  • By the way, the swastika has relation with the Joy Division's name origin

  • This is a real dark song -.-¬

  • I'm not offended by the swastika but... REALLY?? A FUCKING SWASTIKA???

  • probably the best version of dead souls i have heard

  • I have NO idea why this requires any BLOCKS ; YOUTUBE+GOOGLE

  • Joy Division's name came from an alleged sexual slavery wing in a German concentration camp called the "Joy Division"

So, really, if you're easily offended, the swastika's the least of your worries

  • I like NIN's version better, it's sexy. I think the problem I'm having is that the singer voice is horrible but the band makes up for singer's lack of singing ablities. Sorry if this pissed someone but it just my opinion.

  • @SMILESZ2 ... you're saying Ian Curtis' voice is horrible?

  • @SMILESZ2 fair enough if you dont like the singing thats your opinion. as long as you can appreciate ians talent for poetry and songwriting you are forgiven =P

  • The swastika was used in British music as shock value, because the older generation of course had been attacked by the Nazi's. It was a way to say 'Hey' to those in charge, but none of Joy Division's music is antisemitic in my view, least not what I've listened to. Brilliant though!

  • All the easily offended masses, need to fuck off and get a life! joy division rule..........

  • Joy Division was named after a nazi brothel.

  • Whoever flagged this video as inappropriate or offensive can suck a big fat donkey dick!

  • @napalmocean followed by a horse dick

  • @GenuineAltruist Followed by a rhinoceros dick!

  • I like the use of the swastika. a lot of the goth/industrial/different bands used it and other nazi symbols and stuff. it goes with the music. Besides Nazis dont exist anymore anyways.

  • @MegaRK82 that last sentence is an extremely fucking stupid comment

  • @MIB719 and why is that? ass. which national socialist country's are running around nowadays?

  • @MegaRK82 none, but just because there aren't nazi governments doesn't mean that there aren't nazis...do some fact checks, and you will see that there are plenty of neo-nazi groups all over...USA, U.K., even Germany, and many other places

  • @MIB719 yeah jackass, these neo-nazi groups are nothing compared to the originals. its like any cartoon from the 80's that got redone 20 years later.

  • @MegaRK82 stop being so ignorant...just because their power is decreased doesn't mean that they should be written off or ignored...denial is very, very dangerous...these groups still commit crimes and violence, and just because it's not on a mass scale doesn't mean that it should be dismissed...original Nazi party, KKK, Taliban, etc. all started from humble, small beginnings, and look what happened...DUH!

  • the joy divisions were where nazi soldiers had sex with enslaved jewish girls.

  • joy division was fantastic and the one that associated them to a swastika, is a poor ignorant.

  • it's just a symbol. get over it

  • @Hammerheart88 Yes just a symbol that shows up in almost all religions and parts of the world. you people really could of un-powered the it as a symbol of hate but decided to keep it like it was a monster in and of its self.

  • no need for the swastika really

  • The one nice thing about technology is that it makes it so easy for untalented cretins to share their stupidity with the world...

  • Wath the fuck?? why The swastika ??

  • Great song! Also love the NIN version! Thanks for an awesome vid!!

  • Some great comments here, makes a change for Youtube

  • my favourite song of them

  • Masterpiece. The best song ever recorded by Joy Division. I never get tired of it.

  • Poxa um vídeo tão bom,tão show, mas tem uma parte em q mostra um símbolo nazista, msm assim é bom,só q ofende né..Tbm sou contra o nazismo

  • Who the fuck flagged this? Assholes...Obviously JD never promoted Nazism...

  • @NintendoSegaSonyGuy No idea who. I was very surprised as well when the warning came up.

  • This video is an offense

  • @MindMuzik trololo

  • Anonymous Asshole...on the off chance you have a tragic and personal connection to the holocaust then I can understand your reaction and I won't call you an asshole.

