Not a MIDI Controller, I bet it doesn't show up as a MIDI Controller. All it does is convert keystrokes in to midi signals which is what Ableton already does for the qwerty keys, only it doesn't do anything for the number pad, so yet this is useful it's not a midi device. More so a MAX Plugin to allow extra keystrokes to midi conversions.
lol i like how you have JUST a numpad. whered you get it? looks like itd be cool if i jus took the motherboard out and soldered some wires to new buttons
@fleischvswurst I'm not familiar with the fruity loops software but assuming there is some sort of equivalent to ableton's drumracks you can use this patch to output midi which you then select as your input in fruity loops. If you're on a mac, keep an eye on my blog as i'll be releasing a similar but more powerful tool in the next day or two.
Do you know of any software that will convert the number commands to midi commands so i can use it for FL studio? I don't think it would work with fl alone.
Went to your site, Clicked the here link and it sent me to zealousyWent to your site, Clicked the here link and it sent me here zealousydotcom/patches/keybeatz.maxpat
I dont know about you guys but it just gave me a bunch of html looking stuff
@AlexTechhh there's a link to the drum pad software above. all that does is convert the keystrokes to midi that another piece of software then reads and spits out sound. assigning samples etc depends entirely on what software you're using. i'm not familiar with traktor pro so can't help you there.
@rubanswebsite No hardware mods involved, just software. It's a max patch hosted on my site - check the link above - if you want to have a play with it.
@poopyscoopy5 yep, you could hook the keys up to any sort of switch or sensor. it won't be velocity sensitive but will work. search the ableton forum for qwerty foot controller...
@poopyscoopy5 I have seen a demo of a velocity sensitive qwerty keyboard but they're not in common production. If you want velocity sensitivity get a nanopad or something.
@harrychristner latency differs from system to system but qwerty isn't any slower than other midi devices.. i've got it down to 11ms which feels fine. if you're using ableton there's some good info in the manual about optimising your midi settings.
Hey man thats cool and if its that cheap and easy im interested!! So how exactly did you turn your calculator into a MIDI controller,,, Do you have a link to any info?
@BeProductions1000 yep, it'll work with garage band. it's jsut putting out midi so it'll work with anything. re drum pads - google diy drum trigger - cheap + easy :D
@ThugLifePr0ductions Not too familiar with virtual dj but if it doesn't have a key mapping function you could google for a qwerty to midi converter and then use the midi map function.
@zealtv I've actually just edited the patch with my own midi signals after figuring out how to use max a little bit. I see that you are using some keys to move up and down on patches and triggering them, how are you linking the midi output to do that? when I try, I get nothing because I lose focus so ableton doesn't recognize my input.
hows the latency? i know when i used to use my keyboard for the piano roll on fl it was laggy as fuck but as soon as i got a real controller it was fine...is it the same way?
@darkinertia2 latency varies from system to system. depending on whether your bottleneck's in ableton's keystroke to midi crunching or the keyboard itself this might be faster.
im pretty new to this, and this is great!!! but when i select the ableton window it simply takes control of my numpad again. so i dont get midi messages from it. i expect im missing something important. can anyone help me? im on mac btw.
hi, i installed all the stuff but can't make it work on ableton live. What am i missing? maybe the midi config in libe is wrong. How did you setup that? pleaaase heeelp
@hectorbacan2008 hey, yep that might be the case. if you're on windows you need to make sure you've got loopbe installed.
in the patch double click noteout and select loopbe (win) or IAC(mac)
then in live pref/midi set either loopbe or IAC to "track" and "remote".
then when you hit notes on the keypad you should get a little yellow square light up in the top right corner of live letting you know you've got midi coming in.
@zealtv didnt worked :( i followed all your steps but live still doesnt recognize the numpad as a midi device trough loopbe. It only work as a keyboard. No yellow square :( .
@zealtv hey, i found out that if i let the patch on top it works, but if i open other windows or try to do something on the live window it stops sending midi. Also it only works when the num lock is on. Thanks for this patch, i will try to do something with this stuff!!
@hectorbacan2008 great, yep you had me stumped but i remember now that it will only work if max is the active app. thanks, glad you got it working. let me know if you post a vid!
i never thought i would find a video about this. been searching around for about 20 minutes for a video like this. i just bought a ihome key pad today. i thought i was going to be the first to do this, kinda. lol...i should have known better thinking i would be first. but i can only map out 3 keys on ableton with it. please help me figure this out.
@7thcity yeah, the problem i had was i couldn't keymap the drum racks preview button. this is using a max patch to convert keystrokes to midi which are then eaten by ableton and drumracks in the usual way. follow the link in the info above to get the patch if you want to give it a try.
whooow ive thought of doing this.but then it was just a theory. now ive seen it done. damn! cheers mate! now i know its possible. how did you do this man? do you have and idiots guide for this?
@balot912 heya, it's done using a simple max/msp patch that converts keystrokes to midi. i've uploaded the patch to zealousy (dot) com and have linked to the other software you might need to get it going.
thank u thank u thank u!!!...love u dude!..this is what ive always wanted!!..nice vid, and a clever way to improvise using more affordable product...can u pls send me whats needed on the software side for doing this..then i think ill be buying loads of qwerty keyboards..then spending months saving hundreds for a small midi trigger...i hope u reply..thanks again..

the patch in the video should do the job as it is spitting out midi.
if it doesn't and if you're on win have a google for "keystroke to midi". on mac, unfortunately at the moment there's not much out there.
