Throughout the middle ages, Scot could refer to people of Ireland or Scotland. Even the Uillean Pipes are just another Scottish set of Pipes, they were called 'Union Pipes' - a Englishman from London took the Scottish pipes and created a softer variation of them in 1880 to celebrate the union between Scotland, England and Ireland, it was later taken by Irish Republicans in the early 1900's, they came from Scotland, along with Tartan.

Highland bagpipes were originally Irish warpipes, which were in Ireland long before they were in Scotland. The Scots take credit for the bagpipes because bagpipes became extinct in Ireland due to England outlawing them for centuries in Ireland. @ifonlyicouldstop Wrong! They're Scottish traditions, the Irish started to use Scottish things in the late 1800's with the emergence of Celt Romantism. Tartan is a pure Scottish thing, the Scottish put their foot down with the Tartan being used by the Irish after Queen Victoria suggested having Irish soldiers use the Kilt for military purposes that's why the Irish had the saffron Kilt only with plain colours.

The Brits can be used to describe the Scots, N.Irish & Welsh too, not just English.