...but your most likely someones parent. Back in my day(10 years ago) parents didn't try to shield their children from the symbols of hatred. When my Mom caught me uttering a racial slur she told the meaning of that word and I stopped using it.So you're kid nothing and you've shown the rest of us your a meddling asshole....bravo!

  • Apparently some pussy was offended by the swastika. They probably didn't even take two seconds to look into the context of those symbols.

...so anonymous histrionic asshole?...have you even listened to this band? Do you even know why people listen to this band?

...if brief snippets of facist symbols makes this white supremacism-then you probably consider the bra section of the sears catalogue hardcore porn and I'll assume you have a terrible sex life.

  • @leeharveyosmosis Lack of ability to understand the ironic use of fascist symbols does not equal lack of tolerance for the graphic representation of rape. Different issues entirely.

  • @ExiledStardust

All hardcore porn is degrading? Did you ask the people involved or did you arrive at that conclusion on your own?

  • @leeharveyosmosis There is no meaningful consent possible unless the balance of power is equal. And it isn't.

  • @ExiledStardust

Think long and hard about why these "graphic representations of rape" are so prevalent, then shut the fuck up.

  • @leeharveyosmosis Graphic representations of rape are prevalent because women are oppressed. Men sure feel threatened when their sense of entitlement to porn is challenged, don't they?

  • @ExiledStardust

Graphic representations of rape exist because of the culture of shame that people like you promote. Again, why don't you ask the fucking women involved instead of imposing your thoughts and feelings on them?

  • There's so much more in this than a song. Very powerful, I'd dare say more then The Doors even.

  • Charlie Manson inked a swastika in his forehead to remind you that a symbol is only as powerful as the power you give it.

  • This version is good also but for THE Crow the other was better

  • sta rola no la olvidare jamassssssssssssssssssssss xxxxxxxxx :)

  • my personal favourite Joy Division.....Stephen Morris does wonders with them there drums!!

  • Nine inch nails does a better version of this in my opinion

  • @4578matt wtf?

  • All you on here commenting on the imagery, your not meant to understand joy division, so best you go listen to some manufactured american pop shite, bye bye cya later!

  • never heard this track before - its pretty good

  • Makes me wonder what would have become of Joy Division if Ian had not left us, amazing!!

  • fucking awesome ... ! god damn it there is sooo much good music out there !

  • The imagery was meant to be ironic.

Some people just see a swastika, freak out and their minds snap shut.

Punk is about stripping away all saccharine fakery and confronting unpleasant realities. Often controversial imagery is used to provoke a reaction. But that imagery does not imply sympathy with the original users of that imagery. Quite the opposite: Ian Curtis had a lot of empathy for victims.

  • This track is amazing.

  • A lot of the swastika or other Nazi ensignia typically that has been associated with Joy Division is due to how they named their band.

It stems from a book "The House of Dolls" by Ka-tzetnik 135633. It is about the Nazi's keeping of beautiful Jewish women alive for the pleasure of the Nazi officers as prostitutes....and their code-name known throughout the reich was "Freudenteilung" also known in english as "Joy Division"

  • I have never known NIN to cover anything but yet they covered this. It must have meant something to them. Listen to the lyrics, ignore the swastika.

  • @JonGee420 Physical is another nice NIN cover, originally recorded by Adam and the Ants, which is also a great band. Metal and Memorabilia are also covers. That's all I can think of right now. :)

  • @JonGee420 Well, he covered Get Down Make Love, by Queen, on the "Sin" single.

  • @JonGee420 - Get Down Make Love is a Queen cover. Suck is also technically a cover, even though I think Trent Reznor wrote it for Pigface.

  • @JonGee420 NIN also covered some songs of Peter Murphy, sometimes while singing with him.

  • @JonGee420 SIEG HEIL MEIN FUHRER.

  • @AnimalNitrateInMind I don't understand why you're being so defensive. I'm entitled to my opinion. Relax. The rest of the video is good.

