@BetaWolf47 this particular one uses the cherry blues as far as I know. There is an identical version with the Cherry Browns though (appropriately named 'Silent')
i was thinking of getting this keyboard but i dont think i could give up my macro keys on my G510... but if i did get this keyboard i would get the ultimate where the keys are blank =)
Laser etched keycaps do not wear out. Are you aware that in order to wear out the lettering on the keys you have to actually remove the material from the keycap 1st?
@phototristan the original Tactile Pros did not have laser-etched keys, but the TP3 definitely does (not sure about the TP2, though). So that'll probably be why.
@phototristan "The term laser marking is also used as a generic term covering a broad spectrum of surfacing techniques including printing"
I don't care what anybody tells you so called "laser etched" keys wear off. Look at every single review of the Steelseries 6gv2 they all say it wears out quick but its "laser etched" so what about that?
@Egamer2u They do wear out, it just takes a while. Friction will weather the key.
Especially black keys, as the laser pits must be filled with white paint, rather than using the burned black of the laser, which is possible on white keys.
@xxvi3tboi5o4xx This is in reference to an earlier model that did not use laser etching. All of our current models do use laser etching and will not rub off like this.
I'm pretty sure all those negative comments about the keyboard you no longer recommend are NOT referring to the Das Keyboard Professional, but it really isn't clear at all that this is the case.
definitely go with this keyboard, if this is your first mechanical keyboard. very good keyboard indeed. But if you can find FIlco, go with that. I changed to Filco, and yes, it is just made in better quality, and Filco is louder since it bottoms out more, which I prefer. BUT it does make your hand fatigue faster, the Filco does. And good review phostotristan! I am from geekhack XD
@cafedunhill77 I haven't typed on a Filco with Blues, but I heard that there was not much of a difference between the two; apparently they majority of the parts come from the same manufacturer, the Das is only slightly different.
Again, haven't typed on the Filco.
For the record, unless you're set on getting a tenkeyless, if you're a student in a high school or university or work for a school/university, get the Das, as they offer a scholar discount.
Absolutely love the feel of this keyboard. However, I was dumb and disregarded his comment of the lettering on the keycaps wearing off - they really do!!!
Mine are already showing some fading - nothing major, but it's only been around 20 days. If this bothers you either get the ultimate version and hope you're good enough to touch type and find another keyboard. Me personally, I was on the fence about the ultimate version, but am deciding to go with that instead.
@Gfresh404 There is no way the keyboard should have worn off in less than a month. My suggestion is to take a little tiny bit of alcohol to the keys and see if it doesn't brighten the lettering. What you are seeing is the oils from your fingers darkening the filler in the laser--etched keys.
@DasKeyboardCommunity That is what everyone keeps telling me but I kept my hands uber clean when using that thing. Also - my new keyboard (a Filco Tenykeyless w/ MX Reds) has not shown any fading of the keycaps- which I have had for months. I had my Das for two weeks and the letters on the keycaps were already beginning to darken. So even if it was the oil from my fingers - the keycaps were still pretty shitty.
I'd go with Ultimate. I didn't memorize the whole keys such as printscreen, insert, those sections, but it's obivous that keys gonna wear off at some time. My hands are not sweaty, and I've been using my logitech keyboard for over a year now. Only DF r little bit wear off. It's OKAY, but it does make it look old. If Im going for Elegant keyboard like this one here, its better to go with Ultimate thinking about how long u r gonna use it. I just purchased Ultimate version, Can't wait to type on it
This keyboard, or the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate? They have similar prices, although even though the Razer has backlighting, function keys, and a usb+audio passthrough, the build quality seems dismal, not to mention the ridiculousy shiny exterior. In fact, I owned it for a few days with my old computer before it burnt out!
i am considering this keyboard, but after you comment in the video "letters wear off after 2 months", i have to ask, how sweaty are your hands. sweat is fairly acidic and can wear on things over time. i dont mean any offence, but personally, my hands are very dry. if your keyboard is worn out from your hands' sweat, then it is negligible for me. please get back as soon as you can
@chaosrealm93 Just FYI, we now use laser-etched key caps which are then filled with a whiter filler to ensure longevity. If your hands are oily, the letters will get a bit dirty, but this can be maintained by cleaning with a tiny bit of alcohol. There is no way the letters will wear off after 2 months. This video is in reference to an earlier model that used pad printing.
