The speed and power of a Chinese Mantis is really extraordinary. When they are in their element, and not scared out of their minds by a human, they can take down really impressive prey. I have seen one capture and devour a fully grown male lab mouse. The mantis didn't take a scratch.
The squeezing power of those spiny raptorial forelegs is incredible. I have been grabbed by one whose face had been chewed off by another mantis before it fell on my hand. It felt like I had my finger caught in 2 pairs of needle-nose pliers being wielded by an adult human who didn't like me very much. It is no surprise that the spider popped.
