This is what I think: It's not purging your things to make you more free, but to not being so attached to them. Not allowing them to have more space in your head then they should. Taking care of and enjoying possessions is one thing, but they are NEVER more important then your life, You, or the people around you.
I couldn't agree with you more Sarah. I came to the same conclusion on my own a few years ago. You never truly own anything to begin with, they are simply just possessions so don't get to attached because you can't take them into the next realm anyway. I'd rather be with the ones I love and dirt poor than live the lonely shallow existence of someone who thinks they have everything just because they can buy it. You can't buy happiness no matter how wealthy you are.
Wow that got intense really fast. I don't know if I agree with Jack Kerouac's idea of the world. I think that without material goods we might feel more free. Purging makes me feel free, sometimes. He obviously gave them cash too - you heard him saying get this woman more cash. But thing is - (I don't like him usually) on this one he is kind of clear. Them having money means nothing - becuase they WILL get it otherways - more dangerous ways to themselves and others.
@aeidanlea And what have you done for the homeless recently. They seem to enjoy his company and caring words. That can mean more than a lot of money or material wealth.
@meddetect10 I used to hang-out with them but I've been too busy recently. I enjoy talking to them. They're the most down to earth people I have ever met. They see reality in a way higher income individuals don't. It's a good flip once in a while.

I know what it i like to be homeless. My fiance and I lived in Venicebeach,California for about 3 years.I liked what Russell did. There should be more people like him in this country.
its not like russell dont know what hes talking about drugs etc.......i run this corner, wow this oaf should feel really proud of himself y doesnt he get them off the corner and into housing if he is THE man. what a dick head. these ppl are not worth a wank in my eyes. russell brand a complete legend...
@staphinfection Yep, and so what if they've OD'ed tomorrow right?...not your problem...not Russell Brand's either b/c he's on to the next spot while the "oaf social worker" will be helping to bury the bodies.
OMG! Russell Brand is a douche! First, that "big oaf social worker" is an outreach worker, one of the best! Second, yeah giving cash to a crack addict...hmmm probably not a good idea but hey he did yell "don't spend it on drugs" in the woman's face so that clears him of all responsibility. Third....you are trying to discourage drug use but you're preaching Jack Kerouac?? Social workers try to do crazy things like keep people alive, but why bother when some random ass can give them a quick fix!
@DutchessRaven And who is the oaf social worker to decide Brand can't give them a few bucks? They're human beings and one of the reasons they stay addicts is because of such dehumanizing treatment! Russell Brand knows more about drug addiction then either you or that fat oaf will ever know! And he also knows that a few kind words and a little civil treatment can do more to help them than abuse from the system and the fat ass squares that make a living brow beating the less priviliged!
@DutchessRaven That fat oaf your bf or something? They way you're hanging from his dick makes it look that way. Social workers, for the most part, suck off the government teet! They make a living like bottom feeders, from the despair and misery of the less fortunate. And that fat oaf bastard is a perfect example! His racist remark to Brand shows him for the bigot piece of crap that he is!
@DutchessRaven Predjudice and discrimination, are synonomous with racism, assrag! Maybe you should go blow that fat oaf in the video, since you suck his cock on here so much!
@MegaCrazycatt Social worker from a nearby homeless shelter. Doing a great job, since there were so many of them on the street! Russell's right, he was a big oaf! And if Russell wanted to give them all a few bucks and something to eat, that's his business! The fat oaf can take a hike! I guess he gets by on being a fatass tough guy to intimidate the addicts. He didn't like meeting a man he couldn't intimidate! "I'm THE man!" What a joke!
@BigSisterSays This social worker was a jerk; I can't imagine anyone saying they own a corner in America; and then saying "I'm THE man!" ; the homeless people acted with more respect than the social worker ( anyone saying they own a corner in America is the problem - the social worker is the guy how needs a new job). America is the home of the "free". I'm a veteran and I assure you I wasn't defending someone like this social worker; this social worker is a totalitarian (IMO).

