  • I love all the comments from people who don't own one. Yours is very similar to my 43 Herringbone in color and I have waverly tuners which are a great replacement to my orginial wartime plastic tuners. Great guitar and welcome to the club. There are many great guitar makers out there but none of theirs have been around for 80 to100 years.

  • You are a show-off!

  • playing one just like it right now... i love it!

  • i bet thats worth a shit ton

  • LARRY COME HOME, MOE AND CURLY MISS YOU!

  • 'This is an original guitar, apart from the bridge'........ so it's not all original.

  • I suppose I would be this smug if I had such a guitar in my possession.

  • Man , this guitar sounds f..... awesome !!!

  • @ GUITAPHIL Its around $31,000. But that's at guitar center.

  • Doesn't sound perfect (like a Gibson for example), but it's a beauty.

  • how much cost a new martin d 28?

  • FUCK YEAH

  • Sweet, wish I'd get to play one of them.

  • Lol you look all horny in that chair while you're playing...kinda scary

  • Well, it was a nice lady to have on my lap, but slightly too woody and mature to bring out all of my my erotic preferences. Besides, now it is another guy's lady and I wouldn't dare challenging a guy with that kind of financial resources by screwing things on YouTube. So I hope yo are not scared anymore :-)

  • Got that new string smell! Nice ;)

  • .....Davvero Strepitosa...mai sentito niente del genere...

  • Sorry, Brazilian, not Beazilian... gottta go ride the Hayabusa and clear my head...

  • Martins were ALWAYS the gold standard of flat top steel string guitars and priced accordingly. To say they were cheap workingman's instruments is nuts.

And of course it has Beazilian back and sides, the same as virtually all solid-rosewood American guitars of that era.

Put some PB mediums on it and it will rock the house. Nothing sounds like a pre-war D-28... Thanks for the video!

    Tq

  • Light guage strings? :- )

  • Don't have an idea with the Stradivarius.

They aren't like a typical modern guitar. They are a five course guitar meaning they have 10 strings seperated into five lines, kinda like a twelve string but less strings. Not very practical in terms of playing use which is generally what makes a guitar start becoming collectable.

Instruments are only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for one.I've never heard of one for sale so we'd have to wait and see.

  • Less

Due to the fan bracing design they don't sound anywhere near as good.

  • Sounds great! Thanks for sharing that!

  • to me it sounds like a box of steel.

  • Thank you for sharing this beauty with us!!

Is the back and sidies made of Brazilian Rosewood?

  • no east indian palisander

  • no but I would imagine the fretboard is. Braz is rarely used on backs except for VERY high end guitars, of which Martin's never were. They were always more of a working-mans guitar. That's why they were so popular in Americana music, they were cheap back in the day.

  • The back and sides on this one IS DEFINITELY BRAZILIAN. Martin used that as a standard on the rosewood guitars till 1969. The East Indian rosewood is the present standard. The bridge and fretboard on this one is black ebony.

  • fine, put up a vid of the back in good light.

  • @ih8thishit Martin's were never high end guitar's? Go get your flattop that will even come close to the sound this thing has and let's hear it. Back in the day everything was cheaper. A D45 is almost 8,000...and roger miller's D45 sold for a quarter of a million dollars. Yeah, Bottom of the totum pole.

  • @ih8thishit

    dude, google. it's right there.

  • OMG!!! FELL IN LOVE WITH MARTIN GUITARS NOW!!! hmm... but they're really pricey!.

  • According to "Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars 9th Edition" your guitar is worth $60,000. My Edition is from 2005, so it may be even more as the book explains every year these Martins are going up even more. If it was the D45, it would be worth over $150,000. The condition of yours is excellent and not too common. Be careful with it and get good insurance on it.

  • Good gawd, that tone's increadible.

  • ooo my bad.... wouldn't somethin like this still be worth tons though?

  • Damn man, nice guitar and it sounds amazing! Dude i was looking in a guitar center magazine that just came and for a new one of these d-28 Martins they cost $35,000 can you believe it? Imagine the value of this beaut, its in perfect playing condition and all original. Hang on to her dude you gotta shit load of money right there.

  • a normal brand new D28 cost about 2,500 I just bought a new martin HD28 for 2,600 plus tax, the guitar your talking about is a speacial guitar, and I have seen them to, the one I saw was 31,000...but that is not the normal price for a normal D28.

