for the most part they do. They can be very quiet though but if you get close you can def. hear it. It sounds like they are chewing something almost.

@OssoEater Yes, Bruxing is a word. It's the noise of Rats grinding their teeth to signify that they are happy. Bruxing is the rat equivalent of a cat's purring :)

hi...it causes the muscle...the muscle they use to grind their teeth is connected with the area around their eyes...they do this when they are feeling good...really cute, I love my ratties doing this :)

Aww, such a cute dumbo rat and his boggly eyes. when mine did it, i was very inexperianced with rats, so i didnt know weather to laugh, or to call a vet. Now i know that when they did that, they were certainly pleased with something. Mine just did it after i gave him a little mini bath, loved the drying part.

The "hiccups" are not a good sign for a rat. You're rat is either in bad health or is developping a Upper Respotry Infection (very common for rats)

You can either bring your rat to the vet or if you feel confident enough, try some home remedies. Try using a few drops of echinacea in her water for about a week, it worked wonders for my boys