@chaosrealm93 if you truly can type then lettering shouldn't matter and you can't really type well then i'd suggest the blank keyboard they sell....you be a good typist in a few weeks.
I used this keyboard (the S version, i.e. cherry brown) up @ a friend's house, and fell in love with the experience and feel. I've thus just ordered a Steelseries 7G keyboard (cherry black), and can't wait to replace my comparatively awful Logitech Media 600. Typing, FPS and StarCraft 2 on this keyboard and the 7G is a dream.
I'm either getting one of these WITHOUT letters written on the keys (don't actually need them) or a Razer Black Widow Ultimate... solid mechanical keyboards last forever and are a solid investment!
@gundrag000 haha... i made the best switch from membrane to mechanical. the BEST decision i made in my life. I am using Cherry Blue from Filco Majestouch. I have never tried the DAS but mechanical keyboards are a no brainer!!! i can type very long for more than 6 hours now because i am a writer. Trust me. Get a mechanical keyboard. Now when I go back and type even on the laptop, it feels too hard! Mech keyboards simply take off the stress away from your fingers. Very very very very essential
Phototristan is the man when it comes to keyboards, but I just got my DasKeyboard and it is da bomb! It weighs a ton, is built like a tank, and when you type on it, you know you are doing a thing of substance!
I love it. It is so cool. It puts the fun into typing (I'm a programmer, I live on the keyboard).
BTW Metadot, the builders of DasKeyboard, say they switched to etched keytops a year ago.
@redalf It doesn't use rubber domes, they're mechanical switches with springs inside :) Either alps or cherry key switches. Personally I prefer the "buckling spring" type that you get on the old IBM Model M keyboards, the M13 was a nice keyboard but it's really rare now - I just won a bid for one and had to cancel because paypal screwed up and wouldn't let me verify my card :( However Unicomp will make one for you (minus clit-mouse) with blank black keys!
Hey there, just wanted to ask what you thought of the clicks the Blues make. I'm trying to decide between Browns and Blues, because I'm not too sure how annoying those clicks can get.
@redalf The Cherry Blues are nice and clicky but to me don't compare to the buckling springs of the Model Ms or Unicomp equivalent. The Cherry Browns are nice, but a bit too light of a feel for me (again when compared to the Model M). Model M is still my all time favorite. However, if I had to type when others are around like in a work cubicle situation, I would not hesitate to use a Cherry Brown or probably my favorite quite keyboard, a Realforce Topre.
Well yes it requires 2 usb, however there are 2 usbs on the side (that support USB 2.0 btw). Not to mention you would want it to plug it into the PS2 port to get the full features of the keyboard.
Have you tried the new Matias Tactile Pro 3? I also use a Mac and I use a Filco with the same switches that are in this Das (Cherry MX blues).
But I have been looking at the Unicomp's Customizer 104. I've never typed on a keyboard with buckling springs, so maybe you can give me some insight as to how it compares with the Cherry blue switches?
Thank you.
P.S. In my opinion, the Cherry blues are great, but sometimes I feel that they are too forgiving, as in I don't have to press down so hard.
@shrumpkin I've tried a Filco Cherry Blue keyboard and didn't like it that much. You are correct, that it's a bit lighter in feel. I much prefer a Unicomp or Model M for clicky keyboards.
@RugerMonkey It might not have macros or the blingy-bling of the so-called gaming keyboards, but the only way you can actually justify the $100 price of a mechanical keyboard is to actually experience typing on it. You will be able to tell the difference. Watching videos will obviously not offer you the experience so you will have to try it yourself.
@PeteyBoy10150 I know it's not that bad, but it isn't as GREAT as some say it is. Then again a lot of it is what you like. I have used one before(not for very long though) and I see nothing spectacular about it. It is a nice keyboard though, don't get me wrong. And no I don't like many of the "flashy" or "blingidy bling bling" crap you speak of. But the G19 is not what I meant I made a mistake. I meant the G110. To me I like the G110 over this one, but that's just me. Works great enough for me.
I'm not sure myself as I'm not much of a gamer. Probably the feel makes a big difference, as well at the durability. When you game, you tend to really mash on the keyboard.
@TheGreenSmoke mechanical keyboards tend to have faster controller matrixs (between 20ms and 50ms lag at the controller matrix comapred to membrane and scissor switch keyboards which are 100ms+ lag at the matrix)
they also actuate around halfway rather than all the way (so 2mm compared to 4mm on average)
and some use a ps/2 connection instead of usb, so it doesn't poll the information it just sends it (<0.1 ms compared to 1ms of polling in the fastest usb keyboards)
Many people find the audio and tactile feedback "noise" very very helpful when typing, and may even improve typing speed. The Das Keyboard actually tried to emulate the typewriter-like noise of IBM Model M, which is the best keyboard in existence.
I don't recommend this overpriced keyboard. There are better ones for much less.
