The pigeon on my balcony used to try and do this, but the sparrows would always get away, leaving a feather in his beak. He doesn't do it anymore, though, since a more dominant pigeon arrived which calmed him down.

It is not unheard of birds eating other birds, pigeons have long been eaten by crows, seagulls, and even pelicans. Usually if its a bird commonly encountered by the predator, the predator will try to and usually succed in catching and eating it.

I can report seeing the same thing in abq new mexico back in 1993. Only in the end our road runner ate the sparrow whole. Strangest thing I ever saw.
