  • PERFETTO!

  • Hilary Hahn rocks!

  • No artistically being out of tune is not good. I allow for that more in jazz or gypsy music, but this is classical. If you've ever listened to someone sing flat you should know how much difference it makes.

There are many great violinists around. In this group Hilary Hahn is best. She also has a very comprehensive and difficult repertoire. Korngold, Schoenberg, Bach, Paganini, etc.

    "The Village" soundtrack...excellent.

I like some that are fairly unknown. Try Winterconcertfanclub's channel

  • Harmonics are imitating people whistling. So people rarely bother if they are perfectly in tune when they whistle , like coming home from the pub. "Excuse me my friend but you are whistling out of tune"--Wallop! That`s how you get a fat lip. So---artistically ---a bit out of tune is better. Discuss.

  • Shaham is also slightly flat. If you think of his violin whistling a tune...listen to how out of pitch the whistle is.

  • I agree Hilary is #1. She literally makes the violin whistle with sweet accuracy and musicality. Perlman is an awful whistler...staccato and not sweet at all.

Alright, I'm not a violinist. Just stating my finely tuned ears delicate sensitivities. LOL

  • music isn't really about playing fast nor playing perfect but it is about making the music yours although playing in perfect pitch and fast makes it interesting but in my personal opinion Hilary Hahn is the best because she takes care about the sound quality what is one of the most important things in music and she doesn't have to demonstrate to anyone that she can play faster because she obviously can but she makes HER OWN VERSION

  • 1. Hilary Hahn

    2. Gil Shaham

    3. Michael Rabin

    4. Itzhak Perlman

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • Hilary is the only one who can play this piece without any unwanted hissing noise. It's so pure you can hardly believe it's coming from that wooden istrument

  • Accuracy, smoothness of tone, consistency of tone quality, phrasing/dynamics. If you ask me, each violinist does all four of these things pretty darned well, but one stands out on each of them to me. Just saying, there are any number of aspects you can prioritize here, and depending on which you prioritize, each violinist shown here is best on at least one, I think.

  • i give the most props to Rabin. who made it sound like two flutes

  • Com'n, these are top notch violinists. They've reached the acme of violin playing. Thus, there isnt any technically 'better' ones and 'mediocre' ones in their level.

  • She makes it sound as easy as two cowboys casually whistling and warbling with each other on a lazy afternoon. Not a hint of struggle or showiness.

  • Hilary is the only one who actually PHRASES the harmonics.

  • I prefer Miss Hahn !

  • Leonid Kogan owns them all :)

  • hillary hahn fucks everybody

  • It tells a lot about the musicality of each one. Judging this from a few bars isn't fair though, but it's a nice sample.

  • Newbie question: How the heck do you apply vibrato to harmonics?

  • @killerecho These are artificial harmonics, they are played by placing your first finger on a given note and then barely applying pressure with your fourth finger a fourth up, this creates a harmonic that is two octaves above the note where your first finger is. So, in order to execute vibrato, you vibrato with both fingers. If you want to see this, watch a video of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy

  • @killerecho

You do vibrato while playing harmonics.

  • @killerecho

Very good question. These are fingered harmonics so you constantly keep your first finger on the string while extending the 4th finger. It is possible to rock the first finger where ever you put it. The fourth finger has to glide at the same speed the first finger rolls. Not easy but doable. She probably does it almost unconciously. That's what is amazing about the ease of her playing.

  • @TECstudio Thanks for that clarification. Hahn's genius has always been to make the impossible sound effortless.

  • i barely cant listen to this piece 4th times, couse that is not what music ment to be, this is just technique, i hate this kind of pieces. so it doesnt matter who plays it better, couse either way it isn good! this is not, what makes a man a good musician!

  • Hahn's is defiantly the cleanest. Perlman's has the most personality and is the most interesting, but it is the least clean/accurate. Overall, Rabin is my favorite

  • it's ridiculous these kind of judgment. that's the most non-artistic thing on music!

  • Rabin is my favorite.

  • Perlman is so generous, warm and human ... who cares about minor imperfections (...) when you enjoy a real mature musical soul ! Music is not about technic but flesh and blood.

  • Boring is a matter of opinion. Hilary Hahn's was definitely the cleanest.

  • I am a great fan of Hahn, but in this case I prefer Rabin and Shaham

  • I vote... uh... hm. I like Hahn and Shaham the best. Love the clarity.