It depends on what your use to and how old you are. Back when they built stuff well all the keyboards were like this. I have used them all and the older mechanical types are easy to type on. They last longer too. They might not look as cool but they are built like tanks and perform better.
DAS also makes quite keyboards for the folks that can;t deal with click sounds.
Message at phototristan, is the unicomp keyboard exactly the same as the original model m? i havent heard many people say much, i know it is made on the same machines but how does it actually compare?
It's very close, but not completely the same. The original IBM Model M had a steel plate inside it so it has a bit more of a metallic sound to it and is also heavier. Generally the originals feel sturdier in terms of build quality.
It depends on the model. Unicomp's customizer 101/104 is made to the exact same spec. as the IBM Model M with p/n 42H1292 (this one had the attached cable & drain holes, but was made with an external plastic casing of slightly inferior quality when compared with the venerable Model M p/n 1391401/1390131).
Unicomp does in fact use the steel curved pivot plate assembly for all their buclking spring models. I checked to see if my Endurapro had it, and it did.
I bought one of the blank key models two years ago, and it doesn't have this shiny casing. It is a really great keyboard, but this week I wanted to clean it and what did the manual say: the caps *mustn't* be removed. So their suggested cleaning method is turning the thing upside down and shaking the dirt out + using compressed air.
How were the model M's in this respect? Were they easy to service?
I am happy (mostly) with my Das, but I'm still trying to get my hands on a vintage model M :)
Currently, a USB Y cable is shipped with the keyboard. 2 USBs from that plug into 2 of your computer USBs and the attached keyboard cable plugs into that.
Actually, a closer competitor than the Matias by far would be the Filco Majestouch series boards, as they use the cherry switches that are more like those in the Das. Nice review. I agree with you that the buckling-spring boards are preferable to these though. :)
That's too bad about the cons... It sounded pretty nice. My favorite that I've been using for about 14 years is my NMB / MicronPC rt101+ that came with my Micron system in 1995.
I just ordered a replacement from a vintage OEM dealer (in case this one ever dies), but I will check out the Unicomp Customizer 104 you mentioned. Thanks!
Ps. I would add another con to the list... No "reverse L" enter key. I love those :)
I like that it has a USB hub -- makes it very handy for USB drives & mice. How does the feel of this keyboard's cherry switches feel in comparison with buclking springs?
That was the Logitech MX Revolution I believe. I no longer use it because I had some problems with the middle scroll on it. I use the Logitech G5 weighted mouse now.
I have bought this keyboard (I'm using it now btw) and I think your review is fairly accurate. I was really looking for a keyboard with a nice feel and sound, and I highly recommend this one.
Sorry to hear the letters wear off. I chose the blank keys model and I love it.
oh the keys start to wear off? thats not good haha. DAS has just become avaible to ordre in Taiwan, i'm situated in Hong Kong so i'm planning on ordering one soon haha. i'v'e got a filco keybaord that i type on and i absolutely love it lol.
Dang I wish I could get one of these. lol. My Logitech is nice, but the gold plated contacts (not capacitance switches) inside must be very durable and responsive too. BTW, The loud sound is for the typist's auditoral feedback. For old timers I guess. lol Behold! DAS KEYBOARD!
The das keyboards have a problem with the n-key rollover.
Basically it causes excessive typos because when a series of keys are pressed close to the same time then it assumes the same order everytime. EX. if you press asdf or eh at the same time for any number of times it is always the same, so you get a lot of tehs, ao's (baord), etc.
I returned mine :( Maybe going for ione scorpius or abs m1?
I type a lot. I mean a LOT. Hours and hours of every day. I just got a das keyboard ultimate, and it really is probably the best keyboard I've ever used. I've typed a lot on the apple slim, and although it's a nice keyboard, it's nowhere near the das keyboard. Yes, it looks nice, but the tactile feel doesn't even compare.
I like the apple slim, don't get me wrong, just try a das keyboard.
If the apple slim is the best keyboard you've ever owned, you must not type much, or rate things solely on looks. The noise the thing makes is there on purpose, under each key is a spring switch that will not wear out nearly as fast as the rubber dome style switch on most other modern keyboards.
If you think the DAS is loud, try typing on one of the old IBM model M keyboards. They're bigger, uglier, heavier, and much, much louder.
On a side note, please use some punctuation next time. Please?
yes. the keys wore off withing 2 weeks of heavy use. other thing after constant typing the drone the keys make gets really annoying as well the gloss of the board makes it smudge up really bad the more smudgy it got the yukier it felt. had to spit polish it before sending it back.
What kind of switch does it use? Sounds like Cherry Reds.

