I had a teacher in high school explain something about George Lucas. When the original trilogy were being made he was unhappy the way the films came to be. this was because he had great visions for the films, the way he really wanted audiences to see them. He couldnt pullit off because the effects back then werent advanced enough. With the dvd releases and all he was able to make changes to match his original visison for the films. idk if this is true soo yeah:p
i see no problem with these changes, they affect the story in no way, and make the it look slightly more realistic, people are just complaining over absolutely nothing.
I agree with most Star Wars fans on the changes TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. I mean, if George Lucas had just digitally remastered some things and made some shots a bit cleaner and brighter and such, just easier on the eyes, which I believe half of these changes are, that would've been fine. The additions and the BIG changes, however, like the extended and redone shots, I really disagree with. I mean, what's the plus side to showing the whole Millennium Falcon actually take off from the hangar?!
The only change I ever had a problem with was Greedo shooting first, the rest do not effect the story whatsoever, what exactly is everybody's problem, is it the changes your annoyed with or the greed of George Lucas??? I mean it keeps the trilogy living on, and despite the questionable motives of Lucas, at least kids of todays age can build the same memories we all have of star wars, I mean it is everybody's sentimental classic and a few tweaks here and there keep it relevant.
I think the "Han chasing the stoormtroopers" scene makes more sense now because he chased them and then when they looked at him he was like "WOOOW! Thats alot of Stormtroopers" when it was exactly as many as he chased. Now its like 100 so that make sense why he is scared.
10:00 Yeah, when I was little, I just thought he was being mental and sarcastic, like "ok, Han's been drinking too much coffee", I mean why scream, just because the stormtroopers stopped at a dead end?
The change is much better; that really says "HOLY SHIT!!!!" a full battalion!
it actually DOES break my heart a bit, seeing what has happened to those lost movies of my youth. george lucas seems to have an extremely tenuous grip on reality. too much time spent making goofy space operas, watching poor, poor acting he "directed" in an endless field of green. hes obviously making em more fit for children - but having been a child myself and seeing lasers blasting holes in the empire soldiers did NOT scar me for life. i was a kid, but i have doubts george ever was. shame.
@bijibadness You can't tell the difference unless you're looking for it. We're talking about a couple of frames removed and you still see the wounds.
People need to calm the fuck down about these edited versions. Most of the changes are purely cosmetic, like freshening up the color of the lightsabers and cleaning up the audio. Sure, some of the major changes sucked ass, like Hayden showing up in RotJ, but all in all, the remastered versions are an improvement.
4:53 - what the ####? a stupid soda can slurping sound?! obviously the twolf thing was far too frightening for children. this is painful.
5:34 - ah yes, i nearly forgot about this until it happened last time i saw it. aside from the change in character it implies, it just makes no sense and looks RIDICULOUS. han sort of (poorly) shifts a bit. i dont care about han not MURDERING the dude, but it was just done so poorly that it really IS the worst of all. we're at defcon LAME, folks.
- 3:35 - HA HA LOOK AT MORE GOOFY SLAPSTICK. FALL DOWN, GO BOOM.
- 3:45 - a poorely rendered, huge lizard walks right across the shot, disguising everything that's going on. this is a truly original concept; totally insane, pointless distraction. wow.
@bijibadness "Relatively casually into Star Wars"? Judging by your triple-post nerd rage here, I'd say you're slightly more than relatively casually into Star Wars.
Someone who is casually into Star Wars would go "Oh, cool, better special effects!" and be done with it.
you know what, #### star wars. back in '96 or so that box set of the non-####ed ones were truly great entertainment for a young kid. seeing these changes and how in many cases they detract terribly from the movie and just spit on a once great thing just makes me throw up my hands in exasperation and move on. it was good when i was young, sure, i grew up on those movies.im sure we all did. but there are SO many better written, conceived and engaging movies for me now, so it's really not a loss.
just watched the DVD "commentary", which is but snippets of dialogue placed at sort of opportune moments. george will say how big a genius and outsider he was, silence, then ben burtt will start up about his genius sound design. lucas comes off as a pretentious blowhard, as does carrie fisher, and the special effects guy praises the special edition changes(!). on 'empire', that film's director is charming and humble - like the movie, and as i dont really care for jedi i didn't bother.
the only whing i didnt like in the changes is that weard head jerk solo does, (i liked the original better) the bar scene with the changed characters and the censorship other than that the thing kinda got better oh and the entering the space station of Alderon with the sucky CG and those retarded Dinos
george really is a retard, does he not realise that every edit he made did infact ruin each and every scene, sometimesI think george got aspergers or something.
I would say I do not like the major revamped scenes but most of the scenes are just clarity changes. you have to expect that with VHS to DVD and then to Blu-Ray. The additions however, are so they can blend in easier with the new series. I still dont like them.
George Lucas Is Semi-retired now because everyone keeps hating on him for changing a few things. Does anyone else think that he can fix anything in the orignal movie except in 2015 when its in 3-d he changes it back to HAN SHOT FIRST
@OfficerTwix He's semi-retired because of many things. For me, George Lucas started and continues to fund a great many things that are important to film but somewhere between 1983 and 1997, he let his ego get the best of him. Kurtz and Kasdan and Kershner and Maarquand really defined Star Wars just as much as Lucas. He created the original concept and others have now expanded it better than him. This is certainly proven true by him saying Red Tails is "basically Episode VII."
some opf those changes where good, others pointless but ehhh ok, but others fucking horrible, for example the death star battle extra scenes where ok and good, the changes on the cantna where soo stupid specialy the greedo scene, the falscons scape ehh unecesary but just ok, theres also a scene when the empire lands on tatoine next to the scape pod and they added some stuff they didnr remplaced so it was ok, the changes on moss eisley where inecesary and stupid as well

