  • They did it justice here, and that's something considering Joy Division's godlike status. Dead crowd, but, I suppose that's actually fitting with this cover lol.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOO WANNEER WAREN ZE OP LOWLANDS ): wss toen ik daar nog te jong voor was om te gaan. ):

  • I looked forward to listening to this cover but at the end of the day it is nothing special....Distillers lack explosiveness in their sound(at least in this performance) which is needed to bring off such a song....Whole band lacks tightness and is playing lazily. Finally, I don't really think we can make any comparison between Ian Curtis and this lady....like comparing God to a slug I'm afraid...

  • how many people in the crowd did recognized this :3 lol

  • is PUNK ROCK just PUNk fuck

  • great cover!

  • 18 persons have lost love

  • But can she cook.

  • wow what I would give to be there!

  • damn , action starts at 3:05 i think

  • It was good of them to do this. It's always good to know that young people are up on their Joy Division.

  • This is hella cool! Joy Division is one of my favorite bands and The Distillers are one of my favorite bands and their redoing one of there songs!:D

  • It's a copy, not a cover. Pretty pointless...

  • Cool, never heard of the band, but great cover!

  • @Lothenon Joy Division is important to know of in rock history. They are legend and are now know as New Order. I would consider them one of the goth or underground grampas even though they can also be categorized as punk. They're famous, ask someone that was born in the seventies, if I say anymore about Joydivision or the lead singer -older fans might eat my head so yeah...

  • @lollynutz : I meant the Distillers... I know pretty well who Joy Division are :)

  • her voice fits this song so perfectly the way they played it.

  • andy was having a really good time :p

  • @tjulen7

    emo yeah?

oh i love how every bloody thing today is labeled emo. go listen to fugazi or rights of spring, thats emo!!

  • @BaronessStrange

Even Fugazi hated the term emocore, lol

  • @clayrapiejko

i know.... but still its more or less where it originated and it has nothing to do with what is understood by the term 'emo' today, thats all i wanted to point out ;-)

  • @clayrapiejko yeah and robert smith hated too the term goth, but, facts.

  • @BaronessStrange JEP! so true!

  • @BaronessStrange fugazi are not emo there punk and if you cant tell the difference between punk and emo you obviously don't listen to much punk fugazi have been going since the 80s and they sound nothing like emo

  • @tjulen7 punk rock. dickweed

    :)

  • @tjulen7 dude, go look up the distillers, every web page ou come across will say Punk or Punk Rock band from LA. do you know why it says that, cause their a punk band!

    not emo dickweed

  • @tjulen7 you don't know your music at all pal these are a punk band not emo do your history

  • and how good is it that they wanna do JD !!! :)

  • this is actually one of the better covers i've seen of this song. the drummer messes up the beginning but the bassist brings it together. brody's voice works because of her lower register. i'm not a distillers fan but this is pretty dope.

  • CORONA <3

  • brody is hot how could you mistake her for a guy

  • I prefer the Reading's version

  • mee too... it has more kind of life to it

  • Enough beer there Tony. :)

  • so sic luv it

  • boring

  • Brody is amazing

  • Veeeerry nice! It gave me chills.

  • Fucking Incredible!! God Bless you Ian Curtis!! JD were way ahead of their time.. my god!!! - Incredible Intro here.. very nice job!! thx for posting.. (not a big cover guy.. but this is excellent! I wonder how many in the crowd realize what they are listening too! cheers!

  • @silverglobe not many i bet

  • MY Favourite Joy Division song, by one of my favourite bands. Holy Shit, how did i not find this sooner

  • molto bravi. up from chiasso

  • lowlands is nice

    this cover is okay

  • @BRUNZWORX

well maybe its different because they are a different band.... whats the sense in doing a cover if its a 1 to one copy of the original band image, sound and attitude?? thats not covering thats copying.

and where do you find the distillers caught up with their looks? she's wearing jeans and a fucking shirt mate.

  • wow...nice fucking cover!

its rare that bands so popular like

this one or any band at all...remember

or cover joy division's songs...most of

the ppl dont even remember them =S

n that sucks...joy division didnt last long

but it was a fucking cool band =)

  • Amen to that!!

  • amen!! =D

  • LOL

  • xDDDDD

  • A worthy tribute. :) I dig it.

  • I have to say, the Reading one is much better.