Geoxile 1 year ago
@RugerMonkey It might not have macros or the blingy-bling of the so-called gaming keyboards, but the only way you can actually justify the $100 price of a mechanical keyboard is to actually experience typing on it. You will be able to tell the difference. Watching videos will obviously not offer you the experience so you will have to try it yourself.
PeteyBoy10150 1 year ago
@PeteyBoy10150 I know it's not that bad, but it isn't as GREAT as some say it is. Then again a lot of it is what you like. I have used one before(not for very long though) and I see nothing spectacular about it. It is a nice keyboard though, don't get me wrong. And no I don't like many of the "flashy" or "blingidy bling bling" crap you speak of. But the G19 is not what I meant I made a mistake. I meant the G110. To me I like the G110 over this one, but that's just me. Works great enough for me.

are there advantages in gaming that mechanical keyboards offer over regular gaming keyboards from razer and logitech?
TheGreenSmoke 2 years ago
I'm not sure myself as I'm not much of a gamer. Probably the feel makes a big difference, as well at the durability. When you game, you tend to really mash on the keyboard.
phototristan 2 years ago
@TheGreenSmoke mechanical keyboards tend to have faster controller matrixs (between 20ms and 50ms lag at the controller matrix comapred to membrane and scissor switch keyboards which are 100ms+ lag at the matrix)
they also actuate around halfway rather than all the way (so 2mm compared to 4mm on average)
and some use a ps/2 connection instead of usb, so it doesn't poll the information it just sends it (<0.1 ms compared to 1ms of polling in the fastest usb keyboards)

