My sister Candice was the lead singer of the Chymes...we started singing together as far back as I can remember...and we always...had a great sound. I believe Candice was 13, I was 15 and Stephanie was 16 when we cut the record. We loved singing...but...getting along was our down-fall. Eventually, it put an end to a short lived attempt to make it in the industry. Howard was a great mentor and teacher....as was Nita Garfield. Now there are only two of us left. Candice is greatly missed. :(
Hi. I just want to thank you for posting this and a few others I've found. Candy was my Aunt, and did recently pass. She is missed by many. My mother is Stephanie. I finally got a copy of the album via CD format from one of my cousins, with the album cover on it. They made it to the top 20. I firmly believe they had talent, and are still talented. They would have gone very far, had they stuck it out! I belive keeping the "gig" together was difficult (way before my time). Regardless, Thank you.
I discovered this song July 2010 on Where the Action Is LA Nuggets 1965-1968.
I've had it in my head ever since, and it's a fun song to play on the electric piano.
Thanks to this site, I discover it's got a following. And now I learn that Candy has recently passed. It is very poignant to think that I discovered her terrific vocal within weeks of her death. This is a clever tune, someone should cover it.

Candy Williams, lead singer of The Chymes, passed away on August 8th 2010 after a vigorous battle against lung cancer. Rest In Peace my dear friend. You are now a full fledged Angel. xo
Me and my friend are forming a band, and I were planning that we'd do covers of 'Quite a Reputation' and 'He's not there anymore'. I think it's such a waste that they're not played since they are so good, I think they have huge hit potential. The only problem is that I can't catch all the lyrics. I've tried to listen very hard, and I think I caught the most of the lyrics but there are some gaps. Is there anyone who's got the lyrics or has a better hearing than me?
This song is my Girls in the Garage vol.1 favorite. I simply adore it ! It's so catchy you just can't help moving to it.
You know I'm a dj here in Belgium and I played it a couple of times at parties. I made people dance to it no longer than two weeks ago. I read here that one of the Chymes happens to visit sometimes so Candy I just want to tell you this: be happy! your great song is alive and kicking :)
Had this song been released a few years before it actually was it would have undoubtedly been a big hit. It has that Shangrilas feel to it. I am a big fan of the "Nuggets" cd collection and cannot understand why this wasn't included, it really should have been. As screwed up as the music business was in those days, it's even worse now and this song is a total breath of fresh air.

It just doesn't have a strong enough hook or any hook at all for the time.
There were so many other good records much better than this that didn't make it during that time. When this was made it didn't stand much of a chance against much better material.
It was not a hit. Howard Kaylan (of the Turtles) stated it did absolutely nothing. It's just one of those garageband songs that never caught on nationally. I still like it though and it made their lead singer very happy to see it posted on the tube and that's enough for me. And I got to talk to both Howard and Mark from the Turtles when I got information about it; so it's all good.
Oh lil rascal...it was a *hit* in a few places in Calif. as I stated previously before here.(NOT) throughtout the U.S. And funny as awful as we were lil rascal...we were in the *Top* 20's on the radio there:)........
People who are not very knowledgeable of the music biz back in the day, have no clue that getting airplay regionally often did not pan out with national success. There was and still is a lot of politicing in the radio biz.
It did mean a lot to the artists that they were well received locally because it meant gigs and exposure. It was at least a stepping stone to possible bigger and better thiings.
Hmmm...I tried posting here like 6 times now to place a "link" here of the song 'Quite A Reputation" that is the song that placed us on the charts in California...this song (playing here) was on the B side. Seems it isn't accepting the link here, so I will place it on my page. I was the nic DrLuvDawg, but have since deleted it. Hope you will check out my page for the link to the REAL song (A side) that was aired on the radio and put us in the top 20's. Thank you again...Candy
Wanted to Thank You for whatever reason you had for placing our song here!!!! God Bless you sooo. And I need to correct that my sister Stephanie "Lived" in Vegas.....Thank you again. with much gratitude :)
My sisters did not enjoy it as I did, so they moved on to getting married etc. I do have a picture of us that I will try to post here on my page. I myself have a son age 28 and live in Washington State with him. The middle sis Irise, lives in Simi Valley, Cali. Older sis Steph lives in Vegas. I still sing lol...but now its just for my son,my cats,my new lil puppy, and me. When I was 17 my dad did enter me in Ms Los Angeles Beauty Pageant, and I won Ms Sherman Oaks lol thats it. ~PEACE~ Candy
It's funny I was chatting with someone on Messenger and was telling him in my teens my sisters and I made a record in the 60's and gave him our group name "The Chymes". Next thing I know he said he Googled it, and low n behold there it was. I cried, and cried and was just amazed and stunned, and no...never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to find it here on YouTube. As far as did we do any other records or performing..No, not after this song. I was the lead singer, my sisters did back-up.
Apparantly Kim Fowley the pres of Chatahoochie records had other projects on his mind; like his own career. This would have been big had it been launched nationally.
Here's to all the great girl groups from the sixties! Thanks for unearthing this relic, garageband66. It's true--they were discovered by my girlfriend and me in 1966. We produced three sides, with backing trax from the Turtles and signed the girls to Chatahoochie Records where absolutely nothing occured. They did some local TV shows and, I believe this song charted locally in some American markets. Recently, one of the girls contacted me online to say that she and her sisters were all doing fine

Hey Candy...
Somehow we need to get Quite A Reputation up online. Although it's kinda cool that your legend grows on without it. People love a mystery.

I had hoped someone from this band would surface eventually. What other tidbits of information can you give me about the group?
I understand some photos exist and am waiting for a few contacts to come through.
It's a real blast to hear from you. Did you ever think this would end up on the tube?
