if you want to be cool you can call this metal but drop d is actually death style now and drop db is metal..along with drop c... (static x, soad) but if you're really epic...you can play metal in standard...that way you're not bar chording everything on stage. you can learn some epic riffs in drop d and conver them to standard and that is what seperates the men from the boys :) (metallica)

this is all my opinion by the way so flame if you want but it's mostly true...

@uberd0rk1337 id stray away from chording up in drop d...and try alternating the open lowest D with scaled notes on your next string (a)..the alternation is where the metal really comes out..in my opinion...obviously throw in some chords...

When I use drop D I don't slide, I use my fingers as traditionally as possible. As useful as drop D is, it gets with some bands because all they do is play power chords.

AND he didnt show you how. anyways for anyone looking to do it by ear, press down on the 7th fret of the low E string and pluck that and the open A string above it. they should sound the same. and you can check using a tuner if you have one afterwards to make minor adjustments if you need to.

pretty much. drop d is also known as "lazy fucker" tuning. you can play a bad-ass riff using 1 finger... a lot of beginner guitarists actually learn to play this way. it's cool 'cause you can play along w/ some CDs and it helps inspire you to keep learning the instrument.