  • The intro is so long because the drummer keeps entering on the wrong beat. He kind of gets it the first time, screws it up the second time and throws the bassist off, then misses it the third time but keeps going anyway. Embarrassing!

  • maybe he was drunk

  • Damn, that was amazing. I miss this Brody.

  • Wow, not bad at all. I'm a big fan of JD, but this a great cover. NICE...

  • I hate when people who say that they hate a band get on just to talk shit...like seriosly if you don't like the damn thing and you are goin to talk shit then just don't watch...I personally love The Distillers and Brody is my idol. This cover is amazing and I think they did very good!

  • That was ok 'til Brody starts singing. She's a good singer, but not for Joy Division.

  • better than the horrors by miles

  • LCD Soundsystem's cover blows this one away.

  • you are joking... right?

  • brody is soooo wasted ´... hahaa..

  • Pretty dam good once they got started.

  • The only thing is that the intro is way too long...but I still Like this cover... CHEERS!" 10/10

  • you suck

  • No... Just No...

  • Brody Was MY wife first :)

  • yeah, great song to cover!!!

  • I wan't to marry brody<33

  • I love Joy Division. I like Distillers. I don't like this cover.

  • i love so much this fucking cover

brody is one of the best woman in rock

  • Also I hope they catch the Rat-Bastard Low Life Scum that stole Ian's Headstone and boil the motherfucker in hot oil!!!!!!!

  • Sorry, my last comment was meant as a reply to NickDrakeVirtuoso.

  • It certainly is not beder for Ian Curtis & Joy Division to be forgotten. Definitely remembered for all the good reasons & the great music they made & the lasting impression they've left in music history. You ask any kid who the killers r, they'll tell you. but that same kid prolly has no klu who Joy Division was. A shame perhaps, but maybe it's for the beder. Joy Division isn't for everyone. If it wasn't for JD there wouldn't be a lot of music that there is tday. Long live Joy Division! RIP Ian

  • How are The Distillers posers??? Dipshit!

  • Oh and for those idiots who comment about Ian's death with little or no knowledge about it, he was a genuinely tortured young man. Throw in a young baby, unhappy marriage, no money and a debilitating illness amongst other things, and you might understand why his death is considered such a tragedy. At least the likes of Cobain didn't have to worry about paying the rent. . .

  • You really have to explain it to some ppl. Joy Division were probably on the verge of global fame, but that doesn't change the fact that you can hear their influence in a lot of music today. Ever hear of Velvet Underground? Not a 'popular' group at the time, and they sold very few records, but it was said that every person that bought one started their own band. That's the kind of influence JD have had. Could you say the same, for example, about Nirvana or Coldplay?

  • nirvana, yes. coldplay, no.

  • what year is this from

  • Go to the distillers Brody *-*

  • im back.

as an example if you have heard lcd soundsystems cover of no love lost? craptacular would be over-rating it!!!

the distillers do a fine job.

  • rule number 302 of music

dont go near anything by ian curtis, unless you're bernard sumner, steven morris or peter hook.

  • nick

part of the legacy of ian & joy division is for other bands to do covers. to me this helps introduce the band to new fans. there will never be another joy division! in the space of about 18 months joy division attained artistic heights that other bands spend years trying to reach without coming close. this is the best cover i have heard of a very early jd song.

  • as much as i understand how the distillers would like to put their style of music into this song, its difficult for people to really get into joy division; if someone hears a cover, like the fall out boy one of love will tear us apart...

they'll get the wrong idea about the atmosphere, meaning and power behind ian curtis' lyrics and his delivery.

  • If new bands didn't cover old bands, younger generations would eventually forget about them altogether. Don't take it as an offense to the purism of the song -- a cover, or even a reinterpretation, takes nothing away from the original; instead, take heart that people who might otherwise have never heard this song might hear it now from one band and think to learn more about Joy Divison and Ian Curtis.

  • i take your point; yet i feel the meaningful integrity of the song is lost. Ian Curtis is one of my biggest heroes, and whilst brody dalle is admittedly an excellent punk singer, this cover comes across slightly brash, although retaining the punk feel of the original.

  • That is inevitable, I'm afraid. Sic transit gloria mundi and all that; purism inevitably loses its integrity with the march of time.

So I think the defining question is: is it better for someone like Ian Curtis to be forgotten, or for his remembrance to be passed on through the (mis-)interpretation of others?

