playing the little girl who i played in FCT's production of it. Most amazing experience of my life. words cannot describe how amazing that show is and to have the honour of being in it is priceless :) Brilliant.
@iou50bucks I believe the woman stretching the C6 at the end is the woman holding the baby....although I'm sure Marin can sing a C6 too. She was classically trained, and a C6 is easily stretched for Sopranos. I don't know what her fach is, sing I haven't heard her sing opera, but for musical theatre, she is definitely a Soprano, although she does sing a lot of Mezzo songs too.
@Christinasvenska I've never heard her sing opera either, but Marin is undoubtedly a Soprano. She's singing a lot of Mezzo songs in Next to Normal right now though, but she sounds absolutely incredible.
So if you look closely, when Tateh appears, and later when they focus on him at 3:46 you will see a 12 year old Lea Michele, better known as Rachel Berry on Glee! She originated the role of "Little Girl" in this show. I have loved this show for ages, and totally didn't make that connection!
It's really too bad that the revival of Ragtime was taken off of Broadway. I really wanted to go see it... but now it may be many years until it's revived again. The play though just seems absolutely brilliant, and the music is first rate.
The revival was taken off because there were not enough people that went to go see it to cover the large cost of putting on the play.
The play was met with critical acclaim, and it was really popular with audiences.
If the play was revived in another time when we weren't in the worst recession since the Depression itself, I think the play would have had a really good chance of taking off.
I really want to see a Broadway show of Ragtime- but I might have to wait 15 years for another revival.
I am such a huge Audra fan. So sorry I missed seeing this the first time around, but I did see her first show which was Carousel when I was 6 and loved her ever since! I think she defies the word "angel."
i think they only miced the main characters for this performance because you can hear Audra and the other lead characters way louder than everyone else
Actually, people are saying that the revival is BETTER than the original. I'd agree, because it goes into way more depth, and the woman who plays Mother (can't remember her name?) gives such a great performance. I'll be shocked if she doesn't get a Tony nod.
I love how you can hear Marin and Audra's voice soaring above the others, which may just be that they had mics and most everyone else didn't, but you know what since it's the delectable voices of Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald, I am perfectly ok with that. This show was perfection and I'm so happy it's being revived! I'll just miss Marin, Audra and Brian Stokes-Mitchell. They were all completely brilliant!

it was the music of something beginning
an era exploding, a century spinning
in riches and rags and in rhythm and rhyme,
the people called it ragtime, ragtime!