I don't know what an explosive shockwave looks like in a vacuum, but I could never tire of seeing Alderaan or the Death Star being destroyed anyway.
The only real improvement I've seen is in Episode I, in which any change whatsoever would be an improvement by default: making Yoda a CGI character was better than that RC not-Muppet-thing they used in the beginning.
If I was younger, I would still have impure thoughts regarding Princess Leia.
I'm done boycotting this shit, I'm buying the blu-rays mainly because I scratched my DVD's due to being a little kid back then and yadayada... I don't give a shit he can CGI all he wants, makes Yoda in the last two movies CGI or Jabba CGI in the last movie. I'm done my voice does nothing. You know what just replaced the blasters with a laser pointer, I don't care! You want to fuck up Star Ward George... Fine! I'm ok with a few changes Yoda in Episode 1, changing some lighting, fixing the lights
Some changes are really great, but he could've made the 3D creature stuff that he added a little more fake-looking to match better the rest of the creatures. At many points it looks irritating since the "old world" meets the "new 3D world".
The number on the Tractor beam, that OB1 is at, says Tractor Beam 12, but in the 2004 version, C-3P0 states there are only 7 Tractor beams. But i guess in either version it works, as in the original we dont hear 3p0 say there is 7, just like in the 2004 version we dont see there is 12 written.
Those stormtroopers at 3.30 are a "mirror" image. George is such a tight ass, hed rather hire 2 troops and stick up a mirror, than pay for 4 troops that might look a bit different.. ugh soo cheap. lol (the image on the right may move later than the opposite image, but thats just delaying movemeant to make them appear different. You cant fool this little padawan lol
Lucas is so obsessed with cramming the screen with shit, its proof the guy doesn't have a clue about staging and composition, did he have anything to do with Star Wars at all? or did talented people make the movie and he took the credit?
Pretty much. Lucas wrote the script for the first movie, and then people turned it down so much that he re-wrote it, like, 20 times. Then when he made a version they liked, he basically got a bunch of people that knew what they were doing to do the work for him. He didn't even write the script for the following 2 movies, but still got most of the credit despite them being directed by Irvan Kershner and Richard Marquad respectivily.
Seriously, thanks for all the views guys but for anyone asking questions about the changes, check the article that my video got its source from in the description box for a more detailed look. Thanks.
@JediFan421 If you think the "1977 original theatrical" version, which is on the special features disc of the DVD, is...well it isn't!! A lot of people think George has only recently started tinkering with his movies...wrong again! The 1977 theatrical release has NEVER appeared on home entertainment media. I am sorry but YouTube limits what I can write, here are a few corrections. "Close the blast doors" did appear in the original. Close up of the bodies of the Lars couple did not.
04:03 wait a minute! That looks like a fucking VIDEOGAME:@ There's nothing real on that scene! WTF LUCAS? WHAT THE FUCK? I seriously think someone should put a hit on georgie! No kidding man! It'd be the best for millions and millions of fans! We don't need him anymore! WE already have like 3000 different versions of the SAME FUCKING MOVIES:@! I mean seriously, do we need more?
Wait, at 2:10-20, is the first the original, or the second?
The Blu-Ray upped the dragon even more, right?