  • My vote is for Rabin. His harmonics are clearer than are Perlman's; his tempo is better than that of Hahn; and he adds vibrato which Shaman does not. All four are splendid, but for me its RABIN.

  • Even with perfect double harmonics, virtuosity is not one of Hahn's strengths. I mean the kind that makes tough passages sound scintillating, as if they could be played for breakfast without warming up. MAYBE if Hahn added some personality or temperament to her playing, she could do that. But I doubt it. She wouldn't have the technique to support a temperment.

  • One thing is for sure: Hahn's is the most boring. Sleeping would be more exciting.

  • i can't believe people think hahn's is the best... it's dry and boring! at least perlman keeps on truckin despite the difficulties, shaham's is the most technically perfect, but my favourite is rabin for his intensity and clarity. hahn doesn't get a medal

  • definitivamente Hilary Hahn, que claridad y sobre todo una afinacion perfecta

  • Kogan is still the best! Case closed!!!

  • Keep in mind that it is harder for Perlman to produce harmonics due to his large hand size. His actually sounds rather good considering.

  • and he adds vibrato to the double harmonics. Impressive.

  • I think (only my opinion!) Hilary Hahn is by far the best! She has the best tone and I agree with the user who said that she could totally play it faster if she wanted to. SHE DIDN'T MAKE CUTS! Hear her perform first before making judgments like that! I really like Shaham's too! Maybe Shaham and Hahn are close, Hilary being number one in my opinion.

  • Don't forget that Rabin's recordings are much older and were recorded on LPs mostly. The technology back then just couldn't catch the essence of his playing.

  • Who cares who plays it "best". Best is just an opinion. They all have different styles and opinions in their heads of how it's supposed to go.

  • The people who listen and choose which they prefer are the ones who care who is best. Just as much as it is the performers opinion on how to play it, it is the listeners opinion on who plays it best. While we can appreciate all professional players on some level, there is nothing wrong with ranking them according to personal preference. People have been debating this for centuries and it will go on for centuries more. Get over it.

  • I was wrong, Perlman is not the fastest. Using a metronome, Itzhak is 96-98 fluctuating, Rabin 98-100 fluctuating, Shaham 100 fluctuating and Accardo is 104. Hilary is 84 with fluctuations. She rushes the run. Best sense of time is Accardo and Shaham in that order. Where most loose it are the runs. They tend to rush them. I could be more accurate but my metronome goes by increments of four. Best control goes to Accardo and Shaham.

  • But with music perfect time is not everything. Some could care less that Hilary is slower and that Accardo is fastest or in this group Shaham is fastest.

  • @violin144000 If you could care less then why don't you? PEOPLE THE PHRASE IS "I COULDN'T CARE LESS". Learn english please.

  • @violin144000 True some people couldn't care less if the passage was played slowly by Hilary. However this is Paganini if you want to be top dog you have to be able to execute these harmonics in the tempo of the exposition. If you can't, it's probably a technical defect. Yeah I said it!

  • @violin144000 Is this a sport discipline or what ?

  • dont know but Shaham sounds best for me, clearest and brightest sound... hahn does also a superb job, didnt like it from Perlman and Rabin tho..

  • I think for creativity and musicality and technique even though it was slower it was perfect Hilary beat them significantly the harmonics are soo clean and the harmonic after the run very nice. Perlmans is playful. Next is Shaham and then Rabin.

  • Shaham..... by far!

  • 1. Shaham (cleanest, best sense of line in the entire passage, best balance of double stops)

    2. Rabin (next cleanest, totally fearless approach and masterful command)

    3. Perlman (gotta hand it to Itzy, how can a guy with such huge hands even get through this passage!)

    4. Hahn (smooth and clean as usual but the pace is lacking)

  • Hahn has more emotion into it

  • Michael Rabin probably did it in one take, like the caprices.

  • 1st Hahn

    2 nd Shahan

    3 rd Rabin

4 th Perlman . But I would like to be Perlman....!

Besides, the 24 Paganini Capricci by Rabin have not yet surpassed(secure),although many people play them wonderfully. It's funny to judge this way on the sofa! Compliments for the comparison to ImPitch....It' s useful to do this although a bit cruel.Thank You.Continue.

  • Try to compare just Shaham with Hahn, even if she cut the recordings, Shaham is still so much in tune and faster than her, musicaly he's also better!