  • @somebodygothurt I'm sick of people asking the same fucking question over and over. That's why I'm 'being defensive'

  • @AnimalNitrateInMind Well it's not your video and I never asked any question in the first place so why don't you stop replying to comments that don't concern you so you can bring down your blood pressure a bit.

  • Love Joy Division but whats with the swastika???

  • @MrDelacruise Read the Wikipedia article

  • @MrDelacruise Joy Divison was what they called the place where Nazis raped jewish women durning the holocaust.

  • Comment removed

  • @AnimalNitrateInMind Yes but I just think the Nazi imagery ruins the video. They weren't Nazi's. Their songs aren't about hating Jews or the Holocaust. I'll admit that An Ideal For Living has Nazi imagery on the front of it but overall the video could do without the swastika's.

  • Well considering one part of the Nazi imagery was an album cover and the swastika itself was hijacked by the Nazis, I think it's a bit much. If it offends you so much then just listen to the damn song while looking at another window (you know you can do that, right?)

  • @AnimalNitrateInMind Thank you.

  • 27 people should go back to that Top 40 bullshit

  • This was ruined by the Nazi flags. Cut that shit out.

  • @somebodygothurt You do know where Joy Division got their name from right?

  • Great song to listen to when driving alone at 3:00 in the morning after having just broken up with somebody.

  • Joy Division is one of the most innovative bands of our time...they keep calling me!

  • You know, I believe the swastika was originally a Chinese symbol for luck... The Nazis f***ed it all up...

  • @SaraFShirazi nope, it actually was an ancient greek symbol called the "maiandros" or "μαίανδρος"..it had a ambigous meaning..when facing to the right it symbolised life, and when facing left death.. Hitler was obsessed with ancient greece and its symbolisms..

  • happy halloween everybody.

  • Oh yeah, why the hell is there a swastika? F'ing stupid. For christ sakes man. I could see some Prozac stills but swastikas?

  • Ummmm joy division was not a camp. It was originally a vacation program where you saved up stamps to buy vacations. Later, in the hopes of strong arian babies, when so many soldiers were dying they did convalesce soldiers from.the front in womens camps under this program but they were not jewish women. Why would they repopulate with half jewish germans? Dead souls is the title of a book by Nickolai gogal, a Russian author. Good read. Check it out.

  • @kingpest13 I just learned something over the internet! :D

  • 1:25 if you have the volume on high you can hear a rip or skip in the recording, I noticed this on my mp3, anyone else hear this? Regardless this is possibly one of the most influential songs in post-punk/goth history.

  • Please note that Joy Division have never endorsed, supported or even taken kindly to what Nazi's did. So why put a swastika???

  • @lvivboi No they never suported Nazi's. But the name Joy Division was the name of a camp in world war 2 with jewish women. Nazisoldiers could come there and abuse the jewish women sexually

  • @hockopper It was in Poland as well, wasn't it?

  • genius. compare this to rhianna or someone. ridiculous

  • This photo montage is sick...

  • 27 cunts should fuckin look away instead of being negative and disliking everything

  • God damn.

    This is freaking good..

  • Fucking great

  • Awesome slideshow!!!

  • what does the swastika sign in the video?

  • @4RNOLEMMENS I guess the Nazi referred the area where they raped the jews at the camps as the joy division. Or least that what I read...I could be wrong.

  • @JediGTI

They were first named Warsaw and then changed to Joy Division which I think was the name of a brothel that Nazis used.

Its explained in Control (Film about Ian Curtis) but i haven't watched it in a while so I can't remember.

  • This is what I call "Ancient Indie Rock", the repetition of Krautrock, the swagger of punk, and the cynical and self-deprecation lyrics of experimental rock. These guys were the precursors of the 80's underground. These guys are the godfathers of modern rock. Without a doubt the last great rock band and the first great modern rock band of the late 20th century.

  • This is awesome but what was that Nazi flag for? Lol I wasnt expected to see that but the video rocks.

