Unfortunately this protest of Latvian people was turned into Russian cause, the reason why many later turned back on these events. Very true, here in Croatia it´s similar, and we even aren´t in the EU, many people lived on a higher standard than they could really afford from "kartica" (credit card debt - if one was empty they took another credit), now after credit crisis banks don´t give much credits anymore and many are getting in trouble now and wonder why...

Predictably, today the ruling coalition is condemning the opposition party, who organised the rally, even though it is the minister of interior affairs who should have brought police reinforcements sooner. So it looks like the authorities were either unready or willing to let some damage occur (to be able to put opposition to blame).

So you watched a movie with proofs that are considered unreliable, and you believed it. That movie is also corrupt, don't you think so? It's very naive to believe such movie could present the REAL truth and avoid being turned down by the powerful government. I'm not defending any political system or anything, but i'm just against sensible contact with the ideas expressed in zeitgeist movies. In my opinion, it should only make your point of view wider, but not make you believe the facts.

This is what happens, when a government joins the EU, gets tons of money, and instead of using it wisely, lets its people live an illusion for about 3 years. I was born in Riga, and go there every year for the summer holidays. After LV has joined the EU, suddenly, everyone drove Mercedes, Bentley, BMW, bought huge "castle"- like housesand such stuff. And now they pay the price for this "economical boom". No money no friends. Who will help you know? Georgia? Ukrain? Poland?

Robbe19.Luxury cars were here before. Just keep your mouth shut if you don't even have a glimpse of what is going on. Those who assaulted Saeima building should be severely punished. There has been 11 criminal pursuits started so far and i truly hope that more will follow.
Those assholes shouting and demanding government discard robbing local alcohol stores and demolishing private property should get chemically CASTRATED so they wouldn't be capable of reproducing themselves!!!

OOOOOh, what do you mean with "before"? I know that they were. But it is the amount that counts. I live in Berlin, and I haven´t seen that much luxury cars, as I have seen the last two summers in Riga. And do you know what surprises me most? You defend a government, that raised the prices for food for about 300% during the years, not really raising the income, or rent of the people and then still managed to make those people get unemployed. Fuck that government, or keep YOUR mouth shut!

I don´t get your point. Do you want to tell me that the free market led you into the situation that you are in now? In Germany there is also a free market, and still the people (NOT EVERYBODY!) have jobs, and enough income. The problem is that the LV government, blinded by the smell of fast money, sold all of their companies, for example Laima to investors from abroad. In a crisis, like now, buying and selling, like LV does it, is not enough to provide people with jobs, right?

Given the competitive pressure from the construction and real estate sectors, other industries were forced to increase wages as well. This fed into increases in prices across the economy, as businesses had to compensate for the rising labor costs. Inflation, in turn, increased demands for yet higher wages, which would result in higher prices, and so on.

All this could work while more people took more loans and the foreign-owned banks were willing to pump in money from abroad. Yet surely it had to end since no-one can borrow forever. Very true, here in Croatia it´s similar, and we even aren´t in the EU, many people lived on a higher standard than they could really afford from "kartica" (credit card debt - if one was empty they took another credit), now after credit crisis banks don´t give much credits anymore and many are getting in trouble now and wonder why...

WE DONT TRUSTE THEM ANYMORE.... They have lived on our money many years, schools getting closed, price of goods is getting up and latvian national money (lats) loose it's cost... so "great"

Predictably, today the ruling coalition is condemning the opposition party, who organised the rally, even though it is the minister of interior affairs who should have brought police reinforcements sooner. So it looks like the authorities were either unready or willing to let some damage occur (to be able to put opposition to blame).
