They come close in my opinion. Amare is better of course at shooting but Dwight is better on defense. But since Dwight is more of my favorite player, pick him.

@chuds22 It's not point in blocking shoots. Howard force his opponents to take a bad shoots and he's not letting people in the paint, he force them to take mid and long distance shoots. And you can tell this for Amar'e. Maybe he can have 2 blocks per game but thats it, that's he's only effort on defence -2 blocks per game, 2 saved baskets. I think Id take Amares explosiveness over dwight. yes dwights obviously the better defensive player probably the best in the NBA, but Amares offensive skillset is miles ahead of Dwight howards. And Amare DOES rebound. He averaged 9 rebounds last year
Who is better depends on their role in the team and who they have around them. Amare isn't an anchor, and shouldn't have been played at the 5 spot for the back half of his career. He's clearly an offense orientated PF, and as such needs to have a reb/shot-blocker backing him up in the middle. Dwight on the other hand is a true anchor and probably the best around. In a team with 2 or 3 other go to scorers in which he can contribute primarily with Reb/blks he would be invaluable.
Id rather have Howard on my team. Amar'e is really good but he cannot be THE MAN on a team, he's a player that can help the main star of a team win. No D, no rebounds whatsoever. Defensive presence and rbounding would make Amar'e a lot more important for the team he plays in. New York will not be a good team this year, Amar'e isnt a massive uprgade over David Lee, and Phoenix did win A LOT the second season was named MVP with Ama're out the entire season with knee injury.

Wow interesting. They are basically complete opposites. Amare ia an amazing force in the paint, he can also shoot a very good jump . Yet let's face besides a few blocks, he just strugles defensively. Howard has little to no offensive presence. Yet he can rebound and play amazing defense while having the ability to dunk as well. All said Amare always seems to contribute in so many ways, he dunks, he can shoot, he can rebound, and he plays really good of the pick roll and can move so well for 6'10

@gunsareforkids ahk, i thought he was younger. but i dont think he will be as good as amare. dont get me wrong, i love dwight but i personally dont think he will be. amare is such an underrated defender! actual do you know that amare is averaging more blocks at the moment! and not quite as many steals. i think howard is more intimidating defensive prescence. so honestly i dont think dwights D is that much greater. and i think amares offence kills howards anyday! starting C id pick amare.....

@chuds22 It's not point in blocking shoots. Howard force his opponents to take a bad shoots and he's not letting people in the paint, he force them to take mid and long distance shoots. And you can tell this for Amar'e. Maybe he can have 2 blocks per game but thats it, that's he's only effort on defence -2 blocks per game, 2 saved baskets. But I would also pick Amar'e over Howard any time. Cheerz :)

True Dwight is a way, way stronger defensive force, he makes offenses hesitate and think twice while they will easily take there chances with Amare, but he does get in there and alter shots, just doesn't defensively cover as much as Howard does. Offensively yes, he's more versatile, but as an overall value to a team, Howard.

different positions dwight howard is the most imposing force on the court in the center position, amare (my favorite player) is just incredible one of the best in the nba hands down in the power forward position if not the best and one of the best players overall he is like a perfect mix between garnett (one of the best power forwards in the league since getting to the nba) and dwight howards reckless abandon dunking and FORCE, imagine these two in the same team breaking baskets in every court

I think Id take Amares explosiveness over dwight. yes dwights obviously the better defensive player probably the best in the NBA, but Amares offensive skillset is miles ahead of Dwight howards. And Amare DOES rebound. He averaged 9 rebounds last year

Who is better depends on their role in the team and who they have around them. Amare isn't an anchor, and shouldn't have been played at the 5 spot for the back half of his career. He's clearly an offense orientated PF, and as such needs to have a reb/shot-blocker backing him up in the middle. Dwight on the other hand is a true anchor and probably the best around. In a team with 2 or 3 other go to scorers in which he can contribute primarily with Reb/blks he would be invaluable.

Id rather have Howard on my team. Amar'e is really good but he cannot be THE MAN on a team, he's a player that can help the main star of a team win. No D, no rebounds whatsoever. Defensive presence and rbounding would make Amar'e a lot more important for the team he plays in. New York will not be a good team this year, Amar'e isnt a massive uprgade over David Lee, and Phoenix did win A LOT the second season was named MVP with Ama're out the entire season with knee injury.

dwight is the best defender int he nba currently and he has been for the past 2 year. stoudemire is a great offensive presence tho. its hard but im going to say that dwight plays a more important role to a team then amare.

Wow interesting. They are basically complete opposites. Amare ia an amazing force in the paint, he can also shoot a very good jump . Yet let's face besides a few blocks, he just strugles defensively. Howard has little to no offensive presence. Yet he can rebound and play amazing defense while having the ability to dunk as well. All said Amare always seems to contribute in so many ways, he dunks, he can shoot, he can rebound, and he plays really good of the pick roll and can move so well for 6'10

but otherwise Howard is definitely all down to the defence.
But i have to say if howard manages to ever develop a jump shot its gunna be near impossible to guard him.

they dont even play the same damn position. amare may be listed as a center. but he sure as hell is a forward.
dwight is back to back defensive mvp, amare has no defense.
dwight averages 18.1 points. amare averages 22.2 points. thats a difference of 4 ppg.
whereas dwight's defense is immensely better then amare's.
dwight is easily better. he dominates every stat category other then points.
amare was great with nash. how good is he now?
