Spain is save! What happened in 2004 was a terrorist attack, stupid! It was like Twin Towers in USA or like the trains in London. Be careful of what you say! Don't be disrespectful to people who died there because of terrorism ¬¬
The accident was caused because the pilots tried to take off with FLAPS RETRACTED and TOWS didn't work. It appears that TOWS didn't work because the ground sensing equipment was faulty.
The reason why the stall happened so soon was because the wing is not designed to lift at high angles of attack. In this case, around 20º. At that angle of attack and speed, the wing stalls in clean configuration.
@flightstar1 - ground effect depends on the wingspan of the aircraft in question. it is caused by the ground interrupting the formation of wingtip vortices and downwash behind the wing and comes into play within one (1) wingspan height above the ground and is MOST pronounced at a height of 1/2 wingspan. Wingtip vortices are notorious producers of drag as is downwash off the back of the wing. Interfering with their formation DECREASES induced drag,...temporarily increasing performance. Fly on!
SAS stands for Special Air Service....an elite group of special operation soldiers from Britain. They've apparently killed the flight crew (and possibly everyone else on board), as there is nobody flying the plane. Crash mystery solved. Spanish transportation authorities can than me later.
is somebody a good counselor?? cuz like right now am really scared of getting on a plane cuz terrorism is just taking over the world....( even though this was not terrorism)
The plane in ground effect will lift off and float within that specific GE area, but once it climbs a few feet above it, the plane will stall and fall down to earth like a brick if the plane has not reached a safe climb speed.
Because of the flaps not being lowered, the plane took off in that ground effect area, but it did not have enough speed for a no flap takeoff. Throw in a hot day, and there you have it.
Ground effect is just 10 feet high after that you have no reaction of grond effect...I fly in real life(gliding) and for my exam i need to know what it is ;)
I read they forgot to lower flaps to take off setting, then after take off they PANICKED and 'forgot' again to lower them when all indications of a stall. Bush Pilots have to do it very often to avoid this stall. All pilots should be trained on how to drop flaps if stalling on climb. Engines were good.
@CFITOMAHAWK2 they couldn't extend the flaps once the stall happened because they suffered a windstrike on ground within nanoseconds. There are some things I don't understand about this accident... such as them being at the very end of the runway and still stallling so dramatically... look at the security video they released. It is all a bit weird, if you have any insights let me know :-)
No, si tus videos so muy buenos.
@anddyx The Spanish authorities didn't have anything to do with the crash. It was pilot error+plus failure of the TOWs alarm system. The plain wasn't properly configured for take off and the alarm system didn't alert the pilots. This type of accident has sadly happened before, in the States and Argentina, etc. By the way, IBERIA for example is one of the airlines with fewer mortal accidents in its jet history, in fact, none since the 60's, so calm down and shut up racist idiot!

@amatorynumber iberia has had a number of fatal crashes, although I agree it is a very safe company. one of the worst was near Bilbao, in northern spain, in 1985.
On February 19, 1985, Iberia Flight 610, a Boeing 727-256 crashed after hitting a television antenna installed on the summit of Monte Oiz while landing in Bilbao, killing 148 people
@amatorynumber Iberia or Air Europa haven´t had any accident in the whole history. Like you have said, the plane wasn´t properly confidured for take off. Flaps and Slats wasn´t enabled.
okay this crash terrible though it was, Spanair and SAS are one alliance. SAS are in control of Spanair, but Spanish authorities did not carry out correct procedures for an aircraft that was Spanair, which in reality was codeshared with SAS. en mi opinio el accidente ocurrio debido a que los flaps del avion no estaban desplegados porque hubo un fallo electrico.
At 3 frames per second, I'm Not surprised it crashed.