  • In my opinion it is unfair to compare these recordings. Hilary Hahn takes lots of cuts in her recordings but Perlman refuses to edit his recording. The same applies for Rabin and Shaham so for any of you saying 'Hilary has the cleaning playing' thats because she has edited the harmonics about 20 times (Perlman is my favourite by the way!)

  • have you heard hilary hahn in person? she's the most perfect violinist i ever heard, how do you know she cut the recordings?

  • it's actually common knowledge that most of today's soloists splice their recordings...not just Hilary Hahn..

  • 1st-shaham

    2nd-hahn

    3rd-perlman

    4th-shittyshittyrabinitty

  • Siento no poder expresar esto en inglés con corrección. La dificultad de estos armónicos dobles está en hacerlos ligados, no staccato. Pido que se escuchen con atención; Hilary es la única que los hace bien, muy ligados y muy bien afinados.

  • itzhak perlman's was the best

  • "he was", long ago. Today... the best is Hilary Hahn

  • Hilary Hahn is amazing. I enjoyed her interpretation the most.

  • have to agree with muslit, now if only i could get my double stop harmonics like that. But i always prefer bright over mellow.

  • My favorite, from these recordings, was Gil Shaham. Hahn's tempo (as usual) was too slow, the result being careful. Shaham's came off much more naturally.

  • Hilary Hahn could play this twice as fast if he wanted to. She might take it slow, but you can hear every note perfectly.

  • I like Hahn's better.

  • Hillary Hahn is by far the best, absolutly perfect!

  • In general , they are the great artist, the sought after violinists!!!5 stars.

  • Great Shaham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shaham's is a good blend of accuracy and life; Perlman's was very musical but left much to be desired and Hahn's was a little dry. Rabin was difficult to tell due to the age of the recording..

  • Perlman es un bárbaro, fijaos como es capaz de vibrar las notas armónicas mientras los demás no lo hacen. Pero los cuatro fantásticos, sin duda alguna!

  • my rating is:

    1) Gil Shaham (absolutely perfect!)

    2) Hilary Hahn (wonderful, but too slow and very little tuning problems)

    3) MIchael Rabin (some harmonics are not perfectly double)

    4) Itzhak Perlman (many imperfections)

    anyway, all these are great!

  • 2:33 - Gil Shaham not in tune.

  • You must be really deaf if you put Rabin on the 3d place, what harmonics where not perfectly double?? Tell me ?? go home and practise, amateurs.

  • All 4 are great!!,I can't choose one of them.

  • Hillary Hahn is the cleanest and in this part only matters to be clean!

  • Perlman. The notes are alive.

  • Perlman uses a true vibrato and phrasing in harmonics! I like this

  • Hey people, this is slightly unfair to Michael Rabin as his is an old recording. Harmonics rely on high frequency components and would sound much less sweet on old recordings.

  • Hilary produce the best sound, as is usual and as always it is recognized by experts; second Sahan

  • Hilary Hanh do it really more slowly than the others.., listen carefully , of course, she is absolutely very careful...but very boring

  • Gil Shaham, absolutely!!!!

  • I don't really like Hilary Hahn much cuz she seems kinda arrogant to me (but I do admire her talent ^_^). She definitely did the best. Can't argue, lol. Gil Shaham comes dangerously close =).

  • the most clean ---> Shaham

i like the most ---> Perlman

don't understand why everyLbodyA likCes HKan'sO bFetTteAr, STE ?

  • Admit it, Hilary's is the best here, it isn't worth denying. They are SO CLEAN.

  • As I said before, it plays almost double the time slower than the others and the others strangely playng at exactly the same time, but faster, I'm not saying it is a hack but time is also important

  • it's scary clean. almost mechanical.

technically speaking, paganini would be scared by her.

  • Because she plays them better. I can't stand the way Perlman play his. Shahams are out of tune. Hilarys are perfect.

  • Hahn is the cutest for sure

    HAHA

  • Can't beat Hilary on this one. They're perfectly played. But the tone quality of hers is better too...it must be her Vuillaume.

  • or her ( :

  • No one sounds like Hilary Hahn!

  • haha thank you :P

  • im sure you are wrong..

  • is this a reply for me??

  • well yeah..

  • Oops.... nobody is agree with me... :(....

why am i wrong??? how can be wrong an opinion??

  • 1- Hilary Hahn

    2-Gil Shaham

    3-Itzhak Perlman

    4-Michael Rabin

  • I completely agree:

    1- Hilary Hahn

    2-Gil Shaham

    3-Itzhak Perlman

    4-Michael Rabin

You have a good ear for music.