Hey, at least we live in an age of information; future generations will (hopefully!) be able to return to the "pure" Ian Curis forever, as long as they go out of their way to find it!

  • Totally understand your reasoning. Fallout Boy is a good example of a bad cover, as is The Killers,N.I.N.,Galaxy 500 and so on. The key here is if I am interested in a song I hear that is a cover I will search out the original and give it a listen. To me The Distillers is an example of a good cover, as is Ocaso's cover of Atmosphere. There will never be another JD but I do see covers as a tribute to Ian and the boys!

  • thats a great view to have, but its often hard to find out what songs are covers. time and time again ive seen people talking about how great love will tear us apart is, and how pete wentz is such a great songwriter. Im not feeling that one, to be honest, and only if people are dedicated and care about the depth and backround of music they listen too, like yourself, then will good music be truly recognised, and the characters within it.

  • True. To me Fallout Boy is just another pop boy band, catchy tunes but no depth. Seems to be all there is these days! I must be getting to be an old fart!! I was 19 when Unknown Pleasures was released, my biggest regret is never seeing a live show. I can only envy folks who have. Big sigh!!! Its been nice chatting with someone with some true sense about music NickDrakeVirtuoso.

  • i think my biggest musical problem is the fact ive only just turned 16.

im fed up of my dad telling me how cheap it was to see the who, led zep, joy div, the rolling stones etc etc etc; all the good bands.

the best we can do today is embarassing, to be quite honest.

and thank you for the compliment, i have enjoyed our small conversation :)

  • There is no age limit on true musical appreciation! Your dad is right, it was cheaper then but we had to deal with something called Disco. I shudder to think about it! As to today, there are some diamonds in the coal field. To name just a few - Bright Eyes, A.F.I., Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and some, just some of John Mayer. If you haven't heard them check em out, if you have give another listen and listen to the lyrics.

  • disco :|

there are a few good bands in there, i agree, but too many musicians forget that what they actually do is make music. Caught up in what they think the "rock and roll star" should do, the music does kinda suffer. Its all about the attitude.

  • your point is right but your evidence isnt. music is shit now because no-one wants to be good anymore. people want to be little indie shitheads and just make people dance. the art and feeling has been vacant in music for sometime now and it just appears bands who want to make art dont get the chance to become big because bands tht lots of people will like, like fuckin kaiser cheifs are getting big.

  • Everything she does is amazing, this cover is an example of it.

  • i love her voice

  • I read all the negative comments and expected something truly horrible, but this was great!

I guess it's a matter of taste for Brody Dalle's voice but the instrumentals were down perfectly.

Oh and her ass is magnificent.

  • I agree, murdockqotsa.

I think this is a kickass cover. I'm a big Distillers fan and an even bigger Joy Division fan. I honestly think this is a hard song to fuck up, anyhow. And I love it :D

  • one of the best covers ever.

  • very good version

the distillers was a very good band

  • This is brilliant :)

  • miss that voice so much... wish the distillers didn't split up..

  • aceptable cover solo k joy es joy!!!!

  • Hard for the people there to concentrate on the song when they can see Brodys butt for that long lol

  • what?! How could u h8 Brodys voice?!

    *tear* I <3 YOU BRODY!!!

  • they kill the dynamic of the intro by dragging it out too long..

  • brody's ass..... :)

  • shes from melbourne australia

  • Brody Dale is actually not American, she's an Aussie... not sure about the rest of the band.

  • Americans need to keep there hands off Joy Division.

  • lmao I hate her voice, but this was actually an awesome cover

  • i fucking love her voice.

it's not the female screamo shit and it's not the avril lavigne i-wish-i-was-punk voice.

it's a hardcore bark voice that most guys wish they could muster.

  • I'm feel very very sorry for myself right now, I just listened to this entire song. I guess they have just as much right as anyone else to try to cover Joy Division though. Terrible over all.

  • rad as fucking fuck

  • not bad. not good either.she sounds like courtney love in hole(mediocre band)

  • hole rules...was a great band...& the distillers too

  • nice butt^^.....great song...live joy division

  • Que hijos de puta; como joden a los clásicos... Incluso peor que la versión de LCD Soundsystem que ya es decir... Ian Curtis debe estar revolviéndose en su tumba...

  • Terrible. Adds nothing.

  • brilliant cover

  • don't like the distillers, but joy division gotta be one of the most important bands of all time.

