I just took out 3 shirts to iron after watching this video a couple times. Wow! I was able to do it in 5 to 6 minutes each. It came out great! Thank you so much. What a great skill to have.
Something that's speeded things up for me was to iron the back of the buttons in a single pass, rather than dodging around the buttons from the front.
Can you make a video about how to keep shirts fresh? I always have a problem with "ring-collar" forming from just a single wear. Is there a way to avoid ring-collar forming and best ways to remove them?
I have a question that I don't believe was adressed in this video. It regards the collar:
Looking at your (and others') collar it is curved at the front (if you start from the neck and follow the collar to the shoulder, it's bent slightly outwards). When I iron my shirts they tend to get bent inwards instead, especially in the afternoon. Do you have any suggestions as of what I'm doing wrong or can do better?
Thanks so much for a shirt-ironing tutorial that is actually about ironing shirts!
I wondered yet about when we have the box pleat in the back sewn in at the yoke. How far down should those pleats be ironed? Should they taper or just abruptly disappear?
Second question, when you've got a double seam under the sleeve should you fold that to the back or the front to find the bottom of your sleeve?
Ill give this a go, but i have a real problem with my Lewin shirts. It concerns the arms. Just before the cuff, its impossible to get them straight, so you just have to iron, then re-iron, then turn over, and repeat. Am i doing something wrong?
@flobbingdonkey Hello, the easiest way is to form the pleats and press the bottom part of the sleeve from the inside of the sleeve when ironing the inside of the cuff (or the top of the cuff on a double-cuff shirt). This way, when you iron the sleeve you don’t need to iron all the way down to the cuff. By the way, the first pleat into the cuff should run in a straight line from the crease along the sleeve top. Hope that makes sense – and helps!
What's the best way to iron the sleeves Where it meets the cuff? I find it's tough cause it's where it pleats into the cuff and buttons are in the way. Always comes out still wrinkly.
@nyrz Hello, we would recommend that you iron the collar and yoke of the shirt, and then apply the spray with starch and iron once more. It depends on how crisp you would like your shirts to be as to how much starch you use during the ironing process.
I have 14 TM Lewin shirts, I refuse to wear a shirt unless it's TM Lewin. Am I being snobby? Yes, and proud. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't take drugs, dont' sleep around, so i'm allowed my 1 little luxury and indulge in it with pleasure :)
I was going downstairs to "iron" (or what I though was ironing! lol) a bunch of my shirts and thought "mmm maybe I should youtube it..." and your video came up first. Thanks a lot! buttoning the one on the neck was the key!!!
I've worked for a famouse Italian designer for 5 years and believe me this is by far the best demonstration and advice I have seen, especially the buttoning of the top button! Top man!
I always thought that shirts should be turned inside out before ironing, so as to avoid damaging the "outer layer" (for example, if the iron is too hot, the material sometimes turns shiny). Apparently I was wrong...?
Do you have a video that shows how to iron a dress shirt sleeve on more detail? I have hard time around the cuff cause of the buttons and all the other details in that area. Just comes out wrinkly. Also any suggestions and tips of washing nice dress shirts? I used to bring them to the dry cleaners but to cut costs I'm now washing them on my own and they just don't come out the way I like.
@runescapeglicthes Your shirt likes steam. Give it lots. The more the better. In fact, soak your shirt in karosene first than light it on fire. This will solve your steam problems.
@RocketRossUK Hello, the starch is optional to make your shirts look straighter and therefore more formal – but, it really depends on the occasion. Hope that this helps!
Thanks, nice video. But when you iron the sleeve, you make a pleat (at edge), but your shirt (on you) don't have pleats on sleeves. It is some different, isn't it? :)
So the ironed shirt isn't so beautiful than shirt on you. :)
P.S. Sorry for my english, i hope you understand me.
Honestly, this video has turned me from an ironing hater to an ironing almost-liker, which for me is a major change. Thanx a lot for a very concise and helpful video.