Whatever it may be, the second version is better - there is as good as no "monster growl", it's done with nothing but musical sound effects, leaving it ambiguous whether Ben had made a sound or just "scared their minds".
If that's the 2004 version, then I guess it was a temporary improvement :D
"Open the blast doors!" Make up your frikkin minds stormtroopers, no wonder you lost.
1-3 of these changes seem logical, but all the others either seem pointless, meant to incite anger, or show off videogame-like CGI. The original effects were great and groundbreaking, no need to ruin them with fake cold CGI.
The new battle of yavin looks like a cut scene from a video game i bet in the 2011 blu rays will have a little sign on the corner that says press A to skip
With more expansive camera angles and replacing prosthetics with cgi, makes it look bette, but is it worth shelling out for the new ones?Fr purely aesthetic reasos only maybe, but otherwise, probably not
@maxymyllyon I really agree, BUT there are SOME CGI effects i didn't mind, if not liked. So, for the most part, I don't MIND the changes, but some of them, just... ughhh. HAN SHOOTS FIRST, LUCAS! YOU DUMBASS!
Lucas is obsessed with changes and adding more CGI rubbish for no reason , just to enhance the special effects and realism . At the end of the day, the movies are becoming cartoons . I hate CGI
Am I the only one that thinks that these "enhancements" look really cheap and not worth the cost of shelling out for a whole new box set of the same films that we've had for around 35 years? I mean c'mon, we bought the first remakes and the only major difference was that they had replaced Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen! So unless they've replaced Hayden Christensen with Sebastian Shaw as it should have been in the first place, I'm not even going to consider getting this new remake.
Is it just me or are the new lightsabres about 10 times less powerful than you can possibly imagine - they don't look anything like as good and must have taken days to change around all the movement. Surprised there isn't much comment about this change. The extra characters and people walking across screen in the spaceport are also shocking. Some good improvements, if only Lucas was sensible and restricted use of CGI to dark scenes and extra detailing.
I'm so glad Georges didn't cut the stormtrooper blooper in the BD edition. I was expecting to see new cgi erasing it! I wonder what he is gonna change in the 2020 edition.
Star Wars Epospde IV: Ultimate Special Edition, Never before scene footage, new CGI crap, BLUE RAY!!! The Quest For More Mon..... I mean A New Hope!!!
If Mos Eisley is in a valley, then why don't we see the surounding mountains when they are in the city? Oh wait, they will be in the next remake whe Lucas needs more money.
Changes to enhance the quality are acceptable but worth discussing. I mean: where does it end? Are they gonna replace King Kong in the old movie with a CGI-Kong? So there are some FX in the old SW-Movies that don't look perfect - so what? Changes that alter the narration and characters are absolutely not acceptable. I liked Han BECAUSE he shot first! Vader crying "no" when Luke jumps off the platform? Vader always was a creepy char BECAUSE he obviously didn't care much if Luke lives or dies!
well it is his movie not ours so just let him do the changes if he wants too long you know know how the first series :o but i don't really see why he changes it lot but i guess he just don't like how the first ones were made and just want change some minor things :o
