i have an OLD pic that my dad has of when they was building this, i love living in this town....they used to have one lane open so you could still drive across it during bridge day....ya cant now,, you have to go all the way down Fayette station if you want across, that is if your driving, or you can just walk across on bridge day, there is a catwalk under the bridge...your not "allowed" to get on it haha...but recently they have made a walking trail from the overlook down to the bridge catwalk.
@JOM123456 Nope! I was talking to a guy that tried and the police told him he couldn't. They have bridge day, where they close all lanes and the have people jumping from it!
I used to have to deliver food to Summerville a lot. I've been over this bridge in my rig when it was foggy, icey, snow, etc. You never really get used to the height.
This video motivated me to check out the New River Gorge Bridge for the first time, last weekend, over in West Virginia. It's quite a spectacle and worth the visit.
We were there last weekend for a family reunion and drove to the bottom to wade in the New River..it's awesome and INSANELY high, not for those afraid of heights!!
I'm from Europe but my family lives in Fayette County, maybe less than 1 mile away from this bridge. Quite a nice place. I hope I'll be there this year at least for Bridge Day.
PS. In the morning fog rocks and the bridge it's not as scary as it looks in this vid.
Its a great place. I never realized how much I liked West Virginia before I went Whitewater rafting last year and the year before. Try the rafting if you havent already.
my family and i are from nicholas county and my great uncle worked on the bridge. he worked for uss steel out of pittsburgh, pa. he died shortly after the bridge was completed in cincin, oh from a work related accident saving a co-workers life.... rest in peace i am proud of you uncle daris....he died when i was 2 yo and the first time i ever seen him in video was when my mother bought a video from bridge day. he was driving rivits on the arch of the bridge...
I ride over this bridge every summer going to my grandma's house in summersville.