  • @27CAPTSPEIRS read up where they got their band name from

  • @SonnyJmSonnyJm It is a reference in the 1955 novella The House of Dolls written by Ka-tzetnik 135633. "Joy Divisions", which were allegedly groups of prostitutes, but mainly, Jewish women in the concentration camps during World War II, were kept for the sexual pleasure of Nazi soldiers and forced to work there. Between 1942 and 1945, Auschwitz and nine other Nazi concentration camps contained brothels (Freudenabteilung "Joy Division"), mainly used to reward cooperative non-Jewish inmates.

  • Ian was just cool.

  • How could a novel from 1890 relate to a song from 1980?

  • @soatesuk For what i know Ian was an avid reader. He was very much into eastern european writers such as Dostevsky, Kafka, Gogol...

He just took the title from that novel i suppose.

  • @soatesuk For what i know Ian was an avid reader. He was very much into eastern european writers such as Dostevsky, Kafka, Gogol...

  • perfection

  • so fucking good song, but i think the cover with nine inch nails is good too, i like too

  • What can I say? Yes!!!

  • That Bassline is sick

  • Dark at its most beautiful.

  • Inspiration!

  • No Bad,I like.

  • anytime i need to recharge my soul i listen to this!

  • Ian Curtis was SOUL in its pure essence!

  • So great.

  • who are sex pistols?

  • Read Gogol hoping it was related to this song as inspiration. A big dissapointment :(

  • Every time i look at Ian's face i feel so bad. He was such a good lucking guy and he looked like such a nice person. I never met the guy, but his music is enough to let me know that he was a wonderful individual.

    R.I.P.

  • INSPIRADOR

  • is this ian singing

  • @alvastonmick 24...24...24 hours! :P

  • The orinal is better than the Crow, but not by much. I love covers, but the orginals are best for me.

  • The Crow

  • my favourite joy division song ,i wish they were an argentinian band..but one more time one of the best bands ever was british

  • Both Ian Curtis and Trent Reznor use music as emotional catharsis. I personally like the Joy Division version better, but I don't have a problem with whatever Trent emulates from JD because he was influenced by them. Imitation is the highest form of flattery ya mutt.

  • sad you mix joy division with the suvatstika they were not nazi's you Fuck

  • It really makes me laugh when the majority of the mainstream try and claim people like Lil Wayne and Drake to be deep and insightful lyricists. They are not even fit to share the title of 'lyricist' with Ian Curtis.

  • The world would be a richer place with minds like Ian still in the world.

  • ian curtis committed suicide at 23 years old. THAT is a crime to humanity.

  • I'm a Yank that loves Joy Division/New Order!!!! R.I.P. Ian Curtis!!!

  • I love this song I'ts the BEST SONG EVER\

  • Personally i prefer NIN's version. Just don't find the lead singer suitable for this song (No Disrespect just speaking my mind)

  • @MrChill619 post-punk is in a way minimalist. the lead singer is not supposed to sound awesome - he's only getting the message across. the song stands out through message & meaning and how that's juxtaposed against the melody.

  • @MrChill619 your a fucking retard go suck trent reznors dick he has stolen so many song titles from joy division he is a fag who makes crappy music for gay bars

  • @Strongwhite88 i was saying what i thought. ya goddam porch monkey

  • I don't think they were nazi. I mean, ever since punk appeared, Nazi aesthetics has been used as an instrument of provocation, but in few cases it had relation with the ideology.

  • most people would class this song as depressing, i class it as fucking awesome

  • 23 people have dead souls

  • Ian Curtis is the most electrifying front man of his era. It's too bad all that talent and energy came with horrible counterbalances of mental anguish. I love the sounds of Joy forever.

  • the origin of the bands name is:

The joy division was a known name for areas in concentration camps (2nd W.W.) where (female) prisoners offered their services to the (German) guards.

....What the nazis called female prisoners who were kept alive to be prostitutes for the german army.