Thanks to George Lucas I have never been able to watch the original theatrical release of the Trilogy. I can understand making changes to the digital restoration i.e. Colour timing and sound enhancement, as detail is lost from Film, to 4K scan, to DVD. But most these changes are ridiculously gratuitous and unnecessary. "Close the blast doors" is nice and humorous but additional CGI is horrifically unrealistic and unfaithful.
@diby1 They are on DVD, but they are from a shitty transfer. Sucks too, since cleaning up the films is all us OT fans want. I guess they don't want my money?
GEORGE LUCAS HAS RUINED A MASTER PIECE FOR GOOD . ALL THIS CGI EFFECTS AND CHANGES ARE NOT ENHANCING THE MOVIES ? THEY ARE JUST TURNING EVERYTHING INTO A BIG CARTOON. I CAN´T WAIT TO SEE THE 3D VERSION. IN A COUPLE OF YEARS- ALL THE SHIPS, BACKGROUNDS AND CHARACTERS WILL BE CGI - AVATAR TECHNOLOGY . THANK YOU GEORGE FOR FUCKING UP A CLASSIC
I'm not the biggest stars wars fan, and I was too young to understand/appreciate the movies when I did see them. But this added CGI IS DISGUSTING! The added audio and stuff, to me at least, is not a big deal. But like seriously the Mos Eisley entrance is just beyond fucked up.
What I've noticed most about these changes is the new CGI scenes actually make the film look FAR more dated than the original effects. Prime example is the Tatooine speeder scenes, the original shadow looks a bit dodgey and blurry, but that suits it because the setting is so hot (being in a desert), and it makes the whole thing look more gritty. The new CGI scenes just make you think "Oh this was done in the 90s".
@PDram yes 90s- like Phantom Menace for example. It has that 'look' that early CGI films from that time looked, a look that has aged far more rapidly than those of the original trilogy; hence why it has, ironically, aged a film far more radically than it was aging before. Look at it like plastic surgery...
@ebag10 Why don't they give people the original movies on blu ray!? Nobody likes your cgi bullshit George, adding modern effects into classic films doesn't make them better...
good job but you'd probably be better off with the dissolves being much shorter. It looks disorienting to see two clips superimposed together for that long.
Im sorry guys but i was born in 1995 and razed watching the 1997 version. The 1977 version for its time was good but to me it looks so chezzy compared to the other one. Don't hate on me :(
This proves it! Star Wars should be taken away from George Lucas.
None of those changes were necessary!! I don't care about the effects! That's not what these movies about anyway! Jesus. George is fucking lost! He's insane!
i rememeber seeing the Gredo shooting first scene before seeing the original (im young) and i could tell there was something wrong with it....it looked so choppy and bad
I don't mind the FX changes (most of them benefit the movie). What I loathe are changes to the narrative (Greedo shooting first, More Vader "Noooos" in the bluray). Those are just arbitrary and meaningless tinkering (not to mention detrimental to character arcs and common sense).
I'm in the minority in that I like most the changes for the 2004 version. The only ones I don't like are Greedo shooting first, the praxis ring around the Alderaan explosion, the missing impact blasts on the Death Star guards, and the Ronto obscuring the screen in Mos Eisley. And the miscoloured lightsabres, of course, but that's a remastering error and not an actual change.
Most of the Blu-Ray changes are sickening, though.
the new additions are awful and even the technical 'enhancements' ruin it, because other parts of the film still look old. It's jarring to see all that CG along with the dated sets and costumes, it just robs the films of their charm.
George Lucas is an idiot.