I have to query what your motivations for doing good deeds are? I'm going to assume that you are Christian due to you reference to heaven, (please correct me if I'm wrong,) but surely you shouldn't do this kind of deed for recognition in whatever afterlife you choose to believe in. To me it seems slightly hypocritical; how is doing a good deed in front of a camera for media recognition any different to doing it for recognition in the next life?
I understand the message the soc. worker gave, but Russell seemed to make a real connection. Hey, "my corner" this, buddy. I think the other thing is, whatever their (the homeless folks) lives are like, their lives are there own. And if they felt more included, people taking time out, maybe they'd be less likely to be on that fellow's corner. Easily said. My outreach has been limited.
Russell wasn't supporting crack addicts he was giving people money. What they did with it after that exchange took place is their own fucking business.
My father-in-law was walking in Toronto with my 9 and 7 year old nephews. My dad gave a homeless fellow with a dog, that the fellow's sleeping bag was wrapped around, five bucks. My 9 year old nephew did the same...for the dog.
I'd liked to have seen hard man TRY TO correct my father in law about charity in front of his grandsons.
Greg Gerardo put it best, Why should I give a homeless man Money if he is only going to use it for drugs and booze...Wait a minute I was going to use it for drugs and booze. R.I.P.Greg.
If the drugs were controlled ie decriminalised then the government could give hard drug users their fixs for free with the possibility of support when/if they wish to quit. The cost in money would be miniscule compared to the cost of fighting and detaining drug seller/users and the cost in human terms would be far lighter addicts not humiliating themselves whoring and stealing from others
I thought that was amazing. I don't think drug addiction is typically caused by money. I think homelessness is caused by money (not having any). Being a homeless drug addict must feel pretty fucked up. Who is this clown to judge what this woman will do? Russell, taking that step the rest of society won't, may have changed her life. Given her inpiration. Given her hope. Or it could have got her high for a day. No telling, but someone has to take a chance on these people. Social responsibility.
As he said in his book, he knew that money would go to drugs, but he HOPED it didnt. A crack addict will find a way to get it, they'll sell themselves, suck a dick or anything for it. At least this way they kept some dignity
I think Russell Brand's heart was in the right place, but he is enabling these people, so they don't have to try to better their lives. Why work for food when someone will just give it to me? The social worker could have just tried to explain without being a jerk though. If you want to help these people, volunteer and make donations to organizations that are in place to help the homeless. Good luck to all!!!!!
@catmandokitty do you? people are people, treating them as such doesn't mean you have to be a social worker, and being a social worker doesn't mean you have to treat the homeless as beneath a normal conversation. but just to ease your mind, i go to a soup kitchen at least once a month to help.
The Social Worker is Right !! I was listening to the radio here in los angeles...they were interviewing a police officer who's in charge of the skid row area. He said people often come down and dump off clothes and food. He said this is not the right thing to do...we want these people to go to the missions for help. The mission give out clothes and food and have programs to offer real help.
Giving them stuff just enables them to stay on the street and not seek help.
@whiskeyify I agree. The biggest issue about helping someone on a street corner is actually beneficial to the giver not the receiver. You don't solve their problem, you encourage the panhandling because it is easy money. When you go to a mission, they help the homeless AND provide them guidance, education, and rules for receiving help. While Mr Brand's heart is in the right place, it's self-serving rather than life changing. By the way, I live in Denver and that corner is next to a mission.