  • i think the reason the intro seemed too long was because the drummer screwed up and didn't know when to come in.

  • I think the fact that some band is still covering JD songs 30 years later speaks volumes

  • Yeah definately... It doesn't really add to the song imo, is good to hear a JD song though, always

  • wtf!!??

  • This is intro is way to long, and the bassline has been made dead boring.

  • Theres a big intro to this song. Product placement for Corona too I think

  • totally aggree on the product placement. i always see brody drinking corona in photos. they probably give the distillers free booze.

  • joy division were a great band.. you non-knowing fools, ah well../ enjoi the foo fighters..

  • you are right!

  • Oh ye of little brain.

buy the albums and listen to them.

No band, I repeat, no band have put out better music than the Joy Division.

  • brody's voice is just AMAZING. one of a kind

  • The audio is fucking terrible!

  • oldphoque, you're fucking pathetic and make no sense

  • Look, This is a great song and a great cover. But, I just don`t think Joy Division is all that great and highly overrated. Nostalgia keeps them alive. I just won`t kiss the ass of a guy who killed himself for no reason. Cobain is more entitled to the circle jerk than this guy! Defend your band all you can and will amount to nothing. That`s how it is.

  • he killed himself because he had dibilitating epilepsy! not for no reason.

  • Now, that is a factoid I can appreciate. I did not know that and changes things a little. Not alot. Everything I read about his death failed to mention that. I did not see the indie film based on him. Did it include that bit of info?

  • I'm not sure as I have yet to see it. I think in a trailer I saw for it there was a scene of him having a seizure.

  • I FUCKING HATE YOU oldphoque STOP LIVING FOR MEDIOCRE BANDS LIKE JOPLIN AND LENNON(over rated) AND HENDRIX THE REASON WHY YOU DONT GET JD IS BECAUSE YOURE A CLICHE PRICK WHO HAS NOT ONE EAR TO UNDERGROUND MUSIC!PS COBAIN WAS AN AVID FAN JOY DIVISION!

  • I don`t care. Stiv Bators, after getting hit by a car and dying days after being released from the hospital is more noteworthy than any suicide. Many people liked Joy Division. I do. I just don`t get the pedistal treatment. Those names I threw out there were just Icons everyone knows and can relate to. PS, Darby Crash was another idiot.

  • Many people who have epilepsy don't kill themselves. That's a pretty crappy reason you have there. He killed himself because he was depressive, it's that simple. Depression is not something light, it can be very severe and can ruin ones life.

  • and why do you think he was depressed...? because he had debilitating epilepsy and it was keeping him from doing the things he wanted to do.

  • I don't know him personally, so I really don't know what he was thinking, but if really he took his life away just because of epilepsy, than that's pretty a weak excuse. I think that his love affair, his artistic and sensitive nature, his health problem and his medication caused the depression, not just epilepsy.

  • Really? Do you think it is even sane to imortalise stars who off themselves or OD? Lennon died a tragic death and was always a good person. Darby Crash, Sid Vicious, Michael Hutchence? Cobain, Iffy. Hendrix, Joplin, Elvis and Morrison I get. They were accidental od`s and way more influential. Holding a candle for a one hit wonder who offed himself is Pathetic.

  • One hit wonders? Two albums in the Rolling Stone top 100 albums of all time, three songs (Atmosphere, Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart) in the top 20 singles ever voted by John Peel listeners, two films about Curtis explicitly, countless documentaries, books, live bootlegs and unofficial releases. Get your facts straight.

  • Phew! but nice hair

  • the only good cover i have herd of no love lost is the horrors. they should leave this song alone

  • Joy division <3

  • Brody Dalle said that the Distiller's aren't over, she's just taking a break from them to concentrate on something different.. i.e. having a baby, and Spinnerette.

But she said that the Distiller's are on hiatus because 2 of the members left, and she was pregnant, so she didn't really have a choice, but they're not over for good, she's just having a break from them.

  • Besides, Ian was full of heroin anyway. So why can't she be?

  • I've never heard that before. What's your source for saying that?

  • No he wasn't

  • You've no evidence to support that. No one has ever said Ian Curtis even used Heroin, let alone being some kind of addict.

  • You can repaint them, but not remake them.

  • hence, a cover.

  • She's hot.

  • ERGH, please. This is shocking.
