This performance, along with Hello Bluebird (HAAAAAAAAAA-LOOOOOOOOOOOOO) are simply outstanding vocals . . . and Judy was no spring chicken during these performances either. BUT SHE NAILED THEM
Dear Judy what a wonderful rendition of true talent & emotions without the hype of today's distractions that try to hide dishonest performances with no talent and character of the artist and his/her skill.
@ajgroelant I actually LOVE the red on red, especially in the middle of the song when she turns her back and walks back toward the curtain, as if her character were immersed in the stage -- they did this in several other scenes in the movie (matched her dress with the stage background), and I think the effect is wonderful!
Her best version of this ... Wonderful production values ... move from inner monologue to theatre, etc. What power! ... and what seeming conviction. Odd, but I do not even think of this as "Fred's song anymore ... but more Judy's own. And yes, the walk ... love the walk. (And despite the comments of others ... I think the red on red works well in the context of the film!)
this was on netflix. so beautiful. im 16 and ive been in love with judy since i was 11. during these 5 years i come to her, she knows my pain, she comforts me. she puts a smile on my face. thank goodness for judy.
I literally cannot describe Judy Garland, but I will mention that I have never ever loved anyone else's voice as much as Judy's , right from the start when I was 2, starting with the wizard of oz, my favourite film of all time!
I think she is finally letting herself "unravel", in this performance and showing the pain she is in emotionally. A FANTASTIC performance, and she deserved an Oscar for it.
heres a question, can someone explain why judy has a different hairstyle and clothes style in the first half of the movie? was there a big gap or something? Look at her in hello bluebird, nice clothes and they really suit her, i think her clothes from after hello bluebird are not complimetary at all to her....and her hair is a bit mad after it as well....
I know this is gonna sound wierd but notice at the end how her throat and lips quiver while she's holding that last note from 4:04 to 4:10. For some reason that's always the only thing that I can focus on for this number. It's amazing, where the hell does that voice come from? Seriously.
When she sings the last note and walks off it RIPS ME UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every time I see it. I have the movie and it is truly her story come to the screen. I hope when GOD reruns this earth that we all get the chance to see her and do better ourselves.Because even tho she was sick people left her standing there all alone by herself. And that is not the kind of world I would want to live in.R.I.P. Judy
I just saw this movie. Had never heard of it before seeing the clips on YouTube. Wasn't expecting a great film, but it was. It is an excellent film. Garland's acting is so ahead of its time, and she should have won an Oscar. Edith Head's costumes were terrible, but that said, this is a film that every Garland fan should see.
Love this song by Judy but I like the version on her TV show a bit more. That was live and pure electric. On both versions I love it when she turns and walks around. That knocks me out every time. However, my overall favorite of this tune has to go to Fred Astaire as he sings it in The Bandwagon, walking along the train platform. Beautifully sung. Gorgeous shot. Just pure elegance! Judy and Fred, love 'em both.
You see here little kids who likes untalented pop stars who only got into show business because of there good looks and shows alot of skin in music videos...
This is real talent!
Judy Garland was sooooo much more then a pretty face!
Judy was in peak voice here. I wish she had sung this at Carnegie Hall... The song "It Never was you" she sang in this film was done live and not prerecorded.. She is TRULY " MISS SHOW BUSINESS" NO one then or now could ever touch her style and singing technique, MGM she once said on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson that they had the biggest influence on her career. She lived her songs and she could wrench tears out of Soild Rock..
Here we see the difference between a singer and a true performer. Everything she does contributes to the effect, especially those eyes that can look so lost one moment and defiant the next. The most thrilling number I can think of.
@1940smusicals Judy wasn't well here, is was on too many medications again to loose weight and meet the demands of her agents to work, at this point she was becoming temperamental again, holding up the picture, fighting with the director fighting with Sid, and fled from the US to the UK with Joe and Lorna against Sids wishes, and he was having an affair with one of her agents. i don't know the full story on that,
@joeyjosephs You're right on all counts. Re: her agent affair, yes, she was having an affair with David Begelman while married to Sid; Begelman was married as well. This was an unfortunate habit of Judy's- mixing business with what she convinced herself was romance. Begelman did rip her off; not millions as often said, but still, many thousands of much-needed money. Years later, he took over Columbia Studios and was busted for various frauds, including forging Cliff Robertson's name.
If anyone remakes this movie I will have a lot of stuff to say, some things need to be left alone. There was talks to remake A Star Is Born and rumored for Beyonce to be in it, that is the day I would lose all self control and have a melt down. Judy remade it and it shouldn't be touched.
FLAWLESS! I have this film on DVD. I love watching it this time of year. It's a cozy up under the blanket kind of movie. I mean that in a good way.....cheerful, funny, yet sad at times.
Thanks SOOOO much for posting!!! This is my favorite performance of any song by anyone. The power and emotion are incredible, and I've been waiting for someone to post this for ages. The power of Judy's performance here is almost superhuman, and your channel is so well organized and helpful. Cheers.

Great vocal. Hideous dress. That is the one dress Edith Head did not design. Who would wear red in front of a red curtain?
She looked great in red in Meet Me in St. Louis and In the Good Old Summertime, but not here.
But the talent is awesome. That's why she is still so popular.

Certainly a career-capping performance. Too bad the wardrobe department couldn't find her a better fitting brassiere for this number!