the social worker may have great intentions, but they still need food to eat and deserve some kind of attention don't they? I remember back home people telling us to give them food instead of money.. he could have just said that without getting all snarky
Matthew 25:40 And the King will make answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Because you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
@frickadele Excellent analysis! It's obvious you are a psychologist. However, I don't want to be the one responsible for giving his name to a bunch of what seems like ill-natured, spiteful, blogger-types. Like I said, he's pretty well-known in the community already, and you can find out for yourself.
@catmandokitty Tell your Dad he acted like an Asshole. He might not be an Asshole but he sure as hell acted like one. He went out of his way to be an asshole to a guy who was doing .... What? Does any really think that Brand spending 10 minutes with homeless people created a last negative impact? He was power tripping and it made him look like a dick.
P.S. My last comment was rhetorical. Read it again it's pretty obvious.
@Pick1980a he works everyday with the homeless helping and making sure they get the help they need. He was not being an asshole. The asshole was russel brande exploting the homeless shamlessly I might add for his own agenda
@catmandokitty Well that's your opinion. Seems to me most people think the opposite. And what agenda is Brand pushing? He made a movie about Jack Kerouac's book! Have you even bothered to read the book or watch the rest of the movie? I doubt it.
Your Dad looked like an asshole, so what everyone's dad is an asshole at some point and who gives a shit what a bunch of people on the internet think.
@catmandokitty Well that's your opinion. Seems to me most people think the opposite. And what agenda is Brand pushing? He made a movie about Jack Kerouacs book! Have you even bothered to read "On the Road Again" or watch the rest of this movie? I doubt it.
Your Dad looked like an asshole, so what everyone's dad is an asshole at some point and who gives a shit what a bunch of people on the internet think. He obviously has not been fired as this film was made several years ago, whats ur deal?
@Pick1980a I'm quite familiar with his work. Mexico city blues is one of my favoriate books. My dad did not look like an asshole. Anyone who woeks with the homeless on a daily basis knows what russel brand did was not productive nor in the best interest of the homeless. Brand throws $20 bills at them and them and says not to do it on drugs when he knows they are going to use it for that. Please try and put yourself in my position. This are not just coments these are people wishing harm
@catmandokitty My Dad runs a Food Bank so I am quite familar with the homeless and giving homless people who are addicted to drugs money actually benefits society if you are pragmatic. They are going to get money for drugs no matter what. That much we can agree on I am sure. The question is where are they going to get the money? The people that come to my Dad's place usually do a B&E or prostitution once the Gov't funds dry up. They are gonna get the money anyway, better no one gets hurt.
@Pick1980a I should point out that I am not advocating giving drug addicts money but when you look at it pragmetically there is no real harm done.
The reality is that these people are addicts and are gonna score wether they got $20 bucks or not. If running out of money was an obstical then there would be no homeless drug addicts. The best you can do for these people is to treat them with some dignity and be there with help when they want it. He didn't give them any dignity in that clip.
@SooperPoopProduction you have nothing against him really? You said "you wished someone would kill him". What a witty rebuttal. You must be very special
@catmandokitty WRONG. I said I "thought it would be funny" if someone "harpooned him with a black flag with the silhouette of a white dick on it". But I would laugh if that happened to anybody, even me. I hope that by now you can realize that I truly have absolutely nothing against your father. Your abusive, alcoholic father. Who eats poopoo and drinks peepee.
@SooperPoopProduction I know you have a small dick and live in your moms basement. Please understand there is help for people with mental disorders such as yourself. Don't worry it's going to be ok your just sick and need help
Russell Brand is pathetic. He is a talentless hack who has stumbled his way into millions of dollars and thinks that by shelling out a few schillings to the peasantry with a T.V. crew watching and an opportunistically timed background song that he'll be seen as some kind of saint, when it is clear as day, that his motivation is nothing more than self congratulatory, and hollow. He's ignorant to criticize a man who lives and works with these people daily, when he's just passing through town.
@MrRyanF As YOU comment on youtube these days. Are you sure your name is Ryan and not Black Pot? Sorry that my comment disrupted your Russell Brand "stroke fest".Here here, carry on. Jolly good then.
@kiplinginny1 Trying to sound smart while commenting on a video of no interest to you..? Sorry, that just doesn't work now, does it...A life...Get one.
I know the social worker personally. That corner you see here? It used to be the Crack Triangle. It's been totally transformed by him, getting some of folks you see in this documentary into housing, treatment programs, jobs, etc. We were out the other day downtown, and he stopped to chat with every homeless person we saw. He knows them all, he reaches out to them, he's a part of their lives, if they let him.
Can't really see Mr. Brand dedicating himself to anything besides promoting himself.
@frickadele He's doing his job. Some people suck at their jobs. Not him. I'm sure with a little research you could find out who he is, if that's your goal.
@frickadele brown nosing him are we in second grade? This guy is my father and I don't think my family would want a unstable wack job like you to know his name for obvious reasons.
If Russell Brand, millionaire, really wanted to help these people, there is a lot more he could do than donate a book and give them $20 which most likely won't even go toward food, water or shelter.
i worked in Denver with some of these people and know the "social worker" personally. He's one of the best people i know. All we see in this three minute segment is whatever Brand wants us to see. i can guarantee you, if the "social worker" got into Brand's face, it was for a good reason. The "social worker" truly is looking out for the best interests of those on the streets, no matter what is depicted in the video.
@jotc82 How can you say tht? social workers do what they do because they went off to school got a job read a book on how and what to do then theres russell a man that knows more about that sort of life than any god dam social worker
If Russell Brand, millionaire, really wanted to help these people, there is a lot more he could do than donate a book and give them $20 which most likely won't even go toward food, water or shelter.
You give a drug addict cash and you're contributing to their addiction... Bottom Line... Walk into any NA meeting in the country and they'll all let you know this... THAT is why the guy was upset... Everyone has to hit their bottom before they decide to make a change but if others are supporting your destructive behaviors, you won't ever hit your low....
@kastnmagic One of the co-founders of second cup was once homeless and he says that giving the homeless money WILL help them hit rock bottom faster and come to their senses if they are ever going to.
If YOU have NO money... you won't be able to get a roof over your head... which means you won't get an address... which means you won't get any money... from the government. And this social worker... who gets money from the government... to pay for the roof over his head and fill his belly... is telling Russell... to NOT help the homeless. YOU PIECE OF DOG SHIT.
@frickadele I guess you have all the answers, huh? Since this video, this "piece of dog shit" has transformed this Crack Triangle and gotten these people into treatment programs, jobs and housing.
Get real. Russell Brand was not helping whatsoever.