  • @showtimescott Yes but that doesn't mean they were nazis.... I didn't like to see the swastika in this video :\

    T

  • @GamerXY7 thy werent dude listen to the lyrics in the walked in line the intro part. they just loved to piss everybody of.

  • @GamerXY7 but they were most likely nazi sympathizers. the swaztika is a metaphor for the jewish record executives who control all the power. they are called Joy Division because they are "kept alive" to be "prostitutes"

    for the record companies

  • @headster321 ''wearing their uniforms so fine they drank and killed to pass the time carrying the shame of all their crimes they walked in line they walked in line'' going into line was a moto in nazi germany that meant making all things same eliminating differences so everybody would be equal amongst the state the song refers to the nazi clearly ''wearing the shame of their crimes''. ian was no nazi I am interested extremly in nazi germany like he was and i aint no nazi for god's shake

  • whats with the nazi's flag at 0:46??

  • so nin covered this. wow I didn't know that.

  • To me when i see Ian dance to his music he looks less like a frontman having a unique gimmick than more like someone possessed by some dark musical demon entity

  • chillingly creepy and hauntingly awesome to be played in crypts, vaults, catacombs, tombs, dungeons awesome

  • i'm still amazed tha after ian cuttis's death the rest of the band went on to become the lotus eaters and have a hit with first picture of you....it is a strange world we live in....

  • 31 years ago today Ian took his life away

  • I've watched quite a few of the vids that people have put together to go with these songs. No doubt, Joy Division were unnervingly brilliant. But why the sanctification of Ian Curtis?

  • @peterrabbity well, you can see what joy division without curtis was, no sanctification, just admiration

  • brilliant

  • fuck those people who played this song just to not like it

you cant compare any of this to anybody ian was unique in everyway

  • fuck those people who played this song just to not like it

  • Comment removed

  • 30 years on, and still Joy Division are beyond compare with any other band. Just a few ordinary blokes with no musical experience or training, who saw the Pistols and thought 'well if they can get up and do it, maybe we can too'. There's an almighty ferocity in their music which scares the living daylights out of me, and I haven't seen that again in any other band for the last 30 years. There is rock/pop music, and there is Joy Division. They're in a league all of their own.

  • @579enact i love you

  • @579enact I agree with you 100%

  • @579enact you havent been looking very hard have you then?

  • @579enact you dont know of one good band in the past 30 years? how much music do you listen too?

  • who put the fuckin swastika in this video ,you cunt .joy division were and are no fuckin scumbag shit of the fuck earth nazis. got your facts wrong pal

  • @boardy777777 Read the description?

  • @boardy777777: The creator of this video stole this footage from Grant Gee's Joy Division documentary. Check it out -- it's great. Anyway, the footage with the swastika was simply from the part of the film where they explain the origin of the name "Joy Division" and the band's fascination with Nazi propaganda art. No, they most certainly were not card carrying Nazis -- they just thought Hitler & Company had neat art work. Thankfully, Rob Gretton -- their manager -- put a stop to that shit.

  • @DaftSwank what do you mean thankfully he put a stop to that shit?

if they liked nazi artwork, they should be allowed to use it. its only artwork, and they were artists

  • @meab12: Well, yeah . . . but somehow I doubt we'd still be talking about Joy Division 30 years on from when Ian died had they insisted upon keeping with that imagery -- let alone be aware of Barney, Hooky, and Stephen's post-Joy Division resurgence with New Order. See, when you're trying to market a band to the masses, best to stay away from stuff that overwhelms with references to the scourge of humanity.

  • @DaftSwank You sir, are absolutely right. It was naive of me to think a band could become successful to the extent that they have if they were associated with nazi imagery

  • @meab12 Definitely check out Grant Gee's "Joy Division" documentary. The story of Rob Gretton laying into them for the artwork on their very first release, "An Ideal For Living", after becoming their official manager is absolutely priceless!
