Why do all of these posts inevitably result in an irrelevant debate about WWII? We are discussing the ethics of whaling. I myself am opposed to whaling and see no reason for it. If I could be a part of sea shepherd's crew, I would. However, I have a child now and have to watch from the sidelines as ignorant people pollute my air and wipe out unique species, taking them away for future generations to enjoy and revere.
There are many species that are endangered (like the bilby) and are endangered due to introduced animals like foxes (that eat them) and hares (stealing their homes). There are also many native mouse/rat species that are endangered due to the competition with the european species. Though there are measures being taken to preserve native animals, it still comes down to the squabbling of politicians determining how much gets spent on these projects (less than needed, which irritates me greatly).

Japan is trying to establish sustainable whaling is possible. In fact, they already know how, but anti-whaling countries make up "flaws" in their analysis, so Japan is forced to go back.

there is no guarantee that non-peer reviewed papers are not important. Most of the important findings in science remain unpublished. It happens all the time.

Why do all of these posts inevitably result in an irrelevant debate about WWII? We are discussing the ethics of whaling. I myself am opposed to whaling and see no reason for it. If I could be a part of sea shepherd's crew, I would. However, I have a child now and have to watch from the sidelines as ignorant people pollute my air and wipe out unique species, taking them away for future generations to enjoy and revere.

There are many species that are endangered (like the bilby) and are endangered due to introduced animals like foxes (that eat them) and hares (stealing their homes). There are also many native mouse/rat species that are endangered due to the competition with the european species. Though there are measures being taken to preserve native animals, it still comes down to the squabbling of politicians determining how much gets spent on these projects (less than needed, which irritates me greatly).

In the 1950's the Japanese government allowed a big company to dump mercury into the ocean and thousands of Japanese people got extremely ill, many children born deaf and blind, without limbs and so on. Dolphin and whale meat contain mercury levels that are not safe levels to consume.

Centaur was in WWII but they found the wreckage 2 months ago with the remaining people on board that did not escape. The Japanese denied sinking the centaur (who else was in the area at the time with torpedoes?)If Japan are taking measures to save the blue fin tuna, it's too little too late. Yes that was an agreement in their treaty, but Germany had no intention of keeping to the agreement, he was only buying time so Germany can knock out France and Britian from the War he was intent on invading both Russia and Poland. Thats why when Frnace fell and the Luftwaffe were bombing Britian, Germany began to advance on the otherside of Poland and into Russia, if you look at any text book it would tell you that both these countries were at war with each other.

How do they migrate? Do they migrate to the south specifically to mate? Do they only mate there? What food do they eat and where? At what age do they get sexually mature/stop to mate? How big is each herd, and what is the age composition? Any differences among different herds? These are all valid questions.
Japan is trying to establish sustainable whaling is possible. In fact, they already know how, but anti-whaling countries make up "flaws" in their analysis, so Japan is forced to go back.

Scientists study whales in many countries and follow individual whales which are identified photographically.
ie, "by looking at them" scientists can identify individuals as markings are distinctive like fingerprints.
The age of these studied whales is known more than accurately enough by studying them over years and seeing their interactions . This provides valuable information.
Dead individuals cannot be studied to see how they and their interactions change over time.

Conducting a legitimate long term study of a wild population is greatly impacted by having poachers kill the study subjects at random.
Dianne Fossey had the same problem with bushmeat poachers, and the dynamics of natural family groups were greatly disrupted. Unlike Japan, the Bushmeat hunters made no pretence they were conducting research with the tissue samples they were collecting and but similarly, made no followup study on the disruption they were causing to the family groups .

there is no guarantee that non-peer reviewed papers are not important. Most of the important findings in science remain unpublished. It happens all the time.

When the whales were hunted extensively, they reached sexual maturity at much younger age, as a natural reaction to over-hunting. The current shift indicates that minke population is healthy.

I don't get this. So when you do it, let's not talk about it, but when Japan does the same, and do research on top of it, you should stop it?

The profit isn't for research it is to fill there pocket. The rest is to hunt more whales continue with the lie and fill there pockets more.
I'm not saying it is bad here. The conversation started out talking about Japan so why fucking change it. Besides the Inuit aren't trying to make money off of it.

They raise approximately US$50m. Of course, no one voluntarily goes to the South ocean for free, so they do hire people who can do it out of the money raised the previous year. It is called a job. What is wrong with it? People work to fill their pocket. I do too.

The corporation fills there pockets not the workers. They are out for a money grab. It is a big cover up.
They hunt lots of other animals such as dolphins and sharks just to sell the meat. If there was international hunting laws put on sharks, and hunting of sharks was banned, they would write research on the side of there boat, just so they can collect the fins and sell them.

As if the worker do not get paid. Every corporation makes money. It is called capitalism. That is what our society is like. Starbucks/SecondCup make huge money while paying small amount of money to people who actually make coffee. I am not crazy about it, but why do you expect that the whaling industry is somehow different from other corporations?

Because even though they are doing a bit a research I must admit, the main reason for them doing it is to sell the meat and make a profit not study the whales. The whaling ban was brought in, in 1986 Japan before the ban did allot of commercial whaling which is why they were the only country against the whaling ban.
In 1987 there ships pulled out of the harbor with research written on the side.

If you refer to the moratorium, there are many trying to overturn the moratorium, not just Japan. Norway and Iceland whale commercially against the moratorium, because they took the formal procedure to object the moratorium. That is a part of the IWC framework. If you do not agree, you don't have to. Japanese whaling in sanctuary is also based on the same ground.

Lots of people from anti-whaling countries that are part of IWC are saying Japan is paying off many poorer countries to join IWC and vote in favor of whaling. A 75% majority is needed to overturn the moratorium.
Norway objected to the moratorium and therefore is not bound by it. Japan was going to reject it until they were threatened by the US to cut Japan's fishing quota in US territorial waters

Japanese whaling is not legal when it is in the sanctuary. By law they are allowed to kill a set number each year for scientific research, but that cannot happen in the whale sanctuary.

no, it can happen. This is a sentence from the IWC website on sanctuary.
"At the 46th (1994) Annual Meeting the IWC adopted the Southern Ocean Sanctuary as another area in which commercial whaling is prohibited."
It says COMMERCIAL whaling.

The spot Japan does allot of hunting in, is not only in the antarctic whaling sanctuary, but also in the Australian whale sanctuary. I messed up the two sanctuaries. it is an offence to kill, injure or interfere with a cetacean in the Australian Sanctuary.
Japan has even been taken ti international court.

That is a silly joke. It is not an Australian territory to begin with, and therefore, AU law cannot apply. AU claims it to be its territory, but only four countries recognizes this.

-What food do they eat and where?Plankton, Krill, that is all Minkie whales in in the southern hemisphere. Where the whale sanctuary is, that is why the whale sanctuary is there. The Japanese hunt here which is illegal.

you should probably learn to read English here. For example, "how do they migrate?" does not only mean "what is the mode of transportation" but "which path do they take"
You are simply taking the reading you want out of the question, and answer the dumbest. Incidentally, they also eat fish, and sexually maturity is reached in recent years at higher age, as JARPA has discovered.
