@paulhunter123 - The engine runs smoother, it is done at the factory with a tolerance of plus/minus 10 grams. I balance to plus/minus half a gram, or better. Call me about the cost.
@wea619 - Please restate your question, I don't understand 'does the easy to high rev..' My crystal ball is a bit cloudy today to try and figure out what you are asking?!?!?!
@pantherxx010 - If you are asking about the flywheel.flex plate - yes. Some engines are externally balanced (weights outside the engine - flywheel/flexplate dampener. Like this 502, I had to install everything that was mounted to the crank in order to balance the assembly.
Those weights on the crank are the same weight as the total piston+rod combination, next step is to fit the clutch pressure plate and balance the assembly again, removing weight from the pressure plate only to restore the balance.
@rwdford 50% because a counterbalanced crank is all babbling theory. The original intent is a 100 freakin years old meant for no more than 1800 rpm. (A diesel can do ok with it)Notice the shared rod journals are leaving rods scraping each other in different directions... it is a primitive invention long gone over due for extinction in the gas world. Machinists are die hards and keep trying to balance anyway...Benz crank v8 anybody?
Great video as always thanks for sharing!

what are the benefits of a crank balance, why is it not done at the factory? how much does it cost

@paulhunter123 , if you change rods or pistons then maybe need it done..

what is the funcion of the "weights" in the balancing process ? shouldnt be enough to balance withought the weights? thanks man... love your vids
tiagobaracho 2 months ago
@tiagobaracho - Which weights? 'counter' or 'bob' weights?
fiatnutz 2 months ago
@fiatnutz i think he means the 'bob' weights
BrickMuffin 2 months ago
@fiatnutz oh never mind, you already answered that
BrickMuffin 2 months ago
@fiatnutz the weights you attach where the connection rod would be...
If i spin a cranckshaft without this weights it couldn´t be balanced ?
Thanks

hi,after balancing the crankshaft, does the easy to high rev the engine & eliminates vibration too?tq

@fiatnutz owh sorry, i mean does the engine easy to high rev (8k rpm and above) & eliminates vibration? tq
wea619 2 months ago
@wea619 - The engine will rev more freely and without vibration. The revs are kind of controlled by the camshaft, etc.

Does a 4 cyl engine need those "weights" in rod journals?? Do you need to polish the journals witch run on the balancer after the balancing proces??
rojeremy 7 months ago
@rojeremy - No and yes I do polish after balancing.

can you balance a crankshaft up to 10k rpm?
chr1s88blue 1 year ago
@chr1s88blue - No, and I don't know of anyone that spins cranks that high.
fiatnutz 1 year ago
@chr1s88blue - Having all the bolts in place does not effect balance when tow diametrically opposed bolts are used. Good question.
fiatnutz 1 year ago
ok john is this is same way to balancing to both clutch tranny and automatic tranny?

@fiatnutz if balancing , shouldnt there be all the bolts on the flywheel?

What are profits of this operation? Excluding of course lowered vibrations. Extended lifespan of engine and higher mpg?

scary to watch something that weighs as much as a crank spin as fast as it does cool video thanks for sharning

those engines still arent done??
are the parts still on the floor in the assembly room?
:D

Hello,
How you know, how much to drill?
Alexiskayak 1 year ago
@Alexiskayak - I have a program in the computer to calculate how much to remove, but you still have to use experience as you guide.

John what are those weight you put on?
pantherxx010 1 year ago
@pantherxx010
Those weights on the crank are the same weight as the total piston+rod combination, next step is to fit the clutch pressure plate and balance the assembly again, removing weight from the pressure plate only to restore the balance.

@rwdford - The "bob weights" represent 50% of the total rod & piston weight
fiatnutz 1 year ago
@fiatnutz
That's interesting, I didn't know that, why use 50% of the total weight?

@fiatnutz
Is it because of the relatively complex reciprocating + circular motion of the rods + the more simple reciprocating motion of the pistons?
rwdford 1 year ago
TO perform this the customer should send you the intended flywheel and harmonic balancer along with their crank?
zapwatt 1 year ago
@zapwatt - Yes, all parts of the rotating assembly.