  • and now...is that old baby for sale??? subsidiary, how much is her value today ??

  • i think the first was released 1937 so quite alot

  • The 1937 D-18 Martin has an AMAZING tone to be heard.

  • WAY WAY WAY to trebly (maybe it was the mic, idk?). Sounds more like a taylor than a Martin. Where was the nice warm tone that a Martin is known for? I didn't like how that sounded at all and I am a Martin fanatic and a proud Martin owner (DX1R).

  • Well, you know, this "recording" was made on my iMac. Using both the camera and microphone "onboard". And that sounds a bit tinny...

  • dx1r isn't a real Martin, just a laminate/import with the Martin label on it. Might be a fine guitar but definitely not an accurate thing to compare "martin tone" to.

  • @TrustinYahweh

The BrazilianAdirodack combo is brighter than the Indian/Sitka combo.

    But bright is good.

  • How much did this go for?

  • what a sound man, i love that guitar ;-)

  • Very very trebblie...must be because he picks so close to the bridge.

  • Its very unfortunate that no martin in production today, or really in the last 20 or 30 years... Can even come close to the sound of a pre war...Also 60 or so years of ageing helps alot...Yet the bastards still charge 2 and 3 grand... Crying shame!

  • Maybe not from Martin but there are some handmade gems out there from small builders that give the prewars a good run.

    Cheers!

  • i have one from a small builder that is a gem. it was modeled after a 1936 martin D28. as soon as i am able to i will post a video of it

  • I think the Authentic series comes pretty dang close.

  • @sitkatop That because that guitar is much older! Wait until 2040 you will think the 2010 models sound awesome.

  • Wow....sheez. That guitar has a different tone than ANY i've ever heard. Man martin is just in a class by itself. Boy i'd a gave my right arm to have that sucker!

  • but then you wouldn't be able to play without your arm

  • I love this guitar :)

  • You could sell that guitar and buy a modest house with the proceeds in most parts of the United States.

  • What kind of strings on it?

  • At that moment, I recall that was a set of Newtone strings, .012-53....

  • fake...

  • Do you sell it?

  • It is already sold.

  • This is the best D-28 i've heard im my life with the only exception the White/Rice one!!!Unbelievable sounds!!!!!!

  • I agree. I've never heard a D-28 with tone like that. It resonates in a way I just can't explain. Incredible.

  • this one for sale?

  • wow ! amazing !

  • Amazing!

  • My Gosh!! What a relic!! Take care of that beauty for us please

  • that's the point, it's not a relic. it's an original.

  • He wrote relic. Not replica. Get your words straight.

  • like dick much?

i can read. a relic is when you like, destroy a guitar to make it look old. this is old, and original.

so i said, no, it's not a relic.

  • Oh My God! How does it feel to play something that awsome? That is one of the best sounding acoustics Iv'e ever heard! I have been playing myself for 19 years, and I am here to say, You have a pot of gold in your hands!

  • Check out more cool vintage Martins on VintageandRare(dot)com

  • i bet it sounds even better in person.

  • Oh, yes indeed!

  • That's got some great sound.

  • Possibly the best sounding accoustic i have ever heard.

    Gorgeous Guitar!

  • That would have been great!

  • The guitar is what he says it is. You can tell it has the vintage tuners...man it sounds amazing...you definantly got urself a VERY nice piece...would love to bluegrass it up for you lol!

  • the late john pearse stated a couple of times that Martin (and others) build much better guitars today than they did in the past.

  • In many ways I actually agree. The only unbeatable fact is the age of these instruments... Something happens over the years, and I'm afraid I won't see how one of the new ones behave in 60 years, hehe

  • Show the serial numbers.... I'm not convinced. It doesn't look like brazilian to me.

  • Well, it is already sold I'm afraid. I only have this movie as memories now, but if you get in touch, I guess I can hook you up with the new owner. But I assure you, this was the real thing... and of course Brazilian and Adirondack.

  • that has got to be the best acoustic guitar i ever heard thank you for posting it!

  • sweet

  • 1938, wow

  • Maybe its the recording quality but it sounds a bit "trebly" dont you think? My year 2000 Taylor 314ce totally blows that away! And it`s still improving!Peace ye`all!