@staphinfection Yep, and so what if they've OD'ed tomorrow right?...not your problem...not Russell Brand's either b/c he's on to the next spot while the "oaf social worker" will be helping to bury the bodies.
DutchessRaven 1 year ago
DutchessRaven 1 year ago
@DutchessRaven And who is the oaf social worker to decide Brand can't give them a few bucks? They're human beings and one of the reasons they stay addicts is because of such dehumanizing treatment! Russell Brand knows more about drug addiction then either you or that fat oaf will ever know! And he also knows that a few kind words and a little civil treatment can do more to help them than abuse from the system and the fat ass squares that make a living brow beating the less priviliged!
BigSisterSays 1 year ago
@DutchessRaven That fat oaf your bf or something? They way you're hanging from his dick makes it look that way. Social workers, for the most part, suck off the government teet! They make a living like bottom feeders, from the despair and misery of the less fortunate. And that fat oaf bastard is a perfect example! His racist remark to Brand shows him for the bigot piece of crap that he is!

My outreach has been limited.
barrieev 1 year ago
@barrieev

If the drugs were controlled ie decriminalised then the government could give hard drug users their fixs for free with the possibility of support when/if they wish to quit. The cost in money would be miniscule compared to the cost of fighting and detaining drug seller/users and the cost in human terms would be far lighter addicts not humiliating themselves whoring and stealing from others
moreaxe 1 year ago
I thought that was amazing. I don't think drug addiction is typically caused by money. I think homelessness is caused by money (not having any). Being a homeless drug addict must feel pretty fucked up. Who is this clown to judge what this woman will do? Russell, taking that step the rest of society won't, may have changed her life. Given her inpiration. Given her hope. Or it could have got her high for a day. No telling, but someone has to take a chance on these people. Social responsibility.

@catmandokitty do you? people are people, treating them as such doesn't mean you have to be a social worker, and being a social worker doesn't mean you have to treat the homeless as beneath a normal conversation. but just to ease your mind, i go to a soup kitchen at least once a month to help.
averagesketch 1 year ago
The Social Worker is Right !! I was listening to the radio here in los angeles...they were interviewing a police officer who's in charge of the skid row area. He said people often come down and dump off clothes and food. He said this is not the right thing to do...we want these people to go to the missions for help. The mission give out clothes and food and have programs to offer real help.
Giving them stuff just enables them to stay on the street and not seek help.
whiskeyify 1 year ago
@whiskeyify I agree. The biggest issue about helping someone on a street corner is actually beneficial to the giver not the receiver. You don't solve their problem, you encourage the panhandling because it is easy money. When you go to a mission, they help the homeless AND provide them guidance, education, and rules for receiving help. While Mr Brand's heart is in the right place, it's self-serving rather than life changing. By the way, I live in Denver and that corner is next to a mission.

This are not just coments these are people wishing harm
catmandokitty 1 year ago
@catmandokitty My Dad runs a Food Bank so I am quite familar with the homeless and giving homless people who are addicted to drugs money actually benefits society if you are pragmatic. They are going to get money for drugs no matter what. That much we can agree on I am sure. The question is where are they going to get the money? The people that come to my Dad's place usually do a B&E or prostitution once the Gov't funds dry up. They are gonna get the money anyway, better no one gets hurt.
Pick1980a 1 year ago 15
@Pick1980a I should point out that I am not advocating giving drug addicts money but when you look at it pragmetically there is no real harm done.
The reality is that these people are addicts and are gonna score wether they got $20 bucks or not. If running out of money was an obstical then there would be no homeless drug addicts. The best you can do for these people is to treat them with some dignity and be there with help when they want it. He didn't give them any dignity in that clip.
