This sounds better played in a minor key, it is sad, a funeral march, always sad. I performed this in front of a large audience and brought tears to peoples eyes, as they mourned.
Its a bad recording with lots of distortion which spoils the interpretation. Not sure what to make of the wrong note, I have noticed Cortots interpretations are not always loyal to the text but the E natural does not sound right at all. Maybe this is because I have played and listened to this piece too many times
It is in your eyes, not in mine. You sound like you live for the people rather than being yourself and doing what you want, You sad! Like all the rest, sad and discarded from individual thought. You go along with times and what they say. Sad!
Great post. i loved the 1st pic of him! I have the origanal one hanging on my studio wall! You must have gotten it from my geocities site about Cortot! Glad to see it served you well. Keep posting Cortot!!!!!1
I don't like Cortot's interpretation of this prelude because of awful accents on several chords! 4th chord Bar 1 , 2 , 9 , 10 have awful accents ; Cortot uses in those bars a different Time Signature; In bar 11 , 12 I miss an expressive crescendo.
Flat before last crotchet E' in Bar 3 absent in sources, but probably unintended, as it was written in by Chopin into the copy of his pupel J. Stirling. Cortot plays E natural and that is wrong. 2nd Chord bar 3 (with E natural) has dominant funcion to F Chord!
What a cruel dilemma for the conscientious concert performer !

I don't think the speed here is too fast. I'm just the opposite of most people-it sounds better to me when not played so extremely slow.

Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen a picture of Cortot. Crazy looking bugger, wasn't he!

Yes, he would never have had a career nowadays purely because of his looks; it just shows what a superficial world we now live in.

@rabengeraun This is entirely false.

@Scriabin28 yeah he was a funny looking man but his playing is great and that's all that matters now.

the beginning sounded too fast for me, did you feel the same?

yep... definately.. i play it two thirds of the speed! it leveled off though as the dynamic decreased later on :))

Just right; as Cortot always seemed to be in Chopin.