  • it's hard to trust you.

  • this is, when I say yeah! though it sounds a bit tinny...

  • Sounds fantastic!

  • This is brazilian rosewood back and sides?

  • Yes, it is... This particular one is sold, but I do have a 1960 model available. Also with the brazilian - however, I saw a '38 at George Gruhn's shop, if you are inerested in "The Holy Grail". I will make a movieclip with the '60 shortly...

  • Great wonderful tone with these guitars. wow and yes they are the holy grail hehe. Although I have yet to play a brazilian rosewood guitar but that would be wonderful if you were to see a vid of the '60s model one thanks!

  • The recording is not the best, but I can tell this guitar sounds great. I also dig the shit-eating grin on your face as you lean back and play.

  • Hehe... Well, the recording is done just with the internal mic and cam on an I-Mac.... But still works in a way.

  • He does have that "smug bastard" look about him doesn't he? You distract him, I'll steal the guitar and we can do a timeshare thing on the little darling.....I will be figuring out ways to kill you in the meantime though!!!!

  • Don't talk like that, Trond's a very cool guy. I frequent this shop often to buy cheap small bits and parts and strings, and they've never put me a face if I want to try amps or guitar. They even offer u coffee and leave u alone enjoying urself in the test room. Pretty amazing service for a small shop in Norway.

  • I'd have the "smug bastard" look about me as well if I had a guitar like that!I said that in the:- "I'd kill for a guitar like that" sort of fashion.Terje Rypdal was a hero of mine in the '70s.Was going out with a Norwegian girl at the time,so was cool. You heard of him?If not, check him out

  • holy shit it sounds good

  • A little on the tinny side..

Would strings have anything to do with that?

I use D' Adorio on acoustic.

  • Probably sounds the way it does because of crap mikes and replay systems. Try Elixir strings..bit pricey but seem to retain that "new string" sound for ages. A good Martin always sounds like it's a bit of a 12-string to me. I'd like to hear this one properly miked up and played by Michael Hedges if he was still alive...or me even because I am!

  • I'm sad I ever sold my martin guitar in 1979...

  • My personal dream guitar! I have an HD-28VR (Vintage Reissue) but I'm afraid it does'nt sound like that! (Of course it's just a baby and needs to grow a bit).

  • So they never lose their metallic sound then?

  • Would be nice to own one like that...

  • So funny... This guy is actually a very good guitarplayer. Check out his video of the '60 LesPaul and you may hear a little of it. Or you can check out the guitar solo at the end sequence of "Brother" by The Dolphin Days

  • Nice to have money.

  • Well, it has found a new home now - I guess that guy is a pro... And the guitar was actually owned by a great artist when it was for sale, too - I'm just the guy in between here.

  • Big talk from someone who can't even spell...

  • why the fuck would you say something like that. so what he is not the best or even close to the best guitarist. you don't need to be a pro just to own a collectable guitar. your probably and ameture too. people like you are just assholes and don't deserve to be commenting on someones playing.

  • i would give me left nut for that box...

  • ahahahha, that aint worth it. so many innocents are gonna be killed. hah

  • Woo!

  • Well, this guitar now got sold. It is now back in the USA.... it was a pleasure getting to know it, and I'll keep the memories here on YouTube for a while. And there will be some more beauties here soon.

  • une des plus belle vidéos de Martin sur Utube.....

    Bien vu l'ami !

  • I'm going to assume that wasn't a typo and you're selling if for $150. Sold!

  • How about a deal on a amazing condition blonde 1959 335

  • Do you have any pictures?

  • waow!!!

  • Will you give me that guitar ?

  • Hehe, yes - if you give me some gold.

  • I only have little gold ? take anything else ?

  • how much would you sell this for?

  • this will be $ 150.000, due to the excellent condition and a rather unique sound.

  • ok just courious

  • Beatiful sounding old Martin - they dont make them like that anymore...what a pity.

  • That is one of the Holy Grails of the guitar world. I'm surprised that the pickguard is original. They usually shrink and pull away from the top.

  • You are right, and this one is one of the best oldies I've ever seen. And the sound and the loudness is unbeleivable! I guess it won't be everyday to find an available instrument of this caliber.

  • That's a really amazing instrument ! Thanks for showing us !! Ben