Seriously how can people enjoy this keyboard - it's noisy as hell! I have to support my co-worker who got the brilliant ida to buy this :-(
mcaylus 2 years ago
@mcaylus
There are better ones for much less.
halfallias 2 years ago
@mcaylus

ShepperdW 2 years ago
It's very close, but not completely the same. The original IBM Model M had a steel plate inside it so it has a bit more of a metallic sound to it and is also heavier. Generally the originals feel sturdier in terms of build quality.
phototristan 2 years ago
It depends on the model. Unicomp's customizer 101/104 is made to the exact same spec. as the IBM Model M with p/n 42H1292 (this one had the attached cable & drain holes, but was made with an external plastic casing of slightly inferior quality when compared with the venerable Model M p/n 1391401/1390131).
Unicomp does in fact use the steel curved pivot plate assembly for all their buclking spring models. I checked to see if my Endurapro had it, and it did.

it has a n-key rollover issue too
kohan69 2 years ago
I bought one of the blank key models two years ago, and it doesn't have this shiny casing. It is a really great keyboard, but this week I wanted to clean it and what did the manual say: the caps *mustn't* be removed. So their suggested cleaning method is turning the thing upside down and shaking the dirt out + using compressed air.
How were the model M's in this respect? Were they easy to service?
I am happy (mostly) with my Das, but I'm still trying to get my hands on a vintage model M :)

how do you hook up the 2nd usb port to the keyboard?
xxetfownsxx 2 years ago
Currently, a USB Y cable is shipped with the keyboard. 2 USBs from that plug into 2 of your computer USBs and the attached keyboard cable plugs into that.
phototristan 2 years ago
Actually, a closer competitor than the Matias by far would be the Filco Majestouch series boards, as they use the cherry switches that are more like those in the Das. Nice review. I agree with you that the buckling-spring boards are preferable to these though. :)

100 Euros for a stupid clicking sound which will get boring or won't be heard most of the time? hm.. :// I still don't get it.
YukiLT 2 years ago
I was considering a das keyboard and decided on the customizer. After seeing this review, probably a better choice.
BeaversAreInsane 2 years ago
That's too bad about the cons... It sounded pretty nice. My favorite that I've been using for about 14 years is my NMB / MicronPC rt101+ that came with my Micron system in 1995.
I just ordered a replacement from a vintage OEM dealer (in case this one ever dies), but I will check out the Unicomp Customizer 104 you mentioned. Thanks!
Ps. I would add another con to the list... No "reverse L" enter key. I love those :)
ShermerIllinois 2 years ago
I like that it has a USB hub -- makes it very handy for USB drives & mice. How does the feel of this keyboard's cherry switches feel in comparison with buclking springs?
AIM9XSW 2 years ago
It's lighter than buckling springs and not quite as tactile. To me, nothing beats buckling springs!

Yes, it can be too loud if you share an office with someone or sit right next to them. That's the trade off with this keyboard though.

I'm not familiar with that one.

I have bought this keyboard (I'm using it now btw) and I think your review is fairly accurate. I was really looking for a keyboard with a nice feel and sound, and I highly recommend this one.
Sorry to hear the letters wear off. I chose the blank keys model and I love it.

fosnaugh123 3 years ago
Dang I wish I could get one of these. lol. My Logitech is nice, but the gold plated contacts (not capacitance switches) inside must be very durable and responsive too. BTW, The loud sound is for the typist's auditoral feedback. For old timers I guess. lol Behold! DAS KEYBOARD!
EmoWolf327 3 years ago
The das keyboards have a problem with the n-key rollover.
Basically it causes excessive typos because when a series of keys are pressed close to the same time then it assumes the same order everytime. EX. if you press asdf or eh at the same time for any number of times it is always the same, so you get a lot of tehs, ao's (baord), etc.
I returned mine :( Maybe going for ione scorpius or abs m1?
cheater1092 3 years ago

I type a lot. I mean a LOT. Hours and hours of every day. I just got a das keyboard ultimate, and it really is probably the best keyboard I've ever used. I've typed a lot on the apple slim, and although it's a nice keyboard, it's nowhere near the das keyboard. Yes, it looks nice, but the tactile feel doesn't even compare.
I like the apple slim, don't get me wrong, just try a das keyboard.
Kalapadea 3 years ago
If the apple slim is the best keyboard you've ever owned, you must not type much, or rate things solely on looks. The noise the thing makes is there on purpose, under each key is a spring switch that will not wear out nearly as fast as the rubber dome style switch on most other modern keyboards.
If you think the DAS is loud, try typing on one of the old IBM model M keyboards. They're bigger, uglier, heavier, and much, much louder.
On a side note, please use some punctuation next time. Please?

have you ever used it to make that judgement?
cheater1092 3 years ago 2
yes. the keys wore off withing 2 weeks of heavy use. other thing after constant typing the drone the keys make gets really annoying as well the gloss of the board makes it smudge up really bad the more smudgy it got the yukier it felt. had to spit polish it before sending it back.
AnDaTeSa 3 years ago
Or you can just press on hold F12 :)
