we lived in picher we were the first part of picher to get hit when the sirens went off it was to late it was allready coming over th e largets chat pile two blocks away we ran across the street to a celler an got in it went right over us ripping the celler door open,we seen the in side of the tornado and there was no sound at all only pressure in your ear in the middle of the tornado then as the eye passed it grew loud agin and violently shook your whole body.when we emerged 3 mins. later there
The tornadoe hit us to fast they didnt have time to sound them it happend so fast ..Im terrified of storms now it was scary cause i spending the night with my friend and her house was destroyed by this tornadoe
And I just want to say, to everyone claiming Picher had 5 minutes warning? Absolutely not. These people had nearly no warning. I finally heard sirens right as it was happening.
I can't believe it's been nearly a year since this happened. This devastated so many lives and I just can't believe it happened. I think the death count was 11 people. There was a church that came down from kansas to protest the funerals claiming that "God sent these tornados to Picher as a punishment for the sin around here." It was disgusting. Do you realize what people around here who attended those funerals felt like after seeing that the funeral of LOVED ONES were being protested?
My heart pounds just watching this....... how horrifying for all that were involved. I live in Grove and just the sirens and darkness terrified me...... God bless you all.....
ok a few things I have to say. This is for "gregg": we had like 2 MINUTES warning, not 25. Obviously if we had 25 MINUTES warning we would not have stayed in the house that collapsed on us and drug us across the yard. And to whoever posted this: I heard the girl LAUGHING in the background.. This tornado nearly killed several of my family members, including my 2 and 5 yr old little girls who still have freaking nightmares. SO does anyone want to explain to me what is so FUNNY about that?
I visited Picher a few days ago (a few weeks after this storm) and the town is devastated. A whole neighborhood was pretty much wiped off the map. You can see plenty of footage just by typing Picher Tornado here at Youtube. This was a strong F4, easily. It uprooted enormous trees, moved houses off of foundations, and literally removed a gas station. Not sure what more would have been needed to make it an F5.
Will the tornado that was in picher was an F4 some say that it might have been an F5 in some areas. I live here look it up on the computer the diff from F3 to F4 then tell me it was an F3 ok
well, according to the NWS damage survey team it was an F4, but the tornado looked to reach its maximum intensity east of Picher, but that is by appearence only and not by damage, which is really the only thing they can use to judge tornado strength...
I didn't hear sirens but I wasn't listening either, my grandma's sister called, 5 mins later our cousins went on the porch, 2 seconds later they ran in and said to take cover, it went right over the house -flattened it... There may have been sirens but we only knew about the warning for around 10 mins. It all happened so fast...
no they didn't, all the news reports ive been watching are saying they had little to no warning. something about the warning horns being down or broken.
I was wondering why picher had so little warning? Did none of the chasers call it in to the authorities letting them know it was on the ground so they could warn people?
The sirens went off in Joplin Before it hit Picher. The media here said they had about a 10Min warning. The Tornando was a F3 in Picher, Then F4 in MO. Most of the people that were killed South of Joplin were in Cars.
Why is there so much traffic on a road impacted by such a severe storm? A mile off and that twister would be ON the road. You can't drive in that.
Oh, and it's an EF4, not an F4.

MrKev252008 1 year ago
Ya, I would have to say it packed winds of 190 - 200 MPH, the highest wind peak of an EF4 tornado.

This video is haunting for me. A very good friend of mine was killed in this exact tornado. It's just... ugh.

Generally if house are swept off theri foundations it would indicate anf F5 or EF5 but the houses might not have been well built.