Lucas is so obsessed with cramming the screen with shit, its proof the guy doesn't have a clue about staging and composition, did he have anything to do with Star Wars at all? or did talented people make the movie and he took the credit?
InglebertHumperdink1 3 months ago
@InglebertHumperdink1

The wolfman slowly lowering his cup after the cut is a far more memorable visual than the re-do and is actually a bit frightening.

"Close the blast doors!"

@maxymyllyon I really agree, BUT there are SOME CGI effects i didn't mind, if not liked. So, for the most part, I don't MIND the changes, but some of them, just... ughhh. HAN SHOOTS FIRST, LUCAS! YOU DUMBASS!
UnknownGodzillaFan1 4 months ago
Lucas is obsessed with changes and adding more CGI rubbish for no reason , just to enhance the special effects and realism . At the end of the day, the movies are becoming cartoons . I hate CGI
DBNIGHT 5 months ago
Am I the only one that thinks that these "enhancements" look really cheap and not worth the cost of shelling out for a whole new box set of the same films that we've had for around 35 years? I mean c'mon, we bought the first remakes and the only major difference was that they had replaced Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen! So unless they've replaced Hayden Christensen with Sebastian Shaw as it should have been in the first place, I'm not even going to consider getting this new remake.
ACJP89 5 months ago
Is it just me or are the new lightsabres about 10 times less powerful than you can possibly imagine - they don't look anything like as good and must have taken days to change around all the movement. Surprised there isn't much comment about this change. The extra characters and people walking across screen in the spaceport are also shocking. Some good improvements, if only Lucas was sensible and restricted use of CGI to dark scenes and extra detailing.
SaintJCD 5 months ago
I'm so glad Georges didn't cut the stormtrooper blooper in the BD edition. I was expecting to see new cgi erasing it! I wonder what he is gonna change in the 2020 edition.

The 1977 release didn't have "A New Hope" on it, that was the 1981 re-release and subsequent home videos that were derived from it.

DirtyHarryFan88 5 months ago
Thanks to George Lucas I have never been able to watch the original theatrical release of the Trilogy. I can understand making changes to the digital restoration i.e. Colour timing and sound enhancement, as detail is lost from Film, to 4K scan, to DVD. But most these changes are ridiculously gratuitous and unnecessary. "Close the blast doors" is nice and humorous but additional CGI is horrifically unrealistic and unfaithful.
P.S. You missed Jabba the Hut.

DRUNKENRAMBLE 5 months ago
What I've noticed most about these changes is the new CGI scenes actually make the film look FAR more dated than the original effects. Prime example is the Tatooine speeder scenes, the original shadow looks a bit dodgey and blurry, but that suits it because the setting is so hot (being in a desert), and it makes the whole thing look more gritty. The new CGI scenes just make you think "Oh this was done in the 90s".
ebag10 5 months ago 14
@ebag10 lol 90's?
PDram 5 months ago
@PDram yes 90s- like Phantom Menace for example. It has that 'look' that early CGI films from that time looked, a look that has aged far more rapidly than those of the original trilogy; hence why it has, ironically, aged a film far more radically than it was aging before. Look at it like plastic surgery...
ebag10 5 months ago
@ebag10 Why don't they give people the original movies on blu ray!? Nobody likes your cgi bullshit George, adding modern effects into classic films doesn't make them better...

HoodlumFamily 6 months ago
I don't mind the FX changes (most of them benefit the movie). What I loathe are changes to the narrative (Greedo shooting first, More Vader "Noooos" in the bluray). Those are just arbitrary and meaningless tinkering (not to mention detrimental to character arcs and common sense).
sebulia1 6 months ago 2
I'm in the minority in that I like most the changes for the 2004 version. The only ones I don't like are Greedo shooting first, the praxis ring around the Alderaan explosion, the missing impact blasts on the Death Star guards, and the Ronto obscuring the screen in Mos Eisley. And the miscoloured lightsabres, of course, but that's a remastering error and not an actual change.
Most of the Blu-Ray changes are sickening, though.
TheUnbreakableOtaku 6 months ago
this is the stupid special edition.
daneparsonslf 6 months ago
the new additions are awful and even the technical 'enhancements' ruin it, because other parts of the film still look old. It's jarring to see all that CG along with the dated sets and costumes, it just robs the films of their charm.