@StevenJamesJ: you don’t have to spend a fortune on equipment, but do get a reasonably priced steam iron for around £40-£50. And a big ironing board will make the job much quicker as you don’t spend half your time moving the shirt around and getting it creased again. The new type of ironing boards have a mesh top and this allows steam to pass through, it could set you back around £60 – but will last forever, with the occasional change of cover.
I have a cheap, thin ironing board and a terrible, years old mega-cheap iron. Some shirts come out OK and some barely look like they've been ironed. None come out awesome despite years of ironing/practise.
Is there a glass ceiling with poor equipment or is it all technique and the good stuff is just nice to have? I havn't laid out the cash yet just in case it's all me.
Loved the video. Tried the ironing techniques taught here and was very satisfied with the results. We could definitely use your expertise in a video on the cleaning and care of a dress shirt. (dry clean vs washing machine, etc ) Any chance of that happening?
very usefull one thing is that it would be cool to show a shirt un-ironed against one which is ironed, maybe before/after because ive never really known how much of a diffrence it makes to a shirt. but my dad goes on about it ALOT :P
Most of us do know how to iron. It just take longer time and frustrating sometimes when the material is not 100% cotton and some shirts after washing especially around the collar and wrist tend to crease. It's difficult to get is in shape. It is also very hot work if you're in tropical country - so there. Thanks for loading the vid.
I find ironing the cuff end of the sleeve very difficult, there are quite many folds with not enough surface to operate on - there is no video around showing us how to do that bit in details.
Thank you for posting this wonderful video! I gave up trying to iron my husbands shirts. You can't imagine how much money I will be saving not going to the dry cleaners now. I ironed 2 shirts immediately after watching the video and they look wonderful! I'm still a little slow, but I'm sure with practice I'll be at 3 mins =)
Sometimes, there are folds at the sleeves and back of the shirt so it is very hard to lay them completely flat for ironing. If I try to iron them as flat as I can, crease lines will form around the folds. I don't see you having this problem when ironing. Whats your trick?
how soon after the drying process are you ironing? that is, straight out of the dryer, or straight off the clothesline, or, do you wait a while, and why?
@BerenFromAustralia We would not recommend tumble drying as it can cause the cotton to shrink; it can also create small creases in the fabric which makes ironing more difficult. Hanging the shirt on a hanger to dry or line-drying outdoors. Collars & cuffs will always take longer to dry & if they're too damp they'll be more difficult to iron. Drying indoors for about 8 hours (or overnight) usually does the job and then mist-spray the shirt all over with water before ironing.
Thanks! I'm kind of blown away by how easy you made it look, time for me to give it a try! Your accent is awesome and the shirt you're wearing is even better.
Just fantastic; until I found your channel it seemed quite difficult to find good quality vids on this subject. Good male grooming and dressing isn't hard if you're taught how; problem is it isn't taught!

i can hear the steam going, are you pressing a button to release the steam? What about when the "yoke" has that pleat thing that makes it harder to iron?
Great tips on ironing shirt. I like it when the part it needs to be press down with firm pressure and flip the shirt in swift action. Haha.. Ha. I'm going to try it. Good instructions.
Spent close to an hour trying to iron one shirt tonight. Singed a small brown spot on the back of it. Aaaaaand I'm only buying iron free shirts from now on fck this.
couldnt you have said you were steaming all the way through before the end... trying to do it step by step here! also you shouldve mentioned do both sleeves first...not just one..
Question: Do you dry your shirts in a dryer, or do you hang them to dry after they come out of the washer? My experience has been that hanging them to dry makes them wrinkle up -- which makes my ironing job more work.
I just took out 3 shirts to iron after watching this video a couple times. Wow! I was able to do it in 5 to 6 minutes each. It came out great! Thank you so much. What a great skill to have.

Question: Do you dry your shirts in a dryer, or do you hang them to dry after they come out of the washer? My experience has been that hanging them to dry makes them wrinkle up -- which makes my ironing job more work.
Thanks for your video, BTW. Great tips.
